Terrorist Attack in Mumbai – Part II

Some observations, rather hurried..more to come later.

  • To the best of my knowledge, this was the first terrorist attack in recent times that involved hostages and a direct attack on the police
  • The targetting of high-profile hotels, attacks on iconic buildings and foreigners suggests that at least part of the intention was to damage India’s image abroad as a country open for business
  • There are reports suggesting that ATS’ preoccupation with the Malegaon blast investigation may have resulted in intelligence failure re. plans for this attack
  • As Ashutosh mentioned to me in an email, we may see another “Kandahar” unfolding
  • Going by death toll, this is by far the worst single-city terrorist attack in India’s history – although the attacks last month in Assam come close (in terms of sheer numbers)
  • Thankfully no one has yet mentioned the “Spirit of Mumbai

    Quote from The Telegraph (UK):

To have pictures of burning Taj Hotel broadcast around the world will have a deeper impact than even perhaps the terrorists intended, striking a blow against a symbol of Indian wealth and progress and sending shivers down the spine of some of the richest and most powerful people on the planet.

@ Patriot: Re. your earlier comment about this *not* being a homegrown operation…I hope so…Does it make it more tolerable? Not really…but it will give everyone one more chance of talking about the “foreign hand”

  2. Patriot says:

Does this make the attacks more tolerable? No, certainly not.

The context for the remarks was my initial astonishment and surprise at the number of AK-47s and ammunition and grenades that had been smuggled into the city. This is mumbai we are talking about, where I believe that the security levels are intense – probably higher than even Delhi – smuggling in bombs is easy, as you can mask them, but assault rifles are not so easy. So, that was shocking to me.

Now, that I learn that the attackers came by sea, I understand why Mumbai was vulnerable ….. coastal security has been more relaxed in recent years, after very high security in the 90’s.

Also, if it is not a home grown operation, a retaliation and resolution *may* be easier, if you know what I mean.

    @Shantanu:
“There are reports suggesting that ATS’ preoccupation with the Malegaon blast investigation may have resulted in intelligence failure re. plans for this attack”

I have not seen any such reports in any mainline newspapers or media …. what is the source of the above?

Also, please note that the Maharashtra ATS is a domestic counter-terrorism force, dealing with domestic intelligence. If the attacks were indeed by *external* forces, then the ATS would never have seen the relevant intelligence reports, if any, given the fragmented nature of the Indian intelligence services.

Until the situation becomes clearer, could we stop throwing mud on the brave officers of the ATS – if they are proven, later, to be guilty of incompetence, by all means hang them as high as you want.

  4. B Shantanu says:

@ Patriot: I would be the last person to throw mud at or demean, insult or in any way undermine the work that our security forces do (that includes the police, BSF, CRPF and of course the armed forces)…I have the highest regard for them…

I can never match the risks that they are exposed to – in the line of duty. I hope that clarifies.

Coming back to your question, this is what I recd in an email this morning. I have not been watching NDTV – so can someone pl. confirm?

Shri Srinivasan Jain told us this morning in the course of his news coverage that he met with the ATS chief karkare yesterday in the afternoon and that Karkare told him that 90% of the ATs had been preoccupied with the Malegaon blasts.

    More observations:

    1. PM’s statement on 22nd Nov:

“I only wish to emphasise here that time is not on our side…We cannot afford a repetition of the kind of terrorist attacks that have recently taken place in Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Guwahati and some other urban centres.” (need to find the link and verify)

    2. Cama Hospital – where there are still hostages (I believe), is a hospital for children/women. Disgusting really…reminded me of Beslan.

    3. All evidence so far suggests a highly coordinated, well planned operation. Not run of the mills bomb-int-the-backyard stuff.

    4. Speculation with possibly some grains of truth: Terrorists were in touch with Karachi via satphones

    5. From another forum, a tally of suspects/terrorists captured so far: One injured terrorist captured in Trident and being interrogated; 3-4 killed in Oberoi; 2 killed in Car (Skoda) and CD recovered; 1 reported killed in Nariman House; 9 suspects detained.

    6. Someone is waking up: Mumbai situation being dealt as ‘war-time emergency’

    7. Unverified: (from another forum)

The terrorist interviewed on India TV had a thick Pakistani Punjabi/Pathani accent. Using of plural for singular, high pitch tone, urdu words with Punjabi/Pathani type dialect etc. It is very typical and closest Indian equivalent is people from J&K but the language / features showed that they were not Indian or J&K

Excerpts from “Are our Nuclear Establishments safe?”

