W’end Links: Nehru, Astrology, History and Obama

Start your weekend with this fascinating article on “Jawaharlal Nehru and Astrology” by K N Rao (Thanks to Sh Krishen Kak for alerting me to this):

…Nehru was a Kashmiri pandit, His uncle Bansidhar Nehru was a Sanskrit scholar and an astrologer. His father Motilal Nehru depended on the court astrologer of the state of Khetri for the horoscopes of his family. (see my book, the Nehru Dynasty) Those horoscopes were used for all those important occasions when Hindus take astrological approval for their decisions, mainly marriage. It was on this ground, astrological basis, that Kamla Nehru, the non-English knowing Kashmiri beauty from Sitaram Bazar, Delhi, was chosen for the European Jawaharlal Nehru who never went to an Indian school in India and had no Indian classmates.

…The myth of Jawaharlal Nehru being anti-astrology would have persisted if in a major paper on astrology, the following had not appeared. It was the year 1983 and an astrological conference at Bangalore where in a major paper of mine containing tabulated predictions, given in advance, the prefatory remarks were Letter No.74 From Jawaharlal Nehru Ahmadnagar Fort To Krishna Hutheesing-20 Carmichael Road, Bombay 29.8.1944 :

” In my letter to Indu I suggested to her to ask you to get a proper horoscope made by competent person. Such permanent record of the date and the time of birth are desirable. As for the time, I suppose the proper solar time should be mentioned and not the artificial time which is being used outside now. War time is at least an hour ahead of the normal time” (Nehru’s letters to his sister-edited with an introduction by Krishna Hutheesing-Faber and Faber,24 Russel Square, London).

I then added the following comment.”Surprisingly this portion has been omitted by the editor of the letters of Pandit Nehru published by the Publications Division
of Government of India, perhaps in his overanxiety to preserve the “secular” image of Pandit Nehru. The editor exercised his selective judgment in a way as will distort some facets of the personality of Nehru”

The battle had begun between the “progressive and secular” writers of Indian history and astrologers with this paper of mine. The salutary effect of this was that when Volume 13 of Nehru’s letters were published, the following letter to Indira Gandhi contained the following additional information.

“Betty no doubt will take necessary steps to have a ‘Janmapatri” ( Hindi) made. This should be done for that is our traditional way to record the exact date and time of birth, the date according to Samvat Calendar, as far as I can make it out is Bhadrapad 2-Samvat 2001, or put it differently second day of the bright half of the Moon in the month of Bhadra Samvat 2001. Betty writes time of birth was 8.11 a.m. But what time? The time observed now is war time which is at least one hour ahead of normal time, possibly more. It is thus the artificial time and not the real time, according to which Moon should be when Sun is highest in the heaven…… Letter No.77

S.Gopal, the editor of Nehru’s letters got a clear warning that if he suppressed relevant and authentic material from Nehru papers which showed that Kashmiri Brahmin’s belief in astrology, he would be dragged to court besides being exposed. So he came with another letter this time which Nehru wrote to his daughter Indira Gandhi after the birth of her first son, Rajiv Gandhi.It was thus, from December 1983 that the myth of Nehru’s anti astrology image of exploded.

Next, a brief excerpt from “Challenging Sex Taboos, With Help From the Koran”:

Wedad Lootah does not look like a sexual activist. A Muslim and a native Emirati, she wears a full-length black niqab — with only her brown eyes showing through narrow slits — and sprinkles her conversation with quotes from the Koran.

Yet she is also the author of what for the Middle East is an amazingly frank new book of erotic advice in which she celebrates the female orgasm, confronts taboo topics like homosexuality and urges Arabs to transcend the backward traditions that limit their sexual happiness.

The book, “Top Secret: Sexual Guidance for Married Couples,” is packed with vivid anecdotes from Ms. Lootah’s eight years as a marital counselor in Dubai’s main courthouse. It became an instant scandal after it was published in Arabic in the Emirates in January, drawing praise from some liberals and death threats from conservatives, who say she is guilty of blasphemy or worse.

Move on to Varnam’s Op-Ed in Pragati: “Getting Objective about it”:

In January 2009, US network PBS telecast a documentary titled The Story of India. Hosted by Michael Wood,this six-part series narrated a compressed history of India from pre-historic times till Independence. The first episode—Beginnings—-discussed one of the most controversial topics in Indian history: the origin of the Aryans.

In this episode Mr Wood did three things. Standing at Khyber Pass, looking down at the valley of Kabul river, he quoted the translation of a verse from Baudhayana Srautasutra which reads, “some went east..but some stayed at home in the west”. This verse, Wood opined, suggests an Aryan migration from Afghanistan into India.

Second, he went to Turkmenistan to meet Viktor Sarianidi, the legendary Russian archaeologist, who besides unearthing the Bactrian gold in northern Afghanistan, found horses, wheeled vehicles and mud-brick fire altars in Gonur Tepe, Turkmenistan. According to Dr Sarianidi, the Aryans arrived there around 2000 BC and left in 1800 BC towards Afghanistan.

