Democracy is rule of majority, ergo rule of idiots – Dirt Digger, circa 2009 AD.
Hi Santanu,
I’m an MBA student at the ESC Paris. Before that I have done two master’s degree, one in International Relations from Science Po(France) and one in French literature from Banaras Hindu University. Apart from that I got an opportunity of teaching French at Delhi university as guest lecturer too.
Let me say that I’m passionate about political discussions, be it national or international. Though I’m doing management studies but I’m more into reading political writings.
I accidently found your writings on blog, and found them interesting. Why I say that, because I myself think most of times this way. I feel very strongly about Indian nationalism and poor developing world. I thanks to my being in France got to see what it means a strong democracy and a democratic mind set and a welfare state. I see how efficiently the French influence and sometimes determine the policy of their state, so all the political parties have to play a politics based on issues but our national polity has not still come out of petty cast and religion based issues.
But this time, the election results has brought some hope because the ruling party has got strong mandate allowing them to govern under less and less pressure unlike last time. At the same time I see a positive sign that regional parties seem to be getting sidelined which is good for a pan-Indian democracy. But at the same time, inner on-going tussle sounds worry some because I want a strong opposition at the centre to pose checks & balances to the government. So in my view the BJP must be united and play a constructive role in national politics defending national interests. I don’ t want a country of one billion to be governed by either only one party being guided by an elite family, nor do I want it to be ruled by a conglomeration of petty regional parties. I am skeptical if regional parties take centre stage then our national interests will be high jacked by regional interests, then it will give rise to parties like Shiv sena & MNS. And this will create a messy situation one can’t even think that it can permeate into other rich states asking for their self independence under the self-determination law.
So reading your articles made me feel good because I think and try to write of these issues quite frequently. I agree on the issue of youngsters joining politics too. As the Indian electorate is changing, this fashion will be the need of our time. It would have been better if I could join your group to hear you and thus to evolve my ideas.
God bless