It is …an act of terrorism the like of which the world has not seen before. Mind boggles as one tries to think and figure out how the terrorists could have planned and carried out terrorist strikes of such magnitude, territorial spread and ferocity without our intelligence and police having been able to get any scent of it. Like what the Vietcong did during the Tet offensive

The iceberg of jihadi terrorism to which I have been drawing attention since November 2007, in article after article, in interview after interview, in discussion after discussion has struck not only Mumbai, but the Indian State.

The iceberg moved from UP to Jaipur. From Jaipur to Bangalore. From Bangalore to Ahmedabad and Surat. From there to Delhi. From Delhi to Assam. From Assam to Mumbai now — despite the claims made by the Mumbai police some weeks ago of having discovered and crushed a plot of the IM to carry out strikes in Mumbai.

The government of Manmohan Singh reacted to the repeated warning signals of the moving iceberg since November 2007, in the same way as the Bush Administration reacted to reports about the plans of the Al Qaeda for aviation terrorism in the US; in the same way Megawati Sukarnoputri reacted to reports of the activities of the Jemmah Islamiyah; and in the same way Khalida Zia reacted to reports of the plans of the Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen .

Bovine. It just did no react. It was in a total denial mode. I wrote and said again and again — hand over all the investigation about the IM to a central investigating agency for a co-ordinated investigation instead of their being investigated by the police in a piecemeal manner in different states ruled by different political parties. No reaction.

From a localised threat, jihadi terrorism has become a pan-Indian threat with a pan-Islamic ideology. Deal with it with a pan-Indian strategy, I said. No reaction.

The terrorists arrested some weeks ago in Mumbai, three of whom were IT experts well-placed in transnational companies, pose a new dimension of the threat. Seek the help of the US, I said. No reaction.

I drew attention to an article by Hamid Mir, journalist from Pakistan, which spoke of Indian Muslims going to Afghanistan to fight with the Taliban against the US and which also said that India is one of the routes being used by foreign jihadis going to Afghanistan. No reaction, just as Rajiv Gandhi did not react to repeated wake-up calls from the then Afghan President Najibullah that Muslims from Kashmir were being trained by the Afghan Mujahideen.

In October, when I had come to Delhi for a seminar, two diplomats from EU countries sought an appointment with me for a discussion on the IM. They expressed their surprise and concern over the fact that the Indian intelligence and police seemed to know so little about the IM despite their having arrested many perpetrators of the previous blasts and interrogated them.

Is the IM the name of an organisation or of a movement? Is it one or many organisations in different states acting, like the International Islamic Front of Osama bin Laden, as a united front — autonomously where they can and unitedly where they should? Who constitute its command and control? Where are they? In India or outside? Nobody knows for certain.

I could not sleep the whole of last night. One question which kept bothering me again and again was: how safe are our nuclear establishments and material?

Till now, we were greeting with glee Pakistan’s incompetence in dealing with terrorism. We can no longer do so. We have become as clueless as Pakistan.

I wanted to write much more, but my mind doesn’t work. As I watch on the TV what is happening in Mumbai, I shiver and sweat at the thought of what is waiting to happen tomorrow and where.

    ***
Extract from the IM September email:

In the email, the IM stated, “You ( the ATS) should know that your acts are not at all unnoticed; we are keeping an eye on you and just waiting for the right time to execute bloodshed. We are aware of your recent raids at Ansarnagar, Mograpada in Andheri and the harassment and trouble you created for the Muslims.”

“If your arrogance has reached this degree and if you think that you can scare us by your stunts, then let the IM warn the people of Mumbai that the ATS will be responsible for the deadly attacks on Mumbaikars in the future.”

From another forum and something that I fully endorse:

this is NOT the fault of the police, they did the very best they could, under the circumstances. The rot starts at the top of the GOI administration

    Some updates:

    1. Indian Navy allegedly chasing a ship that apparently dropped off the terrorists off the Mumbai coast. The dinghy in which they landed at Mazagaon dock is in custody

    2. One terrorist has allegedly been taken alive and well

    3. We were premature to call an end to the seige of the Taj, this morning. While the bulk of the activities ceased around 4:30am, the sanitisation of the hotel is not yet complete. Recent reports say that 4 out of 6 floors have been completely santised and there was a renewed gun battle just now on the 5th/6th floor

4.Multiple explosions reported from the Oberoi over the past hour – seems like the army commandos are mounting an assault. Senior police people have been saying “no negotiations with the terrorists, despite the hostages. The terrorists will be taken alive or dead”

    5. There has been incredible cooperation between diff forces on the ground – the ATS, RAF, Navy, Army and NSG commandos all seem to be working together, without their having been any battles for turf. The reaction time of the mumbai police to the initial firing reports were also extremely quick – this is what apparently led to terrorists holing themselves up in 3 locations, whereas they were roaming the streets of Colaba, Mumbai earlier, killing people indiscriminately. In fact, it seems the quick response of the ATS at the Metro Cinema is what caused the death of Hemant Karkare and Ashok Kamte – they did not have adequate firepower/barricades/reinforcements.

