N.B. I have not been able to read and verify the document at the link yet.
The government is getting agititated with all the coalgate, 3G scams and the tanking economy. So in lieu of any real governance, they want to go after journalists and the internet. The worst part is that other than the BJP and a few others, there is no massive outcry. Certainly no group of journalists are protesting. In fact Arnav Goswami on Times Now said that he didn’t have a point of view on censorship. Wow! I always love it when people start spouting the concept of sensitivities and responsible journalism and how hate speech is bad. What the government of India wants to do is to control all speech and in doing so, all thoughts and ideas. No one should dissent from their particular point of view. This sets a dangerous precedent where one authoritative institution can decide what can and cannot be said.
This banning of sites as opposed to going after specific perpetrators of intimidation and violence shows the weakness of the Indian state.
I don’t understand what is going on here. “It has been decided.” Decided for what reason? Perhaps there was some satisfactory explanation attached with this order. If not, one would expect the media would protest loudly and demand that they rescind it.
