I really must learn to control my anger…

…but sometimes it is just too hard.

From Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed released in Pakistan:

A Pakistani court on Tuesday freed outlawed Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed and his close aide Col (retired) Nazir Ahmed nearly six months after they were detained following the Mumbai terror attacks.

A three-member bench of the Lahore High Court freed Saeed and Ahmed after hearing arguments by the JuD chief’s counsel AK Dogar, who claimed the detention of the two men violated Pakistan’s constitution and laws.

…Saeed was put under house arrest on December 11 last year after the UN Security Council banned the Jamaat, declaring it a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is blamed by India for November 26 Mumbai terror attacks that killed over 160 people. Saeed was not present in the court today.

.

Meanwhile Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters

“…the development again showed Islamabad was not serious about bringing perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice.”

even as…

Pak blames India for Hafiz Saeed’s release

Pakistani Foreign Ministry sources have told CNN-IBN that they could not provide evidence in court because of what they called the non-cooperative attitude of the Indian government

Will we finally see some serious pressure being applied on Pakistan by the Indian government?

I am not holding my breath.

Bonus: This BBC headline reminded me of something else:

Pakistan releases ‘top militant’

A Pakistani court has ordered the release of the leader of an Islamic charity suspected of being a front for a group accused of the Mumbai attacks.
A court ruled there was no reason to hold Jamaat-ud-Dawa founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed under house arrest. …The UN added Mr Saeed to a terrorist watch list after the Mumbai attacks.

Somewhat related bit of news: Delhi stunned: UK & China stall move to blacklist Masood Azhar

…Barely seven months after the Mumbai attacks, Indian efforts in the United Nations to place sanctions on Jaish-e-Mohammad founder Maulana Masood Azhar have received a major setback. In a surprise move, the United Kingdom has joined hands with China to block the Indian request to proscribe both Azhar and Azam Cheema, the Lashkar-e-Toiba operative accused in the Mumbai train blasts, under the UN’s “Al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions” resolution (1267).

India had wanted these two along with Abdul Rehman Makki, another LeT ideologue, to be included in the list just like the Jamaat-ud-Dawa and its head Hafiz Mohammed Saeed were added along with other LeT operatives after the Mumbai attacks. The banning under UN resolution 1267 means freezing of assets, travel ban and embargo on arms.

What has stunned India is the UK’s position because the Jaish as an outfit is already banned by the UN and so it is only logical for Azhar to be put on that list. It’s learnt that London has asked for “fresh evidence” and “more details” while placing the request on a procedural hold. China has taken a similar position.

    Time to begin Forgetting Mumbai.

Honestly speaking, given the low voter turnout in the city of 26/11, I’m not sure if Mumbaikars are worried too much about the Mumbai attacks. By the time the day to vote arrived, it seems that the 26/11 attacks were already forgotten. This might sound rude, but this is also a fact. So, lets not blame Pak for everything (even though they are largely responsible) thats wrong in India.
Indians hold candle light vigils for justice to one model (Jessica Lal) but the 26/11 trials are already becoming a matter of joke. Is India serious about prosecuting the terrorists? Pak is in a much worse situation and I’m least surprised by these reports.

Folks- Would it be a good and a feasible idea to have a demonstration outslide the Paki consulate ?

    @Shantanu,
Please note that the same mainstream media does not complain about this blatant violation of human rights by the release of these terrorists. The same media which makes it a point to point at the accused in the Godhra and Kandhamal incidents being let off free. Incredible this hypocrisy is.