    6. Not much reported from the Cama Hospital, but terrorists still holed up inside.

  8. Patriot says:

    Some observations:

    1. The govt (federal) seems to have handed over tactical control of the situation to the army and navy western commands. Seems like this is to avoid a repeat of the Kandahar situation and a hostage situation. The word on the street is that “this is war, treat the situation as you would in an enemy attack”

    2. I accept your statements re: police forces, Shantanu. I have seen part of the interview with Hemant Karkare on 24×7, and no where does Hemant say that the ATS was spending 90% of its time on Malegaon. Of course, this was only an excerpt. But, hear this everyone: Hemant Karkare is not your typical policeman, who “beats out a confession that will not stand up in court” – he was widely respected as a very honourable, honest and intelligent officer, who incidentally spent a fair bit of time in RAW.

    3. If anyone sees Barkha Dutt, please slap her for me – 24×7 is the only channel that keeps harping about this being a hostage situation and that a “political decision is needed” … meaning, our govt should negotiate with the terrorists, I guess, and then capitulate.

    4. This particular operation seems too professional, too well funded, and completely different from previous attacks to be one solely done by existing terror groups, internal and external. The terrorists are carrying sophisticated assault weapons (not just AK-47s) which are usually carried by special forces, not even regular army troops. While this may be very early, but I am thinking ISI.

    5. I will take up your kind offer of a guest post, Shantanu, but later – right now, I am just so furious, that I may end up with a heart attack.

  9. B Shantanu says:

@ Patriot: Thanks for accepting to write the guest post…I am too full of bile right now to think coherently…

And yes, this has the hallmarks of a professional “operation”. Folks are talking about a combined plan hatched by LeT, D-Company and ISI.

  10. Patriot says:

    Update:

    1. Fresh huge explosion at Taj – NSG and army commandos have been sanitising the hotel rooms and floors

    2. NSG commandos getting ready to launch a full-fledged assault on Nariman house in Colaba, where some terrorists have been holed up along with some Israeli hostages.

    3. No fresh data available on the Oberoi

  11. Patriot says:

General R K Hooda, GoC Western Command, is leading the army operations – the army is leading all the 3 major operations now – Taj, Oberoi and Nariman House. Sufficient number of NSG commandos have now arrived and are leading the operations at each site.

The army is assaulting the Oberoi from outside – where certain rooms are being targetted, while NSG commandos are inside, working down from the roof, sanitising each floor as they go.

NSG commandos, with serious assault rifles, RPGs, and other interesting weapons have just entered Nariman house.

NSG commandos are also engaged in the Taj, where there was one large explosion and some small explosions over the past 30 mins.

One thing is clear – the army is completely in charge of operations, and there are no negotations with any entity in any of these sites.

No information available on Cama Hospital.

General R K Hooda, paraphrased “I can not give you a time estimate, how long this will last, I can not tell you how many terrorists are inside, how many residents are trapped inside. I *can* tell you that the operation is proceeding well, and we have the best forces in India dealing with this situation and there is no reason to panic”

The PM’s address to the nation made me feel completely peaceful, safe and secure. I am sure all of you feel the same.

…We will “restrict the entry of suspects into the country”.

I am extremely dim-witted and slow on the uptake. Now if I understand the PM he says he will restrict the entry of suspects into the country. Word for word these were the exact words. Now let us take it apart – we will restrict – who will restrict? immigration officers in airports? Ticket-checking personnel in railway stations? Toll-gate personnel? Who for heavens sakes?

Now suspects – how will these ppl know they are suspects unless of course ‘suspects’ pin the label on their shirts.

Restrict entry – we will not stop entry but restrict entry. Does this mean if we get 150 suspects in a day wearing their ‘suspect’ label, we will let in only 28 and turn the others away maybe to try tomorrow?

Lastly ‘we will restrict…” Does this mean until this happened the PM did not restrict entry of suspects?

And the next point – we will stop funds coming to ‘suspect’ organizations. again, ‘we will’. Does this mean he still hasnt done this yet?.

We will put in law, we will bring them to bpook, we will stop funds, we will strengthen the police….

All of this is ‘we will’. Which means they havent done this so far isnt it?

