This, not reservations, is the answer – II

Some of you may remember a post I wrote earlier thisyear mentioning an unusual (and very innovative) initiative in various cities in India that involved training students (and particularly girl students) from scheduled tribes and scheduled castes for cutting-edge jobs in the private sector.

A few weeks ago, I came across another initiative which struck me as a novel and truly path-breaking effortto promote literacy in some of the desperately poor tribal areas of Orissa.

The lady who is directing this effort is Parama Karuna-ji. Parama-ji is Italian in origin…but is as far removed as you can think from India’s most famous lady who shares her country ofbirth.

She runs a school near Puri in Orissa imparting education to rural children from nearby villages. Unlike most other charitable initiatives, Parama’s efforts are aimed (in her own words) at “creating a wave of self-reliant, responsible, proactive people to become genuine leaders and members of an ideal Hindu society at global level, making Bharat a true leader of Nations”

There is more information available atwww.pavan.org.in andyou can reach Parama-ji on paramakaruna AT rediffmail.com OR paramakaruna AT gmail.com [ OR xparamakaruna AT yahoo.com ]

Parama-ji and her organisation needs support and help.

If you feel, you can contribute anything at all, please do get in touch with her…I think at the very least you will be impressed by her sincerity and commitment to the welfare of these children.

Dearest Shantanu, Namaskar and Hari Om!

Thank you very much for publishing about me and my work in Orissa.
I would like to add a little more information for your readers.

The social work that our registered NGO (called PAVAN) is performing is aimed at helping rural and tribal people in India in developing self-reliance, proactive approaches and sense of responsibility and cooperation. The NGO offers training, know-how and practical assistance for education and sustainable development, especially in agriculture and local-level economy.

The school is Oriya/English medium, and I also teach special classes with educational games to develop the brain power, creativity, communication and cooperation skills of the students.

I also personally train the Teachers to improve their ability to help students to develop higher IQ, better communication (especially in English so that they can access information at global level), and better sastric knowledge.

We have organised Seminars on Sustainable Development in Rural and Tribal Areas and our contacts there have asked us to open some branches and schools in their areas. This is something we will certainly do as soon as we have sufficient funds. 🙂

In the meantime we are concentrating our efforts on our project in Puri, especially by creating a hostel so that students from tribal areas can stay and study here.

Our work is presented on three websites, each studied for a particular target audience:
http://www.jagannatha.net (about the Jagannatha Vallabha Vedic Research Center), http://www.pavan.org.in (about the secular registered NGO), http://www.dharmaseva.net (about dialogue and cooperation with various groups)

I will send more information and I will be happy to discuss with all Friends who will write to me at:

    paramakaruna AT rediffmail.com
    jagannathavallabha AT rediffmail.com
    xparamakaruna AT yahoo.com
    dharmacharini AT yahoo.com

    Thank you again,

    PKD

A great effort to improve India:

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) Wednesday launched its own foundation to impart professional business management training to candidates from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

The foundation has been set up with an initial investment of Rs.50 million, and it intends to increase the size of its fund to Rs.250 million in a year’s time. The education and training would be provided free of charge.

“Assocham would provide professional courses in business management to 300 SCs and STs candidates absolutely free of cost taking care of fees, boarding and lodging, books and stationery and even clothing,” said D.S. Rawat, Assocham secretary general.

The body would also ensure that all the candidates who pass out are absorbed in various sectors of Indian industry.

In the last one year, Assocham, in association with various universities across the country, provided coaching facilities for 1,000 students for proficiency in English language communication, and computer skills as well as personality development.
