Question of the Week: Where are the BJP’s poll strategists?

This post was triggered by two unrelated links I read last weekend.  The first: Is Sonia Above Questioning? by Sh Rajinder Puri from which this brief excerpt:

…The BJP has taken up the secret Indian Swiss bank money issue. Does it seriously contemplate recovering the money? Or is it just a poll gimmick?

…Are they political opportunists? Do they or don’t they really intend to deliver results on the Swiss money? If the BJP is serious about fighting corruption there is no dearth of issues. Take one glaring example.

On August 15, 2006 this scribe wrote: “Dr. Yevgeniya Albats is a Soviet journalist who …was appointed as member of the official KGB Commission set up by President Yeltsin in 1991…She authored a book, The State within a State: KGB and Its Hold on Russia …. Dr. Albats disclosed in her book that KGB chief Victor Chebrikov in December 1985 had sought in writing from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), ‘authorization to make payments in US dollars to the family members of Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, namely Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Ms Paola Maino, mother of Sonia Gandhi.’ CPSU payments were authorized by a resolution, CPSU/CC/No 11228/3 dated 20/12/1985; and endorsed by the USSR Council of Ministers in Directive No. 2633/Rs dated 20/12/1985. These payments had been coming since 1971, as payments received by Sonia Gandhi’s family, and ‘have been audited in CPSU/CC resolution No. 11187/22 OP dated 10/12/1984.

“In 1992 the media confronted the Russian government with the Albats disclosure. The Russian government confirmed the veracity of the disclosure…The Hindu of July 4, 1992 carried this report….In November 1991 the respected Swiss magazine, Schweitzer Illustrate, published a report alleging that Rajiv Gandhi had 2.5 billion Swiss francs, equivalent roughly to two billion US dollars, in numbered Swiss bank accounts….”

On November 8 2006 I again wrote: “…Until now there has been only deafening silence from Mrs. Gandhi and the Congress party….If the Albats allegation published in a reputed research book is false, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi should promptly deny it. Otherwise, her silence could be perceived as assent.”

The government remained silent. But so did all the opposition parties! Why? Are the opposition leaders themselves also vulnerable and compelled to maintain discreet silence? Draw your own conclusions.

BJP

The second was this news about Rahul Gandhi’s visit to a few villages in the wake of the tragedy at ..Apparently he also gave his mobile number to the villagers asking them to call him in case of any delays in compensation.

…While the media and his partymen waited for him at the Bhakti Dham Ashram here, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday participated in the funeral of 22 persons who died in the stampede on Thursday. He quietly reached the Manikpur Raj Ghat and met relatives of the victims. On his order, the party flags on the vehicles were taken off.
After visiting the ghat, he went to 10 villages, including Itwara, Mawai Kala, Peer Nagar, Matpur, Bidasi, Vijaipur, Tiwaripur, Dhobiayan, Kusemal, Khemaipur and Mangal Kache, to meet family members of the deceased.

…Rahul asked his party workers to note down the names and addresses of the victims and their relatives and ensure that the compensation announced by the PM reaches them without delay.

As I read these links, the one question that came to my mind was:

Where are the BJP’s poll strategists? Where are the leaders for 2014 and beyond?

A healthy democracy needs a healthy opposition. We seem to have neither…

In the meantime, Rahul Baba appears to be on track for 7, Race Course Road.

  1. Shantanu, firstly thanks for experts from Rajinder Puri’s article.
Few points that need to be noted:
    1. I an not questioning the credentials of Rajinger Puri – he has been a respected former member of the Jan Sangh, BJP and has been a know RSS sympathiser. RSS had always viewed Nehru and his family as their enimy number 1 because of the tough line he took on them post assination of Gandhiji.

    2. Rajinder Puri instead of questioning Sonia Gandhi to come clear, why does not not use the “so called well reputed research document” as a authentic proof and file a PIL or even an RTI? Does he not beleive the judiciary and also does he think RTI being a failure? Ratgher than ask questions, why dont you prove it to the world convincingly that Sonia Gandhi and her family have wronged the nation?

    3. All the talk about USSR and their payments and influence on Indian govt and political parties are even now beign labbeled, but with US (Advani’s comment on why India and Pak engaged with talks – his reasoning was due to US pressure). There is a lot of accusations, why is it till date now one has been able to convincingly prove rather than attack through the media and be arm chair critics?