Third, Mr Wood mentioned a 1786 discovery by the polyglot Sir William Jones on the similarities between Sanskrit and various European languages, due to which if a Sanskrit speaker mentioned the word ashva, a Lithuanian farmer would know exactly what he meant. All these indicated that the ancestors of the Aryans were part of a language group which spread from the area between Caspian sea and Aral mountains 4000 years ago. As per this theory, these Sanskrit speaking newcomers subjugated the natives—Dravidians and tribals—and established themselves at the top of the caste hierarchy.

Sounds logical, but Mr Wood’s claims are controvertible. According to B B Lal, who was the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, the correct translation of Baudhayana Srautasutra says that while some Aryan tribes went east and the others went west from some intermediary point. This intermediary point for Dr Lal is not the valley of the Kabul river, but that of the Indus.

And finally a thought-provoking article by Tavleen Singh titled, “Obama needs some more lessons in Islam”

The jihad did not appear one morning out of a clear blue sky. It happened because of a system of education in most Islamic countries that perpetuates the idea that Islam is the best thing that happened to mankind and that pluralism is wrong in Allah’s eyes. As for us happy idol-worshipping types, we are doomed to damnation. This idea is in direct conflict with the Indian idea of ‘sarva dharma samabhaava’. But, it is more than just religion that is the problem.

The Islamic sense of grievance is now so confused that the Americans are blamed for ‘abandoning’ Afghanistan after the Russians were defeated. Now that they are back, they are blamed for interfering in Islamic affairs. In the Middle East the stated objective of the jihad is to obliterate Israel but if Israel attempts to resist this fate it is charged with being brutal to Palestinians. It may not be politically correct to say this but the truth is that there could have been a solution in Palestine decades ago if Yasser Arafat had not been corrupt and amoral.

…What saddened me most about President Obama’s speech was that without actually apologising for America’s mistakes he made it sound as if all the mistakes were on one side. It would have been nice when he mentioned American mistakes if he had mentioned a few made by Islamic countries. Pakistan ran a black market in nuclear bombs. Saudi money builds madrasas in Indian villages that poison our happy heathen atmosphere. The war with the United States was started by Osama bin Laden. India is under constant threat from terrorist groups that continue to be nurtured by the Pakistani state. The release of Sayeed is proof. And, the reaction of President Obama’s government is to give Pakistan more aid than ever before.

    @Varnam’s Op-Ed

    Michael Wood in the same documentary also stood in Ayodhya (one of the seven Holy cities for Hindus) and called it a fairy tale city. Yeah, he was standing in the city (reality) and calling it mythical. I lost my interest in the series right there and then. I know the documentary showed Bharat’s beauty and diversity blah blah blah. But I know all that already. I don’t need reaffirmation from some white guy telling me what I already know and of what I am proud of. What I definitely don’t need is some white t***h calling the birthplace of our God Shri Ram as a mythical fairytale city. If my existence is truth. If existence of my respectable parents is truth. If existence of my respectable ancestors is truth. If my heritage & genealogy which goes back to one of the greatest Rishi (Seer) to have walked the Prithvi is truth. If existence of 790 Million Hindus on Mother Prithvi is truth. Then existence of Sanatan Vedic Dharm, all the historical people in Bharat’s Vedic history and all the cities related to it is truth. I don’t need approval and acceptance from some westerner, especially from Anti-Hindu bigots like Karunanidhi, to believe in existence of our God.

    Frankly, I didn’t see that first part where he contributed in perpetuation of the mythological theory of Aryan Invasion in Gullible Psyche of Westerners, Apologist section of Hindus & Pseudo-Seculars because I started watching the episodes a little late in the series. Had I seen this episode, I wouldn’t have been surprised at his fairy tale comment.

    I would like to bring this to everyone’s notice that at 2nd Hindu-Jewish Leadership Summit in Jerusalem, Israel from February 17 2008, a declaration was signed between Hindus (led by our respectable Seers) and Jews (led by respectable Chief Rabbi of Israel). Following is an excerpt from that declaration of common understanding between Hindus and Jews as it stands today:
    ====
    The nine-point Declaration broadly (a) reaffirms the common Hindu and Jewish belief in One Supreme Being both in its formless and manifest aspects; (b) expresses their common world view of the sanctity of human life; (c) recognizes that all religions are sacred for their people and therefore, no one should denigrate or interfere in the religious practice of others; (d) recognizes that the Svastika is an ancient Hindu symbol and was misappropriated by the Third Reich; and (e) calls for serious reconsideration of the Aryan Migration Theory–a largely discredited, racist theory that posits that an invasion by nomadic, non-Indian tribes conceived the Vedic civilization.
    =====

    Please note in particular, the recognition of Svastika’s auspiciousness in the Hindu tradition and denouncement of mythical racist theory of Aryan Invasion were monumental steps in building an understanding between the two religions.

    Now this is secularism and not this.

  2. B Shantanu says:

    Satyabhashanam: Thanks for sharing the secularism link:

    As India is a Secular Nation, Non Hindus can be employed in Temple – AP Government

    I wonder whether the same logic can/will be applied to Mosques and Chruches.

    Unbelievable.