Is this the simple truth or does he have a lousy or blase speech writer?

This was not the PM speaking. This was a cluless individual who doesnt look as tho he is leading the nation or a man who is on top of the situation.

  16. Gypsy says:

What worries me the most is the information that more than 30 terrorists arrived in a boat at the Gateway of India with arsenal enough for an army platoon. As an ex-soldier, it appears to me that this was a commando raid, fully reconnoitered, planned and executed.

The Fourth Estate virtually worked as the Fifth Columnist organization. It gave second-to-second update of police operation to the terrorists. They saw on the 24/7 news channel (as I did) that the late Hemant Karkare was wearing an ill-fitting helmet, the ‘bullet-proof’ vest covered only the belly and exposed his chest and neck. It is precisely at the neck the terrorist took the aim and shot. Even as I am writing this, the very same media is telling the terrorists how many of their colleagues are killed and how many alive. They can easily plan their next move.

This shows a complete lack of responsibility on the part of the Indian TV channels, and to say the least, Indian intelligence, coast guards and civilians. I cannot believe that no civilian saw a score of heavily armed terrorists moving towards the Taj, the Oberoy and CST.

Statements of Patil (he shames the name ‘Shivraj’ he bears) and the PM are beyond belief and naive. What more can one say? It is a crying shame that such a thing could easily happen in a city like Mumbai.

And let there be fresh election in the next 3-4 months.

The civilised world must condemn your Jihadi-friendly Congress-UPA govt. We Indians are left with nothing but to die like streets dogs, by your govt in the last 4 plus years. Thousands of Bharatiya, mostly Hindus, killed by the Jihadis in the last 4 plus years, and thousands maimed. Last severe mass-klling occured less than a month back in Asom (30 Oct 2008).

You and your Congress-UPA govt faciliated, supported Jihadis by repealing anti-terror law, and never took actions to arrest and punish the culprits. You treating a jihadi terrorist Afzal Guru, who was given death penalty by the Supreme Court, as special guest.

To cover total, we mean total, failure of your govt, you created a Hindu terror boggy by framing sadhvis and armys, only to protect Jihadis and get their votes and hold on power.

Your Congress-UPA govt is responsible for this tragedy and other tragedies in the last 4 plus years, which killed thousands and maimed many thousands.

Meanwhile, I am reproducing a comment from George J on Bharat-Rakshak below:

I just received some first hand observations.

*There was media covering the VT and Cama Hospital attacks. All the attention (lights and cameras) was focused in that direction

    * Mr. Karkare comes there to assess the situation (remember this is like less than 30 mins from T0, and if you hear automatic fire in the city it is assumed it gang war, there is no precedence of a terror attack with automatic weapons in the city, that is why the Police Channels initially assumed its a Gang War)

    * When Mr. Karkare arrived ALL the cameras turned towards him and he was surrounded by mediawallahs.

    * The terrorist were watching all this happen and it does not take Lahori Logic to figure out that if the mediawallahs have turned their attention from them to someone else that person is important. So basically Mr. Karkare was a marked man from the time he had arrived.

    * Mr. Karkare was wearing a BPJ, it does not protect his NECK and it was specifically where they targeted and got him.

Now can you imagine the hulla the mediawallah would have made if the cop requested them to stop filming him, these are the same folks who are giving away sniper positions. How dare the police violate their fundamental right, its their god given right to report, who cares about security.

Will the media take responsibility for making Mr. Karkare a marked man? Hell no, his death makes a better story.

    Dear Indians,

In this hour when our country and our people have been hit by the ruthless terror attacks, I hope and pray that all your friends and family are safe. Lets salute the brave men in uniorm & the firefighters for standing up and supporting the common man at a time when our politicians hide for cover. It is our pride that has been hit and hit hard – a shocker but not completely out of the blue. I am sure each one of us knew how vulnerable our society is to such acts and what may be the repurcursions. It pains me immensely to be so far from my Motherland (some time ago I was betting my life on it) and watch these acts helplessly.

Each one of you copied on this mail takes immense pride in being an INDIAN. We must resolve to not let these moments cause hatred and animosity within our communities but only make our resolve to terminate such dastardly acts of radical terrorism. It is at moments like these that you feel the immense desire to fight back against these fanatics so as to let our peace loving country prosper and blossom. We still have a long way to go before we become a developed country given where we are. Our strength has always been unity in diversity and each one of us feels proud to have all the possible religions living together in harmony. Our Armed forces on land, air and sea are amongst the strongest globally. Despite all these good intentions & strengths we have always been let down by our lack of unanimity and political will. Where is the doubt in anyone’s mind about the origination of such acts (the name Deccan Mujahideen cannot hide their true origin) and what needs to be done to put an end to it – Yet, we seem to almost always fall short of giving an appropriate response.