    4. Opposition parties are never the ones to loose an opportunity to put the govt in a spot of bother!!! The reason they have not bothered to do anythign about it is of can be inferred as ” there is no truth in it other than mere accusation”
If you can remember the famous words of VP Singh during 1989 – 1991 who said he had account number of Rajiv Gandhi’s swiss bank account. He later retracked it saying they were political stunts to defeat an oppoenent in politics. The same was the case with Arun Jaitley and Arun Shourie, who made their politics out of the Bofors scandal.

    5. Also it is important to note that between 1996 to 2004 and for a brief time 1989 – 1991 there was Non Congress coilations ruling India. Do you seriously think they did not have any info on what Rajinder Puri is talking about – then i am afraid it is a naive assumption !!!

Dont mistake me, like you i am interested in knowing the “real truth” not that of say Rajinder Puri or some one else literary/research work (research is based on either experimentation or on assumptions – i think this one is one one assumption rather than a fact finding experimental work).

  2. Indian says:

Rahul Gandhi visits poor, villages, and needy. Good deed, but what I am thinking is..What if India had no poverty and illiteracy … How Rahul Gandhi could or would have stand tall without this remote villages, poverty and illiteracy in India?

  3. B Shantanu says:

    @ Ashwin: A quick response…

I don’t think a PIL can be filed against a person for accepting money from a foreign source (which is what this is – in pure legal terms). RTI is only useful when certain information exists but is not being revealed. In this case the information is with the government in Russia, not necessariy India…(it may be with the Indian authorities too – in which case your point is valid)

Asking questions of our leaders is an example of democracy at work. I dont think that right could/should be denied.

As for “The reason they have not bothered to do anythign about it is of can be inferred as ” there is no truth in it other than mere accusation”” – or there are other skeltons in the cupboard – as Sh Puri has implied.

@ Indian: very interesting question…I was reminded of something else that I read today that I am reproducing below..This was posted by a fellow FTI colleague:

    ***

From Cafe Hayek, Donald J. Boudreaux in the context of one of his recent letters to LA Times…

“After reading this letter, my friend David Hart sent to me this welcome correction:

I think you describe only half the problem. There is a market for would-be saviour politicians and self-serving [politicians] like the Kennedy’s are only too willing to satisfy this need. The demand side is that there are millions of people who actively want such politicians to save them.

  4. @ Shantanu,

“Asking questions of our leaders is an example of democracy at work. I dont think that right could/should be denied”

I dont disagree with the above statement of yours, but sadly democracy has been misued and also not been utilised in an idealistic fashion in most democracies in the world. Ones question can be merely termed as an baseless accusation by the other. Also the credibility question of the one who is asking question can be put into test. Hence dont you think, it is also the fundemental tenant of a honest and a rightful citizen of india to plug any holes in this democracy. Rather than just asking for answeres, why dont one provide answers by highlighting the questions, this way it would be more pro-active enagegement of the society.

On the issue of PIL – i still beleive there are rounds for a case. The reason being accepting money from a foreign source by a political party or a head of a political party that to from a foreign organisation or party can be considered anti national and also can question the very nature of the dubious transaction with a foreign entity?

If if Rajinder Puri does think of other skeletons in the oppostion camp then why not he be a whistle blower given the proximity he has enjoyed with the top BJP, RSS and VHP leadership??
I strongly suspect this as mere rhetoric!!!

  5. Sid says:

Ashwin, I am taking the pain of responding to you first, although I am sure Shantanu would give you his response.
    1. Yes, it is very plausible that Puri is biased. But it is highly unlikely that Dr. Yevgeniya Albats was a member of RSS or had agendas when she wrote her book.

    2. Read the 10-th para of Puri’s article.

    3. There were proofs in the from of Dr. Albat’s books or Mitrokhin Archives. If the Indian media fails to take a cue on these points and does not initiate an investigative journalism, that would not be the mistake of the blogger. You can not expect a normal blogger to take a camera and find news when those who are supposed to find news would make themselves busy with licking the feet of powerful and writing hagiography.

