Wish Aamir Khan had read Swami Vivekananda..

Earlier today, I stumbled on this quote by Aamir Khan (in the context of his upcoming serial “Satyamev Jayate”):

..we are not here to make a change. I am no one to change anything.

I don’t think I am in the position to change anything..

I am very disappointed..This “helplessness” is alien to Bharat.. I wish Aamir would have read Swami Vivekananda..in particular..

Ye are the children of God..the sharers of immortal bliss, holy and perfect beings.

Ye divinities on earth – sinners!  It is a sin to call man so; it is a standing libel on human nature.

Come up, lions! and shake off the delusion that you are sheep; you are souls immortal, spirits free, blest and eternal.

Maybe I am deviating , but aren’t we Indians / Bharatwasis prone to avoiding activitism – it is ‘ how does it matter to me ‘ for most of people around us. It is this blase attitude = chalta hai attitude which lies at the root of most of our problems and our wretched condition in our country and our reputation across the world. We see people breaking simple laws all around us and we do not react. what stops us from at least going up and asking the law breakers to desist from what they are doing ? Swamiji said this over a 100 years ago, but it has not awoken us. I believe, we – everyone of us – in our small way -should try to make a difference , wherever, howsoever , we can – we must do it.

Hi Shantanu, I believe in doing things, which I feel are correct. My children will weigh and judge its rightness with time. I am nobody to change them but still can continue my part, in the course, they might do something even better.

  3. Rohith says:

@Dubey: I feel that the diagnosis of the so called Indian apathy being “chalta hai” attitude is wrong.

When most of the laws are unjust, people will break it. The unfortunate thing is that many people simply dont have the time to analyze which laws are just and needs to be followed for greater good of India and which laws are unjust to individual freedom. Given that most of the Indian Laws are carryforward laws of British India, most laws are unjust to individual freedom. When most laws are unjust, you cant expect most people, who dont have time, to make a distinction between just laws and unjust laws.

On the other hand, even Police know this. But as the constables and other low level officers are illtreated in the department, they take their frustration on these so called “law-breakers”, they wont have the motivation to uphold the law as police know two things: that most of them are unjust and constables dont get recognition anyway. So they allow the people to “break the law” for a “fee” 🙂

Reorganize the police and depoliticize it (like we depoliticized the army after the 1962 war), my guess is that police will be strict in implementing the unjust laws and people shout at the elected representatives for having these unjust laws in the first place.

Bottomline is that, apathy is not because of DNA of Indians or Culture of Indians. It is because of the system in which Indians are forced to function.

I stand to differ.Since he is on the show and presenting the issue to people,I feel people should bring the change and not aamir khan.As history suggests one man can not change a thing or it does not last for long until and unless the people involved (mass) thinks the same way.

I feel he is trying to say that I am awakened for the change, its time for the people to awaken for the change. He do not have any ‘Jadoo ki chhadi’ to make the change happen, but the people on their own can force the change.

  6. RajDhawal says:

My perception on this is simple – Aamir says he is not here to change. So, TRUE – absolutely !!! He cannot change us by showing this. Instead, the focus is on showing that harsh reality – a mirror of the society we live in. A mirror that questions our basic thought process. How many of us did not know this happens ? one or the other way we were aware that such a things happening – how many of us took this seriously ? What is the system doing ? Its an eye opener and symbolises our choice of ignorance. I like these parts in particular –
when it was realized that it was the Govt that initiated this idea
when it was mentioned the Journos involved were issued warrants
when questions were posed to Rajathans Govt
Still, the message was not to point finger but plainly show that mirror.

How many such TV programmes give an opportunity to the public to voice out their opinions.

And Frankly, this is what a superstar is supposed to do – use his stardom to awaken the people, improve the system – he has achieved what he had to achieve in life – at least an attempt is made to improve our Indian conditions. Full marks to Aamir Khan. Imagine, how easy it would have been to be an owner of an IPL team :)… food for thought ppl ! Also, cant wait to watch this next episode.

Deep down inside, we all know right from wrong. So when we deny our integrity, and when we don’t stand up for what we really feel and think, there are always consequences.
So lets correct or change ourselves first.See & understand where we are lacking & work on it.Raise our voice as & when it is required rather then becoming just a ear to listen to the shit..!!