Some of us – the NRIs are away from our country but our heart bleeds for it at this point and time. We feel bogged down due to our inablility to deliver an appropriate response. All said and done we still are the future of our young nation and must endaevour to put “Nation Before Self” at all times. We will all move up the corporate / government / political ladders in our life span and must always remember – wherever we reach, our Motherland’s interest must definitely be at the top of our minds – then and only then will we be able to put a united front and the world will see the power of 1 Billion united Indians standing together hand in hand. At this hour let us say a prayer (that I used to say daily at the National Defence Academy) and endaevour to follow it –

(For some the word Services below may not be appropriate)

O God, help us to keep ourselves physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight,
that in doing our duty to Thee and to our country we may keep the honour of the Services untarnished.

Strengthen us to guard our country from external aggression and internal disorders.
Awaken our admiration for honest dealing and clean thinking, and guide us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong.

Kindle our hearts with fellowship for our comrades at arms and with loyalty to the men we command.
Endow us with the courage which is born of the love of what is noble and which knows no compromise or retreat when truth and right are in peril.

Grant us new opportunities of service to Thee, to our country and to the men we lead, and ever help us to place such service before self.

    Jai Hind

  23. Bharat says:

Excerpts from India, like Israel, has to fight terror on its own by Barry Rubin

For years, India has been subjected to periodic terrorist attacks throughout the country. But what happened in Mumbai is something new and different: A full-scale terrorist war.

This is the kind of threat and problem Israel has been facing for decades. What are the lessons for India from Israel’s experience point also reflected by India’s own recent history?

First, India needs and has the right to expect international sympathy and help. It will get sympathy but will it get help? Once it is clear that other countries must actually do something, incur some costs, possibly take some risks, everything changes.

Finally, there is the dangerous “root cause” argument. Many Western intellectuals and journalists — as well as some Governments — are ready to blame the victim of terrorism. In Israel’s case, despite desperate efforts to promote peace, making of concessions, withdrawals from territory, and offer of a Palestinian state, it is said to be the villain as not giving the Palestinians enough.

…The terrorists and their sponsors use this situation to their advantage. By being intransigent — demanding so much and offering so little — they keep the conflict going and are able to pose as victims simultaneously.

The Indian Government is thus going to have some very tough decisions to make. How will it try to mobilise real international support, not just expressions of sympathy for the deaths and destruction? In what ways can it seek to destroy terrorist installations and deter their sponsors?

Israel’s experience offers some lessons: Depend on yourself, be willing to face unfair criticism to engage in self-defence, take counter-terrorism very seriously, mobilise your own citizens as an active warning system, and decide when and where to retaliate.

Defending yourself against terrorism is not easy. Unfortunately, even in an era of “war against terrorism” those truly willing to help in the battle are few and far between.

Is CNN and its “experts” even believable anymore? According to them, the Deccan mujahadin claimed responsibility so, of course, it can’t be them. The LeT has denied responsibility, so of course its them. We are expected to accept that terrorists were all foreigners able to come from Karachi to Mumbai on boats with weapons thru Indian waters and no one stopped them. And they were able to set up shop in the hotels and get a room from which to execute operations and no one noticed. We are expected to believe that they had no help from locals, but were able to pinpoint exact locations of bombs etc. Am I the only one who thinks this is a load of BS?!

“We are expected to accept that terrorists were all foreigners able to come from Karachi to Mumbai on boats with weapons thru Indian waters and no one stopped them. And they were able to set up shop in the hotels and get a room from which to execute operations and no one noticed.”

There are eye-witness accounts of the terrorists landing in Mumbai by sea. Fisherwomen saw the boat at Sassoon Dock (not Mazgaon, as i had said erroneously before) and the terrorists leaving with bags. One fisherwoman is said to have asked them who they were and why they had landed at a fishing port – the terrorists told them to mind her own business. In a spirit we should salute, she informed the local chowki and beat constables about the men. The police then secured the boat – although she says no one from the police has since spoken to her.

Eyewitnesses at NCPA (near the Oberoi) say that they saw two speed boats unload people near NCPA and then speed away from the scene. This is not fully collaborated.

Gen R K Hooda said that the terrorists’ conversation have been intercepted and they were speaking in Punjabi. To the best of my limited knowledge, no one in the deccan speaks in punjabi?

They have also found Pakistani SIM cards from the slain and captured terrorists.