    4. If VP and Arun Jaitley (I am not sure about the Shourie) failed to deliver on their promises, it does not mean that Gandhi family is not above the suspicion. What did left do besides making a lot of noises about bofors during early nineties? Even Mr. Vajpayee needs to answer the reasons he felt compelled to bail out Rahul baba when the prince charming got arrested in Boston. From the point I am seeing, this is misuse of power of the prime minister’s office.

    5. See my above points. Delhi circle is filled with dynastic elites. Regardless of the party/ideology, they would continue to bail each other out until someone who is radically committed is promoted by people. But that would require a complete evolution of democracy in this country, not an incremental change.

  7. B Shantanu says:

@ Ashwin: I am not convinced by your arguments…but this debate is merely academic…There is no obvious way I can think of to get to the bottom of this.

Neither you nor I (nor indeed most readers of this blog) have the tine and the resources to do anything more than a bit of desk research (as mentioned by Sid too). PIL falls in a different league altogether…

@ Sid: Agree with your conclusion in point #5.

@ Bharat: Thanks …I will check out the link.

  8. @ Sid and Shantanu

I shall reply to your posts, once i am back to UK.
There are few things we can think about to find the truth.. will talk about it in the post.

  9. Indian says:

    @Sid

I too agree and liked your point#5.

  10. Khandu Patel says:

Rahul Gandhi represents the corrupt face of India because he fails to exercise the responsibiity that goes with his office by drawing on the special access that he has to those in positions of power. This is something the BJP even if it was comfortable with doing should not go on the bribe the people course which so characterises the Congress method. The example to follow is of John F Kennedy Jnr who helped the poor by establishing an oil heating company for them.

It is clear that for anyone to come to power, they have to show in the same way as JFK that they have the peoples heart in mind and not themselves.

  11. @ Sid,

You haev raised the very question of Integrity of certian class of political leaders in India who have a mass following. The beauty of democracy on one hand woudl wash away the sins committed by the political class?

Also i do not buy your argument that though the Delhi circle is full of dynastic elite that they woudl compromise and let go of the opportunity to politically knock out their opponents (political).
I do agree with you that on the personal level some political dynasties dont hold any grudge or would try to cover up for the other, but by and large according to me that is increasingly diminishing.

Hence my assertion, that on the issue of Bofors or illegal payments there is a lot fo talk and figment of imagniation that has been propogated to pursue ones political gains.

Even by going your argument, then why not hold the likes of Arun Jaitley and others responsible for not acting?? This is because the middle class of India (arm chair critics) runnign away from its fundemental duties,i woudl blame the make up of the society rather than the politicians. Because politicians are part of the very society we live in, hence we cant be hypocritical!!!

    @ Shantanu,

I guess there are lot of people who shall do desk research and make assertions and take a view and opinion, but the society needs effiective leadership to tackle the very issues middle class of india wants answers for?

Like for example if the middle class is so concerned about the system beign looted by the politicans, why not make force their respetive MLAs or MPs to take up issues, else even go to the extent protesting for not taking up the cases? Unless there is proactive indulgence to set the system correct all the desk based research is futile!!!

I can cite my own example once when i had taken up the issue of the sporting community of Karnataka to get our dues from the state government. I am happy that the initiative i took has led to a robust sports policy in the areas of education into professional courses in Karnataka, as a result of which nearly 100 Engineerign seats and 40 medical seats are set aside at various institutions in Karnataka for sports persons who have represented India & State in various sports to get benefit of professional education!! I did all this when i was 16yr old!!! Though the struggle did not help me personally but i knew it would help others – but what i gained during the process was if we have the will to bring changes we can and we need to be pro-active in tacking the issues.
(forgive me for self praise here, it is not my intention!!!)

  12. Sid says:

    Ashwin,
I am questioning the integrity of the entire political class or politician-babu clan. The political elites would knock each other out if there is something at stake. What is the stake here? Nothing. What is easier – re-writing the rules of how administration conduct itself or play by the existing rule so that the wonderful shady world of corporate-beaurocratic nepotism would continue and people whether on the power or outside the power continue to benifit? The answer is obvious. I did not realize it until I saw NDA in action.

