Whats wrong with the media…

Short excerpt from an interview withArianna Huffington(slightly dated but the point is still valid – more so in the Indian context – emphasis mine)

“Wired News: You don’t pull punches when discussing the state of media today. What’s wrong with it?

Arianna Huffington: The problem isn’t that the stories I care about aren’t being covered, it’s that they aren’t being covered in the obsessive way that breaks through the din of our 500-channel universe. Because those 500 channels don’t mean we get 500 times the examination and investigation of worthy news stories. It often means we get the same narrow, conventional-wisdom wrap-ups repeated 500 times.

Paradoxically, in these days of instant communication and 24-hour news channels, it’s actually easier to miss information we might otherwise pay attention to.

That’s why we need stories to be covered and re-covered and re-re-covered and covered again — until they filter up enough to become part of the cultural bloodstream.

As for improving the quality of journalism, we must (find) ways to give mainstream journalism what it most desperately needs: a spine transplant.”

Indian journalism desperately needs a spine transplant. While covering the UP Elecction results the headlines of NDTV wassilent about the rout of congress and the communists. It celebrated the rout of BJP. With the chosen panel openly haappy that the Hindu party was defeated and they celebrated the success of secularism.

On second thoughts even with a spine transplant, the media in India seems hopeless

I strongly believe that Journalism should be above favoritism and must strictly be transparent at all costs. Unfortunately, Indian media has become so biased that they forget what is important and what is not!
Our patriotism begins with cricket players and ends with movie stars. Only they form the headlines no matter what else is going on!

I have been watching a South Indian(supposed to be news) channel….there was a hot debate on whether a particular actor must enter politics or not. His latest movie is a super hit and he threatened he could kill the enemies with his looks (I am not kidding, there is a dialog to that effect apparently), so, he would make a good candidate. This is what the media has come to and this is what it wants its viewers to be debating about. No other issues problems in the country….all izzz well. I feel ashamed about the stupidity of people who worship all these demi gods and look up to them to solve the problems. This stupidity is the gift from the media that creates this hype. If looks could really kill, don’t you think we should have all the movie heroes in Army serving in the borders?

What the Indian media needs is not a spine transplant but a complete autopsy and a re-birth.
