I do feel disturbed that SRK felt the need to make such a statement…

And how many public figures can you think of who can say the same thing about Hinduism? Baba Ramdev? Sri Sri Ravi Shankar? Mata Anandamayee?

Shahrukh Khan in ‘Islamic’ trouble: Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

    http://hindufocus.wordpress.com/2009/06/19/shahrukh-khan-in-islamic-trouble/

The BADSHAH of Bollywood is in trouble for blasphemy. He has been accused to have listed Prophet Mohammed as one of the most unimpressive personalities in history. Moreover he has bracketed the Prophet along with Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill. If the case is proved, Khan could go to jail for three years, according to police source.

Just the other day Newsweek magazine named him one of the 50 most powerful people in the world.

The celluloid BAAZIGAAR, indulged by his success in SWADES and PARDES, became so DEEWANA, that CHALTE CHALTE, without any DARR, he made some comments on Islam and the Prophet.

RAM JANE, why he did so! It may remain a PAHELI forever.

Perhaps he overestimated his filmy JOSH and SHAKTI: THE POWER and thus got carried away. “MAIN HOON NA”, he must have thought. The poor guy did not even think of the ANJAAM – forgot the likes of Rushdie and Tasleema.

Now some people have got offended.

He is trying hard to clarify to his religious SAATHIYA that HUM TUMHARE HAIN SANAM. He claimed that his comments to a magazine were misinterpreted due to a “writing error” and that he had named the Prophet among the most impressive personalities in history.

“YES BOSS, main IDIOT hoon! Mera DIL TO PAGAL HAIN! Mere batein DIL SE maat lena!”

What else can he do? Better to behave like a PAGLA, when ZAMANA DEEWANA hai.

Who wants to be a DUSHMAN DUNIYA KA, specially of the Islamic duniya?

When you cross Islam even the DON has to worry whether KAL HO NA HO.

    No more CHAMATKAR.

No more ONE TWO KA FOUR.

From now onwards, RAJU BAN GAYA GENTLEMAN.

The comments “…being a Muslim and standing up for the tenets of Islam is my most important agenda.” attributed to SRK uttered in the manner of a “good” Muslim: it is hard to believe he got carried away. On his marriage to a hindu wife, he seemed to have gone through a process of mental torture where he had not thought of himself as any different from a Hindu. He did not originate from a film industry family and his behaviour otherwise has been refreshing. He wife still bears her Hindu name and his son is named Aryan which is certainly progressive? As far as I can see, religion has not been a determining factor for him until that boast quoted above. I might be inclined to say that it is just as well SRK has ruled himself out of politics because of his latest utterences: but Indian Muslims need to be able to deal with the sort of frank exchanges about their religion. After his utterences on the prophet, I am inclined to believe the SRK is a mature personality who recognises faults where he finds them. I am afraid that any law that takes SRK to task is rendering no service to country. Indian Muslims cotton woolled into the Indian sort of protection will respond as terrorists abroad. We have already seen evidence of this already. I am afraid that Hindus in the UK have already imitated the Muslim like intolerance at the smallest of slights to our religion. Our self assurance should be based on our glorious history. Our belief in God need to be made of sterner stuff which should melt the hearts of our adverseries failing which we should display equinamity that should not delight them further by any expression of anguish and pain. It would be a good policy for Hindus to support SRK on his right to freedom of expression which we also want for ourselves.

SRK is covered in a tehelka article. Please see the link below:

I have a rather low opinion of the ethics of the Bolly Wood but the coverage paints a positive image of his life. He started out as a very angry man but one has to admire his wish to do good by building a free hospital with his own money. It looks like Hindus have played a part in his upbringing and perhaps this has led him to be a moderate as far as Islam is concerned. Islam being what it is, he can hardly disown it, unless the Hindus of India want to assume the guardianship of Muslim converts to Hinduism.

On the other track, I was taken aback to discover that AR Rahman is a Hindu convert to Islam who sees himself as an ambassador for Islam (instead of Hinduism) for India. Looking at the positive side of it, these two characters are probably some of the best Muslims India has to offer. Dr Kalam has shown that there are Muslims in India who are a force for good and it is foolish to unnecesarily alienate them. On the other hand, as the elections have shown, the Muslims of India do not have to be alienated to align in a block against a Hindu party. It should however not be our policy to make it a self-filling prophecy either. Varun Gandhi’s comments as far as I can see in the context of our discussions have been blown out of all proportions. I am quite clear going forward that he is going to be the most important person that I would like to have aboard.

@ Arindam: Thanks…nice play on words…although reading through the report, I do think that SRK’s comment has been completely mis-understood.

    ***

@ Khandu: I am all for freedom of expression…and I fully support SRK’s right to say what he feels (including the quote I have cited).

