JAMMU: The Indian Air Force would phase out the MIG aircraft in a gradual manner and replace these with Multi Roll Combat fighters, being purchased from the US and Russia, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Air Marshal AK Singh said in Jammu.

“The phasing out of the entire MIG fleet would not be done at one time and immediately. It would be done in a phased manner with minimum requirement of the IAF being fulfilled,” he told reporters on Sunday night.

Pointing out that the new aircraft would be technologically more advanced than MIGs, Singh said 120 MIG Bisan (Type 75) aircraft, also known as MIG WIZ, were recently upgraded and would be in use for another one-and-half decade.

On air accidents, he said “I am glad to inform that rate of accidents per thousand hours has dropped to 0.6 from 2.8 five years back.

Our aim is that in the next two to three years, we bring it down to zero, though it might not be possible because we are still depending on old technology.”…
