“Saluting our Heroes” and a labour of love

Dear Friends, I’m delighted to announce that my compilation of posts featuring Param Vir Chakra awardees is finally complete.  The series started with a simple idea on a lazy summer afternoon of 2009 – and soon became a labour of love…I pored over numerous articles and web pages to do my research while writing this series…but not for a moment did I feel that the effort was in vain. Writing about these brave men – and their exploits – was perhaps the most inspiring and motivating thing I have done in a very long time. The “book” is now ready. I intend to formally release it on 26th July, on the occasion of “Kargil Vijay Diwas” which marks the most remarkable week of “Operation Vijay” that ended with the award of four Param Vir Chakras.

Needless to add, writing this series has been an extraordinary and extremely fulfilling experience. Each post reminded me of how fortunate and blessed we are to have people like these defend our borders and our freedoms…Sadly the stories of these “Param Veers” are not widely known. This is a humble effort to change that…

The “book” is available to purchase online in India. Outside India, I would suggest you order a pdf copy by making a modest contribution here (The amount is entirely up to you)..

All the funds raised from the sale of this book will be channeled into my various activities. I will be seeking donations to help me publish large quantities that can be printed/ distributed locally in schools in various cities across India. If you can help with this (even in terms of just managing logistics etc), pl leave a comment below or email me. I would also like to hear from anyone who can help translate this into Indian languages.

This effort would not have come to fruition without the unstinted support of my wife and daughter – who sacrificed countless hours of their time – so that I could work on these blog posts and help spread awareness about these heroes. This is our very humble tribute to the ones who did not come back. They died so that we can live – in peace. Let us ensure that these men are not forgotten. Let us ensure that the stories of their valour are told and re-told. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!

    Shantanu,

This indeed is a great effort. Thanks for doing it.

One of the first things that unites most of USA is the celebration of their heroes. No one, except for the extreme far left, lose an opportunity to say “our military is the best, brightest … young men and women”.

India has come a long way in which our vIra-s were eulogized to days when they are are moved in garbage trucks. We have, as Shri Aurobindo says, lost our kshatriyatva (and become a baniya culture, with no offense meant to vaishyas).

We need to go back to the good old days when the exploits of bhIma, arjuna and more particularly abhimanyu (perhaps the first war hero) were told to young kids to cultivate the sense of ksatriyatva. I am sure that your book would help in that effort.

Great work. I wish if someone could make a movie on Maj Shaitan Singh. That was a great battle. Our men fought till last round, last man and last breadth.

I also suggest you to mail a copy to COAS. Its my feeling that you will be doing a great service by doing so.

    regards

    Hi Shantanu,

I am truly humbled by these posts over time and I think its a great thing that you are doing.
I am more than willing to help with regards to distribution of this book. Please mail me in regards to this, the South Delhi elite would be receiving many copies from me and I will somehow make sure they read it 😀 I also have a suggestion to make, as this is something hardly anyone would disagree with ideologically – why not each one of us(if willing) distribute it to their ex schools. Saluting Our Heroes along with Atanu’s Transforming India should be must shared widely.

    Looking forward to your e-mail.

    Jai Bharat!

Narendra and Kshitij: Apologies for the delay in responding and I am truly grateful for your kind offers of assistance.
I will separately email both of you to follow up on this. Thanks for the excellent suggestion Kshitij..