Did the terrorist book a room at the Taj? Not clear at this point in time. Is it possible? Of course, it is. Why, do you think that ISI backed terrorists would lack for money? Or do you think all terrorists dress like Osama bin laden?

Have you even seen our western coastline and how many fishing trawlers operate out of the Arabian sea, off Konkan and Gujarat? I would be interested in knowing how you would expect the Coast Guard or the Navy to interdict one fishing trawler, among so many? I know the answer to this question, let me see if you know it?

Does that clarify the position in Mumbai, where our troops are fighting terrorists from across the border?

  31. B Shantanu says:

Good to know that your friend is safe.

The NSG commandos have done a stellar job. I am sure that if the army dealt with this situation like they would in enemy territory, the operation would have been completed in 1-2 hours. But, they rescued nearly all the hostages, from both hotels, which has taken time.

Here is a comment from the WSJ (not that we do not know all this already):

“….. the attacks are a reminder that India is at the top of the terror target list, the newspaper said this is because India is an easy target.

Not only are its intelligence units understaffed and lack resources, coordination among State police forces is also poor. “The country’s anti-terror legal architecture is also inadequate; there is no preventive detention law, and prosecutions can take years,” it said.”

Note the words “no preventive detention law”

All TV news channels have been blacked out in Mumbai.

There were reports of fresh firing at CST, which caused a fair bit of panic with people running helter-skelter. Since then, railway police and ATS have denied any fresh incident.

And, looks like they have shut TV down, as a result.

However, I can still see some streaming video of the same channels on the net.

  36. Patriot says:

Also, it looks like the police have cell phone jammers into operation across the island city.

So, do NOT panic if you can not reach your loved ones.

IBN quotes NSG saying “operations over at the Oberoi”

I can see a whole bunch of people coming out of the hotel.

  38. Patriot says:

It seems like the operation is getting over at Nariman House – TimesNow reports “NSG commandos are celebrating”. The wall of the 4th floor where the last terrorirsts were hiding has been blown away by the NSG.

Army brass have arrived at the location.

    *********************************************

BTW, I have been saying there has been no information on Cama Hospital for some time – talking to some “sources” and pieceing together various stories, this is what seems to have happened:

Two terrorists fired indiscriminately at the VT station and then left the station as the ATS arrived. They then went over to the Cama Hospital, where they went up to a “high floor”. The ATS seems to have arrived there after some gunfire in the hospital and surrounded the area.

The terrorists then apparently escaped somehow and commandeered a skoda car from the hospital. They were then shot dead by the Police at Gurgaon Chowpatty, at the main traffic lights.

  39. Patriot says:

BTW, if you have not heard this:

Zardari offered his full support to India (right).

In an unusual tough stance, the PM told him to send the head of ISI to Delhi, if he is really serious that these groups threaten both India and Pakistan.

The news currently is that the head of the ISI will come to Delhi to answer questions and look at our evidence. And, it seems like the head of the Pakistani Army, Gen Kiyani will also come.

I don’t know what to make of this, but the civillian pakistani govt is clearly worried about what India (more likely, the US) may do as a response to these attacks.

  40. Indian says:

…it is clear a multi-agency investigation on the biggest scale in indepedent India will have to be formed asap

    (a) gather all physical evidence from sites
    (b) trace id of terrorists
    (c) trace the physical logistics, money flows, who they worked with
    (d) take co-operation of interpol and foreign govts
    (e) center and states have to cooperate and stop their cat n mouse games
    (f) every agency has to pool inputs and forget about turf wars
    (g) dispatch “munich” style small teams to gulf and other places to kill or capture the main people (work with israel there, their people were also murdered)

some top people of exceptional ability and intelligence will have to lead this. PMO has to get out of comatose state and Pranabda probably chair this commission

“queensberry rules” or “what will happen to our gulf labour market” will need to be forgotten.

Check out Israel’s statement that the rescue efforts were badly planned. and check out the video of one of our brave commando’s firing randomly into the jewish center.

    Meanwhile,
“…The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) – the largest Muslim rights group in the US and Canada – while condemning the Mumbai terrorist attacks asked the Indian government to protect its citizens from the type of retaliatory attacks that have followed similar incidents in the past. ”

    😐

  46. K.Harapriya says:

Hats off to CAIR! At least muslims have organizations to speak up for them. Who speaks for the Hindus and the thousands of Hindu lives lost to Islamic terror. What really angers me is that this attack received so much coverage because foreigners died. When Indians only die, how much international coverage is there?

People utlimately get the kind of governance they fight for. In any other country, after so many terror attacks, the citizens would rioting on the streets in every city.

