Spare a thought for these babies…

Several weeks ago, I came across a post by BarbarIndian on the unusually large number of accidents that were being reported in the media about babies being burnt alive in hospitals – specifically due to fires caused by short-circuit in the incubators…

Barbar concluded his post (in which he had identified three recent instances where seven babies had died) by saying:

Now that would have to be one heck of a coincidence and an extremely tragic one too. Of course the respective Goverment agencies are running their own investigations. There is no indication that this coincidence was noticed, at least till the last time we checked the news.

If you happen to know someone connected to the medical profession or from the health department, please bring this to their attention.

This isn’t normal.

I emailed his post to an expert in Neo-Natology who is also a Professor in Paediatrics. This is the response I received…

Dear Shantanu,

I am aware of this unfortunate incident.

The whole issue is of QA (Quality assurance), Quality consciousness. If this Govt Hospital’s wiring is of a poor quality, outdated, likely to have breaks etc and prone to short-circuit, who does routine preventive maintenace to ensure things are in optimal condition?

The Phototherapy units (The machine is a device which has tube lights whose light is used to treat jaundice) which caught fire were made by indian manufacturer. The chokes of tubes may have been old, worn out, liable for this kind of a hazard but who checks them. It is not the nurse or Doc on duty who is to be punished, it is the system. No accountability.

I feel extremely upset at such incidents. The Govt system’s stupid redtapism compels the hospital to buy the lowest cost equipment if the specifications of the equipment asked by the user are met by say 3-4 companies. Hospital cannot go for quality equipment because they are expensive. So it is all a vicious cycle in which innocents who have no right to info suffer.

Makes you feel really really sad…Sometime I despair at the challenges we face as a country and society. ..Today is one of those days.

I too feel sad about it! Safety is the last word general public is familiar about in India. No safety in schools, hospitals, playgrounds, industries and also in their homes. There must be a education regarding safety in schools from kindergarten and also once they are grown up. Their first attention is to safe environment in their as well as in others’ life.

This is one thing very near to my heart to do in future educating children on how to be safe and to see for danger around by showing them real life incidents.

Thanks for bringing very educative post.

It is time to despair, my friend.

Any system that does not reward performance, does not have accountability, and cannot safeguard its weakest and most delicate can hardly be expected to create a system where these traits are upheld as virtues.

Till sarkar is not replaced by shasan, we are well and truly screwed.

    Another angle/take to this…

I don’t think this is just about red-tapisim.

These problems/issues are there because the Govt/public system is Insensitive, Aimless, and Corrupt.

Most of the people there are not working by mission to serve, or mission to care – they are working there for a govt job, they are working there because they just have to work, they are working there because they intend to siphon money from the public system.

Many of them do not know what is Dharam, and many do not care for Dharam altogether.

One of the major reasons is that our culture has got severely corrupt. In Hindi, Sanskaar, Samvedansheelta, Sanyam (Dhairya, Patience), Sadaachar khatma ho gaya hai. Most of the general public is working like Shoodra, and others like Vaishaya (to make money). Vaishya vritti (money mindedness) is reining throughout most of the system. There are hardly any leaders (Kshatriya, and Brahman), and most have moved to fertile grounds, or better private companies.

Its only a very few that fight the war to fix the system.

It seems its for this reason Swami Ramdev started his work first to improve health of people, and linked to that and next step is to fix the mind of people. Yog/Pranayam builds base of calm mind, and introspective mind, a reflective mind.

He has been running his awareness and awakening campaign for over 14 years now. For past 5 years his awareness and awakening campaign is telecast on Aastha live, 3.5 hours a day.

Now his movement has transformed to, or has come to its full shape – in the form of Bharat Swabhiman Sangathan. One of the purpose of BST is to improve the Personal and National Character of the people of India.

It seems Swami Ramdev is a far-sighted person, and has considered many many issues, and solutions for most of them.

Now there is another source available to get a clear view of what Swami Ramdev intends, and is trying to to – Yog Sandesh magazine of Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust.

Its softcopy version has always been free to download. On there site’s main page, at the bottom left is the link to the softcopy download.

This month’s issue is specially on Bharat Swabhiman Trust/movement. Here is direct download link.

My request everyone do read it once. Its in English, and is full of invaluable insights and knowledge.

I too read a similar case published in Femina magazine’s February issue. This woman had not given any details about her and had asked for legal advise on a similar case where even after a request by this lady to keep the incubator in her room but the request was rejected by the nurses and to that woman’s horror at midnight there baby had serious burns and didn’t survive. None of the nurses was around. There was a bulb lit in the incubator to provide heat to the premature. I was horrified after reading this and could acctually feel what that mother must be going through. Because of someone else’s negligence a woman lost her baby she carried for nine months and didn’t get see for 2 days. Hospital staffs in India are careless and corrupt. Everyone must have heard about the Sion Hospital’s baby theft. It’s heartbreaking to hear such cases where helpless babies are the victims of these negligences.

    @Vikram

Ask Ramdevbaba about the video of superbrain Yoga which shantanu has placed in another post. May be he can help us in his own way. Please atleast you inform him about this, I don’t want hijackers to hijack this ‘kan patti’ yoga. It is the trade mark of old school’s masters.

  7. vikram says:

    @Indian

Not seen the superbrain yoga video yet.

However still want to mention that, I am in no way associated with Swami Ramdev, or his organization. Its just that I notice and admire the work being done by him, and have benefited a lot from what he tells openly in the TV programs.

I do not have any contact no. or email to him. Just the publicly available information, incase anyone anyone may be interested in…

The deaths continue: Seven newborn babies die in hospital, Andhra orders probe
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday ordered a probe into the death of seven newborn babies, allegedly due to faulty incubators at a government-run hospital.

Health Minister D. Nagender ordered an enquiry into the incident that took place at Old Government Hospital in Vijayawada city.

Does anyone know more about these incubators? Which is the company that makes them etc? Can a RTI be filed on this, I wonder?