Dynastic politics is supported not because Burqa Futts of the Delhi based media belives that Mr. Singh’s Madam is bapu’s beti. It is supported because a dynasty at the top usually prefers to deal with other dynasties in the middle. Therefore other dynasties know that their position is secured when dynasty at the top is secured. There is no scope of a barbarian (so to speak) entering the sacred temple and destroy the status quo in the name of people or ideology.

The very idea of democracy is that it seeks to destroy such symbiosis. This dynasty has already destroyed democracy. What remains is the facade of receiving people’s mandate. People’s mandate is the only hope to disturb the status quo and provide anti-biotics to the dying democracy. I do not know this would happen but Buddha said that everything that has a beginning has an end.
“..but by and large according to me that is increasingly diminishing.” – How so, sir? How is it happening? What is the catalyst?
“i woudl blame the make up of the society rather than the politicians. ” – why blame the middle class alone? What about upper classes, intellectuals, chattering classes and poor who sell their votes for free liquor and rice? People deserve the government they get. We are part of the same people. That does not mean that we would stop raising questions. Just because I am a rightist, I can not avoid questioning the motives of a rightist government when it does something deplorable in the name of political convenience. Strange as it may appear, but political loyalty appears to be a serious road block against loyalty for the country.

  13. @ Sid,

I am more optimistic that you are on the political system in the country.

I am not ready to put the blame on th epolitical class here, the reason being they are a part of the society we live in and if youa re questioning their integrity, there is a direct relation to question our own integtrity towards the country and the system.

Setting aside, i can show many examples of political dynasties working over time to decimate their rival political dynasties – this is a stark fact one needs to know about politics. The idea of beign in powert for ever and not being challanged would make political dynasties and parties to run down the other or even push their political opponents to almost becomming political irrelevance.

The reason i blame the middle class is due to the reason they are ineffective in makign their votes count and deep down within the middle class there does not seem to be a sense of need to bring the relevant changes to clense the system. As for the other classes you mentioned they are merely exploiting the situation and they are un ashamed in saying so. Whereas the middle class sulks at the very sight if things dotn go their way and at times assume they are the ones who are sinned!!! But the reality as they are not making themselves accountable. Political parties talk about vote banks such as OBCs, Dalits, Thakurs, Muslims, Marwaris and others…middle class sadly is divided very thin into all the vote banks, though they are a strage species of people who are understadn the system well, but think only about their personal benefits as opposed to that afftectign their entire class (where as the upper caste and lower class are a well knit unit and work for each other).
Anyways i have digressed from the topic here….

Mate just merely questioning is not goign to be suffice, beleive in your questioning and suggest solutions to it rather than askign govt to think your solution.!!! What use is it by merely questioning?

  14. Sid says:

    @Ashwin,
“I am not ready to put the blame on the political class here” – Why? Just because they are part of the same society? What is the difference between Manmohan Singh and Shiny Ahuja? Both are part of the same society, are they same? What is the difference between Lalu Prasad Yadav and Karunanidhi? They are part of the same society. Why would I choose politician X over commoner Y to run this country? Only when X promises change, not just change, the change that benefits the majority. If you are elected, one would expect better judgement and senses from you. The scale against which a politician can be compared with must be few steps above the scale for a commoner. Our culture and our epics put that expectation into us when we see that Lord Rama sacrificing his devoted wife instead of questioning his uncharitable subjects.
Every now and then we compare with America. Americans may have get married thrice in life (average estimate) but they tolerate no extra-marital affair by their senators and governors, people of power loose their job over scandals there.
“i can show many examples of political dynasties working over time to decimate their rival political dynasties” – Only when there is a rival dynasty. I would be less frustrated if there is a rival (dynastic or non-dynastic). But that is not the case. When one dynasty supports another, it is a question of how much you can loot from the treasury. Nobody has any incentive to disturb the status quo. There is a monpolisation of power by a clan of dynasties – established or budding. If you do not agree, show me a rival and we can talk.
“The reason i blame the middle class is due to the reason …” – Middle class does not run this country. The class that you are talking about came into prominence only during last two decades. Most of this new middle class come from a poor background (including me) and only now we have began to understand the troubled root of this democracy. It took us a lot of time before we could find a voice, but, boy, we did (and contrary to popular claim, that is not just in the internet). As more and more people elevate themselves from the other various classes/segments/castes, (vote bank or no vote bank) other groups would shrink slowly leaving the Arabian cult of death and jihad possibly only dependable vote bank. Eventually the middle class would find it’s leader (neither Sonia Maino nor Lal Krishna Advani is that leader) who can find their pulse. Old loyalist guards (like Pranav Mukherjee) have no idea about the aspirations of this class.

