This is what brought tears to my eyes today morning…

I had been hearing the name of Narayanan Krishnan for the last few days but travel and work prevented me from finding out more…This morning, I finally read his story…and could not stop my tears… Many of you may have already read/heard his story…Those of you who have not, please read brief excerpts below. Krishnan’s story starts in 2002...At age 20, he was young, award-winning chef with a five-star hotel group, short-listed for an elite job in Switzerland. But a quick family visit home before heading to Europe changed everything.

“I saw a very old man eating his own human waste for food,” Krishnan said. “It really hurt me so much. I was literally shocked for a second. After that, I started feeding that man and decided this is what I should do the rest of my lifetime.

As he was to write later, this was a defining moment for him:

As the old man ate the food given to him, he held Krishnan’s hand, giving the very real sensation of a powerful energy. This triggered an experience of inner happiness and fulfillment Krishnan had never felt before.

Today,

He seeks out the homeless under bridges and in the nooks and crannies between the city’s temples. The hot meals he delivers are simple, tasty vegetarian fare he personally prepares, packs and often hand-feeds to nearly 400 clients each day.

“Now I am feeling so comfortable and so happy,” he says. “I have a passion, I enjoy my work. I want to live with my people.”

In 2003, still barely 22, he set up the nonprofit Akshaya Trust…Now 29,

..he has served more than 1.2 million meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner — to India’s homeless and destitute, mostly elderly people abandoned by their families and often abused.

…Krishnan’s day begins at 4 a.m. He and his team cover nearly 125 miles in a donated van, routinely working in temperatures topping 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

He seeks out the homeless under bridges and in the nooks and crannies between the city’s temples. The hot meals he delivers are simple, tasty vegetarian fare he personally prepares, packs and often hand-feeds to nearly 400 clients each day.

Krishnan carries a comb, scissors and razor and is trained in eight haircut styles that, along with a fresh shave, provide extra dignity to those he serves.

He says many of the homeless seldom know their names or origins, and none has the capacity to beg, ask for help or offer thanks. They may be paranoid and hostile because of their conditions, but Krishnan says this only steadies his resolve to offer help…

The group’s operations cost about $327 a day, but sponsored donations only cover 22 days a month. Krishnan subsidizes the shortfall with $88 he receives in monthly rent from a home his grandfather gave him.

Krishnan sleeps in Akshaya’s modest kitchen with his few co-workers. Since investing his entire savings of $2,500 in 2002, he has taken no salary and subsists with the help of his once-unsupportive parents.

“They had a lot of pain because they had spent a lot on my education,” he said. “I asked my mother, ‘Please come with me, see what I am doing.’ After coming back home, my mother said, ‘You feed all those people, the rest of the lifetime I am there, I will feed you.’ I’m living for Akshaya. My parents are taking care of me.”

Please take a moment today to forward this story to your family, friends and acquaintances. Please consider donating any amount that you can…and please please don’t forget to vote for him in the CNN Heroes poll.

Krishnan’s story made me feel very small todayand strengthened my resolve to fight for a country and society where no woman, no girl, no child and no man goes hungry…and is ensured a life of dignity.

I am truly humbled by the work of this great man…and deeply embarrassed and ashamed that it took me so many years to find out about him. Please do share and spread the word.

very good endeavour by this young man in Madurai, really heart filling to see so many youngsters coming out to help the needy. Again i would request there a few more deserving people who need your support in spreading the word. 1. Shri.Ramakrishnan & Shri.S.Sankararaman of Amar Seva Sangam -Ayikudy link https:\\www.amarseva.org 2. Shri.Sridhar of Maithri Educational Trust, Chennai – http://maithritrust.org/. These specially abled people are doing a great service to the downtrodden lot, without any publicity. Its not easy for any person with limited mobility to run organisations to help people. This is the bhavishya of our Bharath. We operate our own self help groups without going to the media for coverage. ..Jai Hind…Vande Mataram

Some of the people I know are contributing to the Akshaya trust. The real question is where is our humanity when homeless are struggling for food? Perhaps people have gone too far without care.
The touching part is the support of his parents in this venture.
Keep up the visibility to such endeavors.