  9. Umesh K Dubey says:

@Rohith – I am 100% with you on our unjust laws. I too believe that our laws have been written by an occupying power and were meant to subjugate Indians who the British believed to be inferior to their own. I also believe that this is a prime reason for our top heavy god-sent bureacracy which runs the country in very much the same way the British did it earlier. But then, what prevents us from standing up and fighting for what is right. As a symptom of what I am saying – just look at the way we behave and we ourselves are treated by others on the road. The road rules are not especially repressive or illogical. But why do we take delight in getting ahead by hook or by crook ? Why do we not think of the other users on the road ? And as for the apathy – can you tell me why should I not boycott a taxi or a bus or an auto which breaks rules ? This is the chalta-hai attitude to which I was referring. I think both these – the laws/ bureacracy on one side and the attitude on the other are pulling us down.
Finally, apologies to Shantanu and everybody elsefor getting away from the topic of discussion here. I missed the first episode, and hence I cannot comment on it.

  10. Kamal says:

I think it is a clever ploy by the channel people to not take it upon themselves that they are suggesting in any way that they want to change things. From the program it will look like Aamir Khan is prodding people to change and he may himself have issues with projecting such an image of a salable star. That strategy may boomerang on the success of the program also by its potential to get embroiled in controversies, protests and possible ban. I feel he would have done a great bit to bring the kind of issues they are talking about in public domain and leave it to people to decide what action they want to be part of…after all revolutions are not brought just by existence of a star/great person, it is the masses support which clicks at the end and for that arousal of a feeling of deficiency/wrong/challenge is the first job which I think they should do without getting derailed.

The concluding question of this “interview” was:
Q: “Did you face any religious dilemma while you were married to a Hindu lady Reena Dutta and later on to Kiran Rao?”

A: No, none whatsoever. We never practiced each other’s religion neither did we force each other to do so. But, of course, I had made it very clear that my kids will always follow only Islamic religion.

I dont expect Aamir Khan to start the show with saying – I am here to bring all the changes, I will solve all the problems etc etc. I think he just being humble when he says that he’s nobody to bring a change. I guess its the same language almost every leader uses. There’s no point in delving too much on the opening lines or facial expression of the host. He ultimately went on to meet the CM of Rajasthan and ultimately some firm steps were taken, all this within a week’s time. I don’t expect anything more than this out of a TV show. Yours a great blog, a great resource and a source of inspiration for several people like me. It will be good to use this forum to generate positive criticism, to discuss real issues and if possible try to solve them. Thanks for such a wonderful blog.

Dear All: Sorry for not being able to respond earlier…
At the outset, let me emphasise that the aim of the post was *not* to criticise Aamir Khan or his show (pl note the title)..
It was to point out the self-defeatist attitude that I see among the well-to-do Indians..I have talked about this point before…(e.g. pl see the short snippet at the end of the comment)

    On to your specific points:

@Umesh: Well said, “I believe, we – everyone of us – in our small way -should try to make a difference , wherever, howsoever , we can – we must do it.
    Exactly my thoughts

@Saurabh: “I am nobody to change them..” but we have to TRY and change them Saurabh..giving up is not an option/ Sorry if I misunderstood you..

@Rohith: Yes, bad/stupid laws are certainly part of the problem (major part)..This needs to be repeated in bold: most laws are unjust to individual freedom. When most laws are unjust, you cant expect most people, who dont have time, to make a distinction between just laws and unjust laws.” Thanks

@Sanjay and RajDhawal: I was not making the point about who should bring about change. The point was about the “helpless” attitude..

@Preeti: Agreed: “when we don’t stand up for what we really feel and think, there are always consequences.

@Kamal: “I think it is a clever ploy by the channel people to not take it upon themselves that they are suggesting in any way that they want to change things.” Possibly…Who would want to antagonise the powers that be?!

@Praveen: Yah galtiyaan/ khamiyaan nikalne ka prayaa nahin thaa..asha hai mere upar likhe spashtikaran se aap santusht hue honge..

@Nittin: “I dont expect Aamir Khan to start the show with saying – I am here to bring all the changes,”
Neither did I..but we need positive energy; a can-do attitude – that was what I was referring to..Hope this clarifies..
There’s no point in delving too much on the opening lines or facial expression of the host. He ultimately went on to meet the CM of Rajasthan and ultimately some firm steps were taken, all this within a week’s time. I don’t expect anything more than this out of a TV show.
    Agree..You have a point there..
And thanks for the very kind and encouraging words about the blog..and my efforts..Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!
