What’s more important than the death of 17 armymen?

This is…

Hindu Kashmir Avalanche

and this…

Rediff Kashmir Avalanche

and this…

Times of India Kashmir Avalanche

and this…

IBN Kashmir Avalanche

I don’t think any comment is necessary.

I would simply like to reproduce two tweets from Kanchan Gupta and Atanu Dey respectively:

KanchanGupta: Folks it’s amazing, the manner in which the avalanche story is being downplayed to promote SRK interview! Sad. Very sad.

AtanuDey: My heart goes out to those soldiers and their families. They died to protect a callous Bollywood/Cricket crazed public.

P.S. The sites/publications that redeemed themselves: Indian Express, Pioneer and Hindustan Times

  1. Valentine’s Day is more important. Celebrity skin is more important. Fashion trends are more important. Hemlines are more important.

What else do you expect from a nation that abandons its own languages like a prostitute loses her inhibitions?

  2. 2bornot2b says:

Apalling… The nation that does not respect its soldiers will lose protection very soon or is it just the English media for whom Australia cutting down on visa approvals is more important than no flag hoisting on Republic day in J&K.

I think joining National Cadet Corps in schools must be made cumpulsory for all students.. During my school days it was only 4 days per week and for 2 years (only during school days). Or Scouting should be made cumpulsory. These are the places children will learn singing National Anthem and respecting the national flag and of course, by going for camps all over the country, students would get a feeling of what our country is all about.

    Our Brave Soldiers

I salute our Brave Soldiers – who lay their life gladly, saving Motherland’s Honour,
What a shame – supreme sacrifice is reported in just numbers in TV & Newspaper.

What a Pity – Crime is saving Honour of Motherland and Retaliation in Self-defense,
Just actions, call of duty of our brave soldiers – are termed by Enemy Agents as Offense.

Sneeze of Anti-Nationals, Politicians – reported in lucid details – Ad-nauseam,
Supreme sacrifice of our Soldiers – an insignificant trivia – Media prefers to shun.

What a pity – highly trained brave soldiers, wasting life and wasting Taxpayers’ Money,
Guarding Crooks and Scoundrels to earn two loaves of bread – instead of fighting Enemy.

  4. And on top of that the Left-lib media does a lot of politics even in these times. Barkha Dutt thought about comparing a natural disaster and an Islamic terrorist attack, asking which one is more dangerous!!!

    Barkha Dutt’s tweet,

“Spare a though. Avalanches and climate as deadly as bombs and terrorists”

What is being done here is to trivialize the importance of a national issue in India like Islamic terrorism. Nobody is to blame for a natural disaster, (in most cases) but Islamic terrorism is religion driven. Comparing the two is shifting the blame of the latter on to nobody, and preparing ground for accepting it just as we accept a natural disaster.

We should confront them every time they make such horrible comparisons. When I did, she told me not to take it too literally.

Perhaps we should remember that! Never take Barkha Dutt literally! She is always joking!

Nice post (expose!). It is such a pain to see this. The histrionics of Rahul Gandhi and Shahrukh Khan are more important. I feel a noose around the people of this country, which is slowly but surely tightening. Hurts a lot. I wonder what we can do :(. Nothing’s made me feel this despondent in a while.

God save our country! Vande mataram!

  6. I do not expect anything from this hapless media.
Where there are the idiots like Rajdeep Sardesai, Nikhil Vagalekar, Barkha Datt are busy appeasing congress and anti-nationals what else can be expected.

    @Karthik.
    “God save our country! “
No god won’t save us. As he has already given all that is necessary to live a life. We have forgotten our Dharma, so we are the one to fix this. This is our job and we should be doing this.
Its true that immediately we can not do anything to bring the change but the fire within and urge to do something needs to live till we do something (strategically planned).

I’m not sure that the media is entirely at fault here. For a large part the ratings are driven by what people want. A significant majority of the population would love to be in a “wonderland” reading/watching information on bollywood/cricket/politics …
Just because 10 of us on the internet feel that soldiers are more important is not going to change ground realities.
How many of us have supported army causes? Donated to the organizations helping out the families of army folks regularly?
Questioned our politicians and bureaucrats for not providing adequate infrastructure?
While the media should be blamed for incompetence, nailing it to a cross is akin to killing the messenger.

  10. Dirt Digger says:

Wonder if our Govt. would do anything to help the families of the deceased?

    @Shantanu

Better late than never! They have covered it on ibn in four parts, and worth watching, above is the link. Very sad news, lets pray for the departed souls.

  13. Priti says:

Its not only sad about what the media is doing but also what we as common public is giving importance to. I mean I know people who are supporting SRK because he is a successful bollywood actor. I really feel what he is doing is only to get publicity for his upcoming movie. And the sad part is many people as well as celebrities are supporting him. I am not saying he is not entitled to an opinion (everyone is..) but please do not put your opinions forward to the public just because you can (as a successful actor), keep your opinion to yourself. The country has more issues to handle than a bollywood actor creating a rift amongst people by blurting out his opinions in public. Hope things change for the positive…

Our news media is corrupt to the core, Sandeep how about a section called DDM Watch(Desi dork media)?

  15. @Malvika,
“a section called DDM Watch(Desi dork media)?”
Do you mean to have a section on this blog/new website? Frankly, I’m not much aware of the DDM. Is it going to be a watch for the media matters or will be publishing matters like Shantanu post as and when he come across?
If you have any plans lets talk offline over email.
Just leave a message on “Why Am I writing?” page on my blog.

This country is not worth getting killed for. Media dishes out what public wants. If public gave greater priority to the soldirs death the media dare not ignore soldiers. In this nation besides the other downtrodden the soldires are the most exploited lot.

  17. Rajish says:

Its not the fault of media.. they just need bread and butter.. Its we the people who are to be blamed as we don’t pay attention to these kinds of news.. We always want to hear and look good and attractive things, not any death or fire unless it happens to our neighborhood .. Tell me how many of you guys search youtube for movie songs and funny videos..? – All most all.. there we are..
First we have to change later media will realize and will change as media knows what the public looks for and their choice and likings..

    Dhananjay: Great post….

Sadly, as you have pointed out, not many “people go to the source to find the truth”.

  20. Shantanu,

I do not see much prominence for news like these also.

An extract from Indian Express dated 15th Feb, 2010:

Two more residents of the Asha Kiran home for the mentally challenged people were declared dead at the Sanjay Gandhi hospital on Sunday.

One of them, Chanda (38) had been admitted to the hospital a fortnight ago. The other, Nishant (11), was bought to the hospital on Saturday.

The cause of death is unclear so far and the hospital will submit a postmortem report to the police.

With the fresh deaths, the total number of inmates from Asha Kiran who have lost their lives since December, touches 25. The home has reported 128 deaths in the last four years.

The complex, built for 350 people, now houses 730.