Shantanu, thanks for posting this great work by Narayan Krishnan. I have posted this in many blogs. May be this is the start of a great movement in India. Hope many in other states will follow. Yes , 10, I agree with you , you must appreciate his parents.

The rich in India try to follow the wrong aspects of West. Even though , Mukesh Ambani has the right to build ” Antilla” , he should realise the numerous “Ant hills” which are glaring in Mumbai. Ant hills , here I mean slums and the poor destitutes living in the ” ant hills” in around Mumbai. There are many more examples, but this is one.

This Narayan Krishnan effect should become a movement all over India.

  12. It brought tears in my eyes too.

Same is true for this video too. Everytime I watch this tears make their way out.

    *** COMMENT EDITED ***

One of my friends forwarded a cautionary e-mail about Akshaya Trust and N.Krishnan. Much of the original author’s email is anecdotal, so I could not verify it. I am posting this in the hope that the blog readers can help bring out the truth.

    Hi,
I would like all of you to know the truth about Akshya Trust and CNN 2010 Hero’s nominee N.Krishnan. I began actively volunteering for this organization after reading the CNN Hero’s report in April 2010. I was instrumental in fund raising in the bay area and helped them get a lot of support. But now I really regret it. I have also contributed substantially to this organization. Over time I realized there were a lot inconsistencies and false information:
    1) I was told that I am sponsoring the 5th block for the shelter. On the most recent interview in Jaya TV Krishnan mentioned that only 4 blocks have been sponsored. This is a blatant lie. Even before the interview he had received full funding from me for the 5th block. I can prove it with my emails and receipts. What is the need to lie. I did not get a proper answer when I asked Krishnan.

    4) Certain donations that are sent to Akshaya are not shown in the books. I was not given the receipt for one such donation on the same reason.

    5) I have contributed substantially to this organization and till today I have not got a single receipt from a third party vendor as to how they are spending the money.

    *** NOTE by MODERATOR ***

    Pl avoid sweeping statements.

  15. B Shantanu says:

@Ravi: I personally spoke to N Krishnan and it is hard for me to believe the statements made in the anecdotal email.
Nevertheless, I am letting this comment stay for now…If any readers have any first-hand experience, positive or otherwise, kindly share here.
    Thanks

  16. Vidhya says:

I believe this is a noble endeavor, and it would be wonderful if more Krishnan’s sprout up. For every organization, for every good deed, there is always some fault that can be found. What is more important is the intent, from the website, the work done, I find the intent noble. This man has given up his glamorous high paying job, living in a small house, feeding so many people who need it. Many of us are not ready to part even with a 100 Rs from our pockets even once in a while. So it doesnt matter if he talked of 4 blocks or 5 blocks. I think if I gave up my job, went around feeding homeless people, bathing them, not thinking of the social stigma, and also lived a life of sacrifice, then perhaps I can comment on such things whether it is suspicious etc. But if I did that I wouldnt have time to think of such things, would I? Or else whoever is finding something wrong can take over the same role, and do it better.

  17. B Shantanu says:

@Vidhya: …whoever is finding something wrong can take over the same role, and do it better.. Very well said…Thanks.

    Comments on Ravi’s remarks.

No big support was received in Bay area with the help of this individual.
This person lacks honesty in not recording receipt of the refund of entire donation made.
Sweeping unsubstantiated statements indicates lack of maturity.
Akshaya maintains proper records of receipts and expenditure
Better sense should prevail on such individuals.

    All
I am the Director of Akshaya USA. Akshaya USA was founded to support the mission and vision of Krishnan. Last night out of 40 countries nominated India won an award based on Krishnans work in Madurai in front of a packed stadium of 12,000 people. If any of you have concerns or questions about our organization or the work that Krishnan is doing please email me and I will provide you with all facts and figures. Last month our Director of communications Ed DiTomas visited India. He has written two books Helping the Helpless and Akshaya Today. We received over whelming support from the communities in Tampa, Washington, Orlando, New Jersey, Delware, Dallas and we are expecting completion of the Akshaya home in mid 2012. It is hard to do what Krishnan does even for a day – so please work with us in supporting and standing by this young man who has spent 10 years of his life in service to mankind.