  47. B Shantanu says:

What was the extent of local support that the terrorists had?

    From The Telegraph:

“The dry fruits and some other logistical support came from the local contacts. Nine people have been detained from various parts of the city for questioning,” the police source added.

    A lot of Hard Questions:

…A police official said on condition of anonymity that the two Pakistani militants, arrested by Rajouri and Poonch police in a joint operation in Manjakote, had alleged that sea routes were used for infiltration for the first time “by paying bribes to coast guards”.

Abdul Majeed of Nawabshah and Mohammad Jameel of Mansera had reportedly revealed to the interrogators that they had infiltrated into Indian territory in groups of eight from Karachi through the sea route.

They claimed they had paid “huge amounts to coastguards to reach Mumbai after a private boat they were sailing in was intercepted by the guards in Indian waters”.

The official said: “The militants told us that they were sent from Karachi as a group of eight militants in a private boat by LeT’s ‘launching commander’. It took them three days to reach Mumbai. Their ship was intercepted by the Indian Coast Guard when it went out of order for sometime. However, the terrorist managed to cross the security net by paying a huge bribe.”

That was the first reported case of infiltration through the sea route over 20 months ago and senior police officials had “sounded more than adequate alarm about the potential of this spiralling into a bigger challenge”.

He added that information about gaps in the coastal security was passed to all relevant people in the central government “as it was the first case of infiltration through sea route after fencing of the Line of Control (LoC) had made it almost impregnable. It was a serious development and required a meaningful follow-up”.

    and more:

If the terrorists were Pakistani, how did they have such an intimate knowledge of the terrain? The two or three cowards who attacked the CST on Wednesday night made their way from the CST through a road on the left side of The Times of India building towards the Cama and Albess hospital/Azad Maidan police station, a route that is known only to true-blood Mumbaikars. Were they locals? Or did they conduct extensive reconnisance of the likely routes of escape?

These same two or three men, who are said to have commandeered ATS Chief Hemant Karkare’s police Qualis after shooting him, Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte and Inspector Vijay Salaskar, revealed similar familarity with the road outside the Esplanade Court, making an easy U-turn towards the Metro cinema junction rather than head on the road towards the CST. How did they know this if they were Pakistanis?

And finally “Shameful Quote of the Day“:

“This is not the time to do a post-mortem on the failure of intelligence, which must have been there.” – Sh Amar Singh

  48. B Shantanu says:

Excerpts from “Army of Muhammad is back

The Army of Muhammad is back. This was the message buzzing in radical Islamist circles yesterday as the world tried to absorb the shock of the terrorist attacks in Bombay, India’s economic capital.

While it is not yet clear which group was behind the attacks, it looks as if the perpetrators were trying to imitate the tactic of ghazwa, used by the Prophet against Meccan caravans in his decade-long campaign to seize control of the city.

The tactic consists of surprise no-holds-barred attacks simultaneously launched against a caravan or settlement with the aim of demoralising the enemy and hastening his capitulation.

The Bombay attacks differed from previous terror operations in India in a number of ways. In the past, one approach had been to place explosive-packed devices in crowded places with the aim of killing large numbers at random. Another was suicide attacks on specific targets by lone “volunteers for martyrdom”.

This time, however, the approach was “symphonic”, in the sense that it involved different types of operations blended together.

Involved in the operations were men who had placed explosives at selected points. But there were also gunmen operating in classic military style by seizing control of territory at symbolically significant locations along with hostages. Then there were militants prepared to kill, and be killed, in grenade attacks against security forces.

Whoever designed the operations had another important Islamic tactic in mind: tabarra or exoneration.

This consists of separating the “outsider”, in this case the British and American “infidel”, from the community with the intent of blaming them for the ills of the world before sacrificing them. It was no accident that one of the places attacked was a Jewish centre, where gunmen seized a rabbi and several members of the congregation as hostages.

The loud message was that a small group of individuals could turn a megalopolis of almost 15 million inhabitants into a battlefield for at least a day.

Terrorism is a beast with an extraordinary ability to mutate. As soon as its victims have learnt to cope with its methods, it develops new ones. Groups of anarchists throwing bombs follow the lone assassin who would target a king or a political leader. The hijacking of passenger jets is replaced by the transformation of aircraft into missiles against fixed targets.

…Although new to India, the tactic of “symphonic” attacks has been tried in a number of other countries in the past decade, notably Algeria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, at times with devastating effects.

Most recently, it was tried, on a smaller scale, by the Taliban in the Afghan city of Qala-Mussa. Theoretically, the tactic could be used in any city, from Bombay to New York, passing through London and Paris.