  3. B Shantanu says:

    P.S. Could it be that Hindus prefer other employment opportunities than working in temples?

    Just a thought.

  4. @Shantanu (#3)

    May be. But that doesn’t give a right to the government to shove their politically biased choice of human resources down the throats of Hindu organizations and Temples. If you look at that Minister’s arrogant tone, he sounds as if he is making an example out of Hindus. Why only Temples, their administration and their funds are still in government control when Mosques, Churches, etc. are free to prosper and propagate? Why are temple funds and tax payers money used for Hajj subsidies and now Bethlehem subsidies (thanks to AP’s Samuel Reddy) while no such privilege is given to Hindus visiting Shri Kailash Mansarovar? Why are temple funds used for Hajj (ironically subsidies are considered haram as per Islam) in the first place and not for protection, reservation and development of Temple & Temple led Educational & Research institutes? What kind of Secularism is this? USCIRF wants to research religious freedom in Bharat, how about pressurizing Bharatiya government to free and let go of its dictatorial unethical control of Hindu temples for a start?

    But USCIRF will not do that because their vested interest doesn’t let them see beyond Gujarat and Orissa. Why not visit North East states, Silchar (Hindu temples burnt and destroyed, West Bengal (this and this), Orissa (murdered Hindu Seers and this), Kashyap Mar (misnomer: Kashmir, over 565 temples destroyed since Kashmiri Hindus were persecuted and/or thrown out, Hindu holocaust during 2nd Jihadist wave between 1000 AD and 1500 AD:- watch about it at 55:44 time marker), Tamil Nadu, Kerela (this and this), Andhra (बौद्धिक आतंकवाद / Intellectual Terrorism), etc. for a change? Or how about 1984 Anti-Sikh Pogrom by Congress or countless riots in UP (recent eg. this and this)? Or even persecution of Hindus in other countries like Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc.?

    So why is Congress government’s recent diktat a one way street? If they are so “secular” then why isn’t Minister of Minority (Appeasement) Affairs a Hindu or a Jew or Sikh or from some other religion/ethinic/racial/cult background other than being Muslim? Wouldn’t that be secularism by this humbug logic that Congress preaches & practices? Do they think a Hindu, etc. would not do justice such post? Aren’t they discriminating on the basis of religion then? Why not also have a Ministry of Majority Affairs as a ombudsman to see to it that Majority (conveniently demonized Hindus) doesn’t get short changed or reverse discriminated in the name of this so-called affirmative action?

    You are right Shantanu bhai we all wonder if the same logic will be applied to Mosques and Churches. But deep down we all know the answer is no. Above mentioned are few of the stark examples of this whole facade called Secularism (as practiced in Bharat).

  5. Khandu Patel says:

    I agree entirely with the above comments. Some of these interventions are because of the open invitations we have provided. The issue also goes to the root of our identity. As I understand it, temple posts have only been open to Brahmins and legislation is certainly prising open what is an abuse if we are ever to reform the Hindu religion.

    My own reading on the matter is that the VHP has been training priests for service in the UK but they have had to be brahmins. We have had a whole history of the Hindu religion that had progressively to be prised open. We are now at a stage when the Bhagavid Gita was written in mind for all Hindus to study and live by. Yet, we would not know because orthadox Hindu still go solely by the Vedes. I have nothing against scholarship which informs, and I have the greatest admiration for the brahmins for keeping the study of sanskrit alive by these means but it is something they should be willing to share with the Hindu family?

    The other reason for an open invitation for the intervention is that Hinduism itself claims to be so secular that no matter what the religion their Gods is one and same with the God of the Hindu religion. It goes without saying that they violently disagree but as it has suited them, the consequence for Hinduism has been that it ended up among other things funding the Haj.

    It would not be long before the Cripto Christians in India claim temple positions so coveted by brahmins as a means of destroying Hinduism in India once and for all. With Sonia Gandhi in power, it is an opportunity she is not likely to relinquish for the benefit of her followers.

    Unless Hindu people can demonstrate the necessary presence of mind, its fate is sealed. I have seen nothing in India’s Hindu leadership which inclines me to be confident that they have a grasp of what is really happening.

    All of us in these discussions are agast at the failings in India’s leadership in modern times. Our great ancient civilisation should have equated to India as the great superpower of today. Others have renewed themselves by other means. What we cannot do as a people is to simply stand by on old habits and beliefs without recasting ourselves by rising to the challenges of todays world.

    One way or other, India’s future will be settled as a reinvigorated Hindu nation or pale imitation of a Christian vasal state.

  6. harish says:

    Khandu,
    Can’t agree more. The social change in the hindu society should undoubtedly come from the brahmins . They should stop the holier than thou attitude. I say why should one hold the tag of a brahmin if their actions arent brahminical? I for one being born as a brahmin by caste cannot call myself a brahmin in the true sense. Don’t we have enough examples of shudras and kshatriya born exalted to brahminical position like Sage Vyasa, Vishwamitra etc. I think people from other castes also must be allowed to take up priesthood. The folks in BJP and VHP have no clarity on these issues, since they would not want to “hurt” the sentiments of the upper castes.
