Quote of the Week

Courtesy Sh. Raj Thackeray, Maharashtra Navanirman Sena:

Why can’t people accept Mumbai if they can accept Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai?

If any producer dares to rename this city and refer to it as Bombay, then my men will protest in typical MNS style..

  1. Does he realize that if the “typical MNS style” involves violence, he’s breaking the law of the nation?

  2. Jiggs says:

He quoted Baroda being called Vadodara now, but he forgets that Gujarati’ still call the city Baroda, even Modi uses Baroda in his speech sometimes.

I think this is going a bit to far now. If someone prefers to call it Bombay, so be it, why should anybody object to it? The city has been officially renamed and what more is expected by Shri. Raj Thackeray.

I find all his allegations very amusing:

    1. He says that usage of Marathi language is down to 65%: Well, as Kumar Ketkar had pointed out, that Maharashtrians are themselves putting their wards into English medium schools to keep in sync with the changing times, obviously the percentage would go down. So who has to be blamed for this?

    2. Last year during the University admissions in Pune, Shri. Raj Thackeray charged that “Outsiders come and BRIBE and get admissions as against the locals” : But, he failed to explain that who are these people who accept BRIBES? Who are these employees of the University, have they been identified? If yes what action does he plan to take against them?

    3. The first right for locals where low level jobs are concerned is right, I agree with him on that one. But, are Maharashtrians agreeable to such low level jobs? Has he bothered to check that? I know it that Maharashtrian youth today wants only GOVERNMENT JOBS, The state is already saddled by a huge surplus of Government employees which itself it becoming a liability. What are his plans to tackle this? MPSC exams are laced with corruption and once a youth gets a job he/she has to recover the monies paid for securing such jobs, how would they do it?

Personally, I feel that Shri. Raj Thackeray has veered away from his main agenda and now is simply not making any sense. This issue over Karan Johar’s film is simply unbelievable.

He is also silent about the sprawling slums in Mumbai and Pune, does he mean that all slum dwellers are Non Maharashtrians?

  3. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

If somebody writes Trivandrum instead of Thiruvananthapuram nobody objects. Write Trivandrum and the letter reaches the place and person without invoking any protest. Of course, Kerala is a state known for its hartals, but we have no such stupids here who are bothered about somebody saying or writing Trivandrum instead of Thiruvananthapuram. And it would be still difficult for a north Indian to correctly pronouce Thiruvananthapuram and suppose some junkhead like MNS insist, even God cannot help !!! It is time these kinds of jokers are shown their proper place.

  4. Dirt Digger says:

The question that needs to be asked is why is Raj Thackeray given so much importance? Who benefits from his insane rants?
The answer is quite simple, its the Congress. Raj is nothing but a pawn of the Congress to split the opposition by taking away Shiv Sena’s vote bank the common Marathi person.
The media makes hay out of his sound bites without analyzing the strategy behind.

@ Rohit, you missed the quote by Bal thackerey.

What about Bal Thackerey called Raj “Jinnah” of today and MNS same as Muslim league of the past.

Congress was benefited in Maharashtra because of MNS, and congress deliberately kept quite for few days when there was North Indian and Maharashtra issue to take advantage of the situation in coming election. Congress is politically shrewd.

  9. Salil says:

Russia in English is “Roos” in Hindi/Marathi
China in English is “Cheen” in Hindi/Marathi
“Deutshland” in German is Germany in English

Similarly, Mumbai in Marathi is Bambai in Hindi and Bombay in English. Hope the Thackerays can see through this logic.

Raj Thackrey is great person, a great Maratha Leader, in lines of Chhatrapati Shivaji, which India should be proud of.

Raj Thackrey is great person, a great Maratha Leader, in lines of Chhatrapati Shivaji

I dont even think the real Shivaji would have kept this Raj Thackrey as his gardener..

  13. संदीप नारायण शेळके. says:

    @Rohit
I agree that Maharashtrians do not have a true leader to fight against odds for marathi manus.
But in over enthusiasm you are degrading the image of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj byt matching them (I can not use him because I feel its not right for me to call a yug-purush like Ch. Shivaji Maharaj singularly) with Raj Thakarey.
Raj Thakarey is nowhere even near to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and if you are a maharashtrian you shouldn’t be doing this insult.
Yes Raj Thakarey is doing right things but by wrong means. He (or his Shiledars) shouldn’t have vandalized assembly, he should have respected the dignity.
He beat up the students came here for exams which is not at all correct. (If you support this then you shouldn’t be condemning attacks on Bharatiya Vidyarthies in Austrelia)

More or less. Please Do not compare him with Shivaji Raje.
    I request you.

    Dhanyawad.

  14. Arjun says:

didn’t Raj Thakarey go awol during the 26/11 period ? All these people live off Shivajis rep but in reality they wouldn’t even have the guts to walk down the street on their own if a couple of muslim guys were innocently coming walking in the opposite direction..If the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was around now he would have easily taken all of India over without a fight and taken all of Kashmir back as well and given china a bloody nose..These present day leaders being compared with Hindu warriors of the past is not only a joke but an insult..

  15. महेश पाटील says:

Its interesting to note that if you closely observe All the people from other countries, if you see their interviews or any clip on TV or meet in person these foreigners call Mumbai as Mumbai..n not BOMBAY… but some ‘Hip/page 3’ crowd or some nri still cant let go of the word BOMBAY…
    WAKE UP SID..!

I hate these celebs and page 3 people when they address Mumbai as Bombay.. maybe they should learn from the westerners..and get the Mumbai word in their mouth.

  16. Salil says:

    @महेश पाटील:

Why should anyone be forced to use a particular word? It is just a way to refer to a city. You dont see the Americans or Chinese getting militant about Indians calling their country “Amreeka” or “Cheen”, do you?

  17. महेश पाटील says:

I am Objecting about indian people who are still not willing to twist their togues yet to call Mumbai as Mumbai.

And its America’s and Chinese people look out .. if they dont mind we calling them Amreeka cheen. And we should draw parallel from countries where they use their national flags for their bikinis and underwears.

I am sure you would mind if u are called dalil instead of salil.

  18. Salil says:

I am Objecting about indian people who are still not willing to twist their togues yet to call Mumbai as Mumbai.

Why should one twist their tongues to say Mumbai? Rather, why should anyone be forced to refer to a city by a name they don’t want to?

And its America’s and Chinese people look out .. if they dont mind we calling them Amreeka cheen.

So why do you have a problem if outsiders call the city as Bombay? (I’m using the same “Westerners do, so should we” logic which you brought up)

“And we should draw parallel from countries where they use their national flags for their bikinis and underwears.”

I didnt get you. Are you saying we should our national flag for underwear? What parallel should we draw?

I am sure you would mind if u are called dalil instead of salil.

I would not mind, but I would respond to only my name. A city is not human that it would respond to any name.
