Pardah hai Pardah…
I have heard this song numerous times before…but yesterday – for the first time – I wondered whether it will now fall foul of the “hurt sentiments” brigade.

MUMBAI: Activists of the MNS transport wing on Tuesday staged a protest against a song in the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Billu, forcing a theatre in Kurla to stop the screening of the film.
…It is not the first time that an objection is being raised against the song “marjani marjani” in the film.On the day of release, a group had protested outside G7 multiplexes. They apparebtly were not happy with the words, “rab ke hazoor mein kasmein bhi khaali, duniya ki aoni boni kasmein nibhadi’ which they believe, insults Prophet Mohammed.

Ah, again I would have slight disagreement. It is one thing to decry violence on account of hurt sentiments, and totally another thing to say that sentiments shouldn’t be hurt. Of course, this is not to support those who care only for Muslim sentiments…
Shantanu, I remember somewhere in 1994 there was some dud movie of Karishma Kapoor called Atish and there was some song called “Ya Mustafa” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpBVwTdoJRE) in it to which there was objection from “Only Minority Sentiments can be hurt” brigade and the usual Rudalis came out. The song was re-released with words “Ya Dilrooba”.
Somewhere in the same year another two movies of Karishma Kapoor came out with Govinda. They had songs in them with the word “Sexy” in it. One of ’em was “Meri Pant Bhi Sexy”. Because of overt use of word Sexy, for some odd reason there were protests and both the songs were changed. One of ’em to “Meri Pant Bhi Fancy”.
Now, Indian psyche has moved a long way. So it seems at least. It has become “Modern”. Word Sexy is no longer offensive, in fact now a days I see more sex in Indian movies than in Hollywood movies. Hey didn’t some Indian actress say “Sex sells”. No one came out with a decree on her unlike Sania Mirza and her “short” skirt which ruffled a few feathers.
But anyways, the point is while one broad section of Indians have moved “ahead”, looks like some of us are still stuck in 600 AD. Anti-Fellow Indians Bigot Raj Thackery is doing his part of Secular extremism to patronize such ideology.
@Shantanu,
Over the period of time, after watching a lot of Seinfeld(epitome of equal opportunity bashing of all cultures, sects, groups) I believe that each community should have a totem pole of grievances. In the case of Muslims, as per the Sachar report (my personal Bible 😉 ) the percentage of kids getting to primary education is far less than other major groups. As a non biased observer with no investment in Billu Barber or Billu, shouln’t the protesters first fight to get those uneducated kids in school? Or perhaps at least fight for getting those Slumdog kids a home? Where is Shabana Azmi the paragon of Muslim intelligentsia when this happens?
Dirt Digger, Shabana Azmi is more likely the paragon of Marxist/leftist intelligentsia. Anyone who manages to ruffle Bukhari’s feathers is not a paragon of Muslims – at least not the intelligent ones. 😉
(Which is not to say that she doesn’t indulge in pseudo-secularism).
@ froginthewell: Good to pick up that nuance…Indeed, it is the reaction to (or as a result of) hurt sentiments that is the problem rather than hurt sentiments themselves…

@ Satyabhashanam: Your comment reminds me of one step forward two steps backwards!

@ DD: “…shouln’t the protesters first fight to get those uneducated kids in school? Or perhaps at least fight for getting those Slumdog kids a home? Agree 100%.
That should be priority #1.

@ Kaffir: You, DD and others will find this post interesting: Shabana Azmi is right about one thing…
@Shantanu
I was pondering over this news later in the day also. The funny part is that if people start getting offended/associating with such far fetched imagination of “oh they must be talking about so and so” without any proof or logic then on those lines Hindus should thank this Indian Actor Shah Rukh Khan for unintentionally spreading the teachings of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta and other holy Shastr. In Geetaji God Shri Krishn said:
ममैवांशो जीवलोके जीवà¤à¥‚तः सनातनः।
मनःषषà¥à¤ ानीनà¥à¤¦à¥à¤°à¤¿à¤¯à¤¾à¤£à¤¿ पà¥à¤°à¤•à¥ƒà¤¤à¤¿à¤¸à¥à¤¥à¤¾à¤¨à¤¿ करà¥à¤·à¤¤à¤¿à¥¥à¥§à¥«- à¥à¥¥

In very short, He is saying that all living entities in this world are His eternal, fragmental parts. He is seated in everyone’s heart, and from Him comes remembrance and knowledge.
And what song did Shah Rukh Khan act on in one of his movie? “Tujh mein Rab dikhta hai” i.e. which I think means I see God in you. Good for him that these fanatics haven’t read Geetaji otherwise there would have been a fatwa on his head also for associating with his fellow Indians who are proud Idol Worshipers. Just like Salman Khan got one for participating in Shri Ganesh Mahotsav.

Song- Parde me rahne do (Shikaar 1968 ) Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Hasrat Jaipuri, MD- Shankar Jaikishan
parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
pardaa jo uth gayaa to bhed khul jaayegaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
pardaa jo uth gayaa to bhed khul jaayegaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
mere parde mein laakh jalwe hain
kaise mujhse nazar milaaoge
jab zaraa bhi naqaab uthaaungi
jab zaraa bhi naqaab uthaaungi
yaad rakhanaa ke
yaad rakhanaa ke, jal hi jaaoge
haan to parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
pardaa jo uth gayaa to bhed khul jaayegaa
ui ui allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
husn jab benaqaab hotaa hai
wo samaan laajawaab hotaa hai
khud ko khud ki khabar nahin rahti
khud ko khud ki khabar nahin rahti
hosh waalaa bhi
hosh waalaa bhi, hosh khotaa hai
haan to parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
pardaa jo uth gayaa to bhed khul jaayegaa
ui allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
haay jisne mujhe banaayaa hai,
wo bhi mujhko samajh na paayaa hai
mujhko sajde kiye hain insaan ne
mujhko sajde kiye hain insaan ne
in farishton ne
in farishton ne, sar jhukaayaa hai
haan to parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
parde mein rahne do, pardaa na uthaao
pardaa jo uth gayaa to bhed khul jaayegaa
ui allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
ui ui ui allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
allaah meri taubaa, allaah meri taubaa
