I have heard variations on this theme. One is that identity is not clear cut in the singular but that people assume different personalities in different contexts. This might best be described as emotional intelligence. In the context of religion, the ability of Christians to lead at the forefront of science and yet do so without any doubts about their faith. In the same way, Hindu theoretical physicists have remained attached to their Hindu religious beliefs.
We find this mostly in great creative writings. There is no need to quote: different characters in a novel are just different facets of the reality the writer wants to portray.