That does not mean I agree with everything he says… E.g. pl. read this post SRK: “Jihad…a small little word”

and I agree one hundred percent that “there are Muslims in India who are a force for good and it is foolish to unnecesarily alienate them.”

Indeed I think the vast majority fall in this category.

@ Anrosh: Short answer is “No”. Long answer: Whether we like it or not, SRK is a role model and in a sense an “influencer”…What he says cannot be easily dismissed…but then this is my personal opinion.

What do you feel about the points I raised in comment #2?

  9. B Shantanu says:

    Courtesy Sandeep:

What did Shahrukh actually say? Here, in his own words, from Time and Style:

[Interviewer] The most impressive figure in history, according to you?
There are lots of them, some negative ones like Hitler. On the other hand there are nice ones like Napoleon, Winston Churchill and if I can call it history, then Prophet Mohammed and from recent times – Nelson Mandela. And also Gandhiji and Mother Teresa who are equally impressive.

That was enough to get the Islam-in-Danger bogey all worked up. You need to assign opposite meanings to the words Shahrukh Khan has used to take offence. If anything, he has spoken with polite deference to Mohammad. And this as an extremely passing statement in the entire interview in a magazine catering to the severely dumbed-down. But the Islam-in-Danger brigade’s threat worked. As always.

In answer to #2, why did SRK have the need to say “being a Muslim and standing up for the tenets of Islam is my most important agenda”? This statement of his beliefs should hardly come as a surprise from a beleiver in this proselytizing religion. It would be worrying if this means that he intends to use his considerable influence to hard sell Islam to Hindus. As a marketing graduate, he surely recognises that it would solidify the loyalty of his Muslim followers who see in him a Muslim icon. Hindus have long bought the belief that all religions are one so they are hardly likely to have a good look at what all the jostling for positions of influence in religions is going to mean for them.

SRK’s mission might have got something to do with a letter written to him by AR Rahman which sought to enlist him as an ambassador for Muslims. Some of you may know that AR Rahman is a Hindu convert to Islam and has gone on record as saying that he is not in the conversion business:

    http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~kailasan/interviews/fundamentalist.htm.

It is quite evident that these two acceptible faces of Islam are not shy of using their positions to advance their own religion. If Hinduism was powerful and able to blow away all contenders, would it not rejoice in an opportunity to defeat these pretenders at their own game? That is the challenge before Hindus. The answer has to lie in building our strenghts around the Bhagavid Gita and a society fully informed in the sciences and the arts of politics. When Japan confronted the world after America’s threats to open it up to trade, it responded by sending its brightest to study what made the West powerful. It did not stop at the sciences but learned all about their philosophy, law, politics, economics and their military doctrine. I have heard them pouring over Kant. English in their case was not even their own native language. They did not however sacrifice the integrity of their society and will not do so to this day.

In contrast, in the half century since our independence, we have neither managed to adapt Western practices to our best advantage, nor have we mended our failing Hindu institutions and practices. Our politics is such utter shambles that no tears should be shed if absolute power had to be imposed to cure our people of their stupour and ignorance.

As far as what SRK said and what is being written as what was allegedly said will remain in controversey is going to matter even less to the promotors of Islam than the opportunity it provides them. The law should not help them by stoking the controversy. It should keep out of it.

Of course if some Hindu artist would advocate Hinduism, his bollywood career would be in danger!

  14. @All
Wow, Self-Conceit Shah Rukh Khan gives his “opinion” about Mohamed, sellout media calls it unparliamentary language (What Mohamed has to do with Parliament? Yeah go figure that out), FIR is immediately filed for “hurting religious sentiments” and he back tracks.

Karunanidhi abuses God Shri Ram, Sita Mata, etc., minor protests happen (because we are too lazy to go out), sellout media ridicules the protests as inconvenience to daily commuters, all hail to nonexistent freedom of speech, mythical economist regent manmoron singh doesn’t loose his sleep, no FIR is allowed to be filed, Lady Bountiful expedites the destruction of World Heritage Shri Ram Setu and Anti-Hindu bigot Karunanidhi has the last laugh.

Same country… but two different results.

I can’t understand. How sensitive are these jerks that one off-the-cuff remark can hurt their rasool? Even Iranians have come out of closet in past 10-15 days but Mullahs in Bharat seem too happy to just live in 600 AD bubble and force others to do so too.

Why did I say nonexistent freedom of speech? Please read “Johann Hari has Hindu Phobia” and “London Bridge is burning down…” for answers.

    @Hemant
Censorship by CNN IBN… Really? Check this out my friend: “Editorial slandering of Hindu symbols by CNN-IBN”