“(where as the upper caste and lower class are a well knit unit and work for each other).” – Are we talking about caste or class? They are completely different (going by the usually accepted socio-economic yardstick of class divisions).
“Mate just merely questioning is not goign to be suffice, beleive in your questioning and suggest solutions to it rather than askign govt to think your solution.” – I already did. Look at my first post, point 5. There is lot to be done. This is going to be painful and slow but if we want to live a better India to our children there is no other way.

  15. @ Sid,

If you are so much against the current political set up then why did you and fellow thinkers not campaign, and eventually elect someone who could deliver the change rather than giving lip service. There is nothign wrong in india democracy, rather the wrong is in the society especially the middle class who aspire for the change but do lliottle when it matters most to bring change!!!
I am not saying questioning is wrong, but just urging to be more pro-active than by posign questions in media/blogs etc, rather i would apperciate if those who question also propose a solution and wrok towards bringing the relevant change.

Middle class of india has never lost its voice. It was the middle class voice which brought the RSS backed BJP’s Vajpayee govt on the back of Lord Ram. It was the very same middle class in major metros who helped bring Congress back to power this time around.
So in my view middle class never lost its voice, but when it mattered most to take a view on accountability and future – they spread themselves thin rather than stickign together as a unit. Hence my friend mere questioning does not help much, get our thinking cap on and take your own further step in briging the change, champion it till there is an effective leadership with the change movement who can eventually lead the new India and the society.

  16. Sid says:

    @Ashwin,
    1. “If you are so much against … giving lip service.” – Good ones. I actually vote but I can not elect. I hope that you know the difference between voting someone and electing someone (electing being the term as applicable in parliamentary democracy). But I promise that our thinking would achieve a critical mass sooner or later.

    2. “There is nothign wrong in india democracy..” – Ahha, new information. Please write a certificate for Indian democracy in your blog !!! Because the ailing patient need some certificate instead of medicines.

    3. “..rather i would apperciate if those who question also propose a solution and wrok towards bringing the relevant change.” – That is a lot of talk from the gentleman who has so far avoided answering all my questions.

    4. “..on the back of Lord Ram” – I find this extremely offensive. Lord Ram is not a carrier of a political party. BJP has long forgotten that it was the party of difference. One five year long government has corrupted it so much.

    5. “….champion it till there is an effective leadership with the change movement who can eventually lead the new India and the society.” – Nice words. After considering this with the quote at point 2, I am at a loss of finding the logical connection between these two opinions. So if there is nothing wrong with Indian democracy why would anybody need a “change movement”?

    6. Lastly, I went through your blog. Recently coward Singvi lamented in his blog that Congress has so less amount of support in blogosphere. I guess there is an upward trend of correcting that supposedly unfortunate accident.

An unwanted piece of advise: get a spell checker, will you?

“I am not unmindful of the tragedy which has forced me to take up my pen against one of the foremost names in India’s fight for freedom. It is true that I have never been an admirer of Jawaharlal Nehru. It was as a teenager that I heard him shouting like an ordinary street bully and slapping a Congressman on the public stage simply because the mike had failed for a few minutes. I also saw him kicking and slapping our common people who had travelled long distances to have his darshan and touch his feet. I had sensed in him that snobbery which is so characteristic of our upstart “upper” classes and against which I have been in total revolt all my life. His admirers call him an aristocrat who has a right to be short-tempered and rude. For me, it is simply an absence of any culture, inherited or acquired”

  19. Indian says:

And the irony is; we celebrate Chacha Nehru as children’s day!

  20. Sid says:

    Indian,
There is no irony. He treated Indians like children and then regarded himself as benevolent parent although given the history all I can find is an abusive, short-tempered, womanizing, naive ideologue who should have gone through a basic course of parenting before attempting the responsibility. Did you ever see children coming from abusive households? They are either damn violent or too meek to speak for themselves. Look at India.

Maybe The “atheist” god was not “atheist” himself.

    Read Shri. K.N.Rao’s article http://www.journalofastrology.com/archives/Nehru_and_Astrology.htm
“It has suited those who have taken shelter behind the massive frame of dead Jawaharlal Nehru to cite him as an instance of an anti-astrology and “progressive” symbol, rather a ‘modern’ man. The definition of “progressive” has had its vagaries from the Communists’ blind acceptance of whatever communist Russia approved till perestroika of 1989 destroyed USSR, to those who thought that the “liberty of the womb” is a modern and progressive step.”
“Nehru was a Kashmiri pandit, His uncle Bansidhar Nehru was an astrologer. His father Motilal Nehru depended on the court astrologer of the state of Khetri for the horoscopes of his family. Those horoscopes were used for all those important occasions when Hindus take astrological approval for their decisions, mainly marriage. It was on this ground, astrological basis, that Kamla Nehru, the non-English knowing Kashmiri beauty from Sitaram Bazar. Delhi, was chosen for the European Jawaharlal Nehru who never went to an Indian school in India and had no Indian classmates. …”
” It was the year 1983 and an astrological conference at Bangalore where in a major paper of mine containing tabulated predictions, given in advance, the prefatory remarks were Letter No.74 From Jawaharlal Nehru-Ahmadnagar Fort To Krishna Hutheesing-20 Carmichael Road, Bombay 29.8.1944

” In my letter to Indu I suggested to her to ask you to get a proper horoscope made by competent person. Such permanent record of the date and the time of birth are desirable. As for the time, I suppose the proper solar time should be mentioned and not the artificial time which is being used outside now. War time is at least an hour ahead of the normal time” (Nehru’s letters to his sister-edited with an introduction by Krishna Hutheesing-Faber and Faber,24 Russel Square, London. I then added the following comment.”Surprisingly this portion has been omitted by the editor of the letters of Pandit Nehru published by the Publications Division of Government of India, perhaps in his over anxiety to preserve the “secular” image of Pandit Nehru. The editor exercised his selective judgment in a way as will distort some facets of the personality of Nehru”

The battle had begun between the “progressive and secular” writers of Indian history and astrologers with this paper of mine. The salutary effect of this was that when Volume 13 of Nehru’s letters were published, the following letter to Indira Gandhi contained the following additional information.

“Betty no doubt will take necessary steps to have a ‘Janmapatri” ( Hindi) made. This should be done for that is our traditional way to record the exact date and time of birth, the date according to Samvat Calendar, as far as I can make it out is Bhadrapad 2—Samvat 2001, or put it differently second day of the bright half of the Moon in the month of Bhadra Samvat 2001. Betty writes time of birth was 8.11 a.m. But what time? The time observed now is war time which is at least one hour ahead of normal time, possibly more. The only point i would like to make is that Mr.Rajinder Puri has put his point more accurately than many of the commentators here. Those who say that he was a Former J.S. member should first prove that Puri is a partial man. Please research on the M.K.Gandhi assassintion case through better sources and you would find that RSS was completely exonerated in that case.It was also determined by the respective commissions set up by Nehru and Indira that even though godse was a critic of the RSS(And had abandoned the org. 15 years before he had committed the gruesome murder) he was not helped in anyway or provided any cooperation from the RSS in committing the heinous act.Godse is believed to have links with the Hindu Mahasbaha(And some of his Confederates where from Hindu Mahasabha, however Savarkar was acquitted) of that times which is not a part of the Sangh parivar.

This is in response to X’s question in comment #56 in this thread:

    @X,
Ok, I read the letter. So one ex-BJP activist is disgruntled. But as I asked you before, show me a single family ruling at the top. If the contents at your link is true, then there must be Advani’s relatives that would be ruling at the top. Show me those leaders who are Advani’s relatives and can suspend a leader of a state party at will or slap a cheif minister. If you can not, then stop the hyperbole. Your pain at the deity’s insult is too obvious, but also difficult to answer, is not it?

The set of factors that caused the 2002-2009 boom is exhausted. The NDA sowed, the UPA reaped. What has the UPA sowed?” Link