…The attacks came 48 hours after Pakistan’s new president, Asif Ali Zardari, practically threw away 50 years of Pakistani policy by announcing his readiness to end the dispute with India over Kashmir.

Zardari is an ethnic Baluch who, unlike previous Pakistani leaders who had Indian backgrounds, has no direct family history in pre-partition India. As a result, he is not as sensitive on Kashmir as his predecessors.

The Bombay attacks could be a message to Zardari that, though he may be uninterested in Kashmir, the issue is still central to many in Pakistan.

The new label used may also be significant. Deccan, a region in south-central India, was the intellectual and cultural capital of Indian Islam for centuries.

By using the term “Deccan Mujahedin”, the terrorists may be trying to pass two messages. First, that the Islamist movement is no longer interested only in Kashmir but intends to strive for the reconquest of the whole of India for Islam.

This runs in line with the new pan-Islamist thinking that propagates the will to recover all lands once ruled by Muslims – from India to Spain and southern France, passing by Siberia, parts of Russia and the Balkans. “Deccan” designates a movement that has universal aspirations precisely because it claims local roots.

The designation is also intended to show that India now has a home-grown Islamist terror movement.

This started to form more than a decade ago after Hindu nationalists won power in New Delhi through the BJP and its radical anti-Muslim allies. The Islamist terror movement has adopted what is known as the Matryoshka method, after the Russian dolls nested one into another. The outer and bigger doll in this case is the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (Simi), which claims millions of members.

Indian authorities call Simi an antechamber of terrorism. Within it are nested other dolls in the form of cultural associations, charities and political lobby groups. The smallest and deadliest doll represents the kind of groups that may have been behind these attacks.

…In jihadist circles, the new Indian economic boom is often described as the “House of the Spider”, a reference to a sura of the same name in the Koran, Islam’s holy book. On Wednesday, the attackers may have wished to show the flimsy nature of the “House of the Spider” by attacking Bombay, the engine of India’s economic transformation.

However, if that was the intention, the terrorists are likely to be disappointed.

As always, the terrorists may end up like the man who, having won a great many tokens at the roulette table, is surprised when the casino tells him his winnings cannot be cashed.

Amir Taheri is author of ‘Holy Terror: Inside the World of Islamic Terrorism’. His new book, ‘The Persian Night’, will be published next month.

    Full article here.

and a comment by Swaminathan on the article:

Quite an interesting article. Contains a great deal of Islamic insights we are not quite familiar with. India is not a soft target as everyone calls it, it is a WILLING target, providing conducive environment, benign indifference, and unremitting support from human right activists to terrorists, particularly of the Islamic hue.

Mumbai incident has gained importance only because foreigners are involved and hence the Government’s unusual attention. Believe me, this will happen with sickening regularity, PM and HM will condemn the ‘dastardly act’, exhort maintenance of communal harmony, and then everything will be back to normal till yet another terror strike. This is the only non-Islamic country in the world where politicians canvass votes carrying a placard of Osama bin Laden and where a State Assembly passes a resolution for the immediate release of an arrested Muslim terrorist in a neighbouring state.

    Excerpts:

Patriotism does not mean silence on the sins of commission and omission of the government. Unless we have the courage to admit our deficiencies and correct them, our counter-terrorism machinery is unlikely to improve.
    B. Raman

The Government of Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh and his Congress (I) are back to their denial and cover-up mode. They play down the possibility of the involvement of Al Qaeda despite tell-tale signs of an Al Qaeda stamp on the strikes. They continue to maintain a silence on the role of sections of the Indian Muslims lest any open projection of this cost them Muslim votes.

The Prime Minister has been unwise in reportedly suggesting a visit to India by Lt.Gen.Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the Director-General of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), for discussions on the Mumbai blasts. One fails to understand what useful results will come out of it.

In my view, the terrorist strikes in Mumbai had the stamp of Al Qaeda in the way they were conceived, planned and executed.

The stamp of Al Qaeda is evident in the selection of targets. The Taj Hotel, old and new, the Oberoi-Trident Hotel and the Narriman House were the strategic focus of the terrorist operation.

A few insights which I havent seen on this blog yet

    Intelligence:

18th November intelligence shared with Maharashtra government about possible attack from the sea route ( US Intelligence)..could it be that the security agencies are fully stretched to look beyond the law and order situation?

2 days prior to this act Karkare himself advised 5 leading hotels in mumbai about an iminent attack and asking them to beef up security

    Overwhelming scenes:

You had to see it to believe it- after the Nariman House operations there were scores of people out on the streets to see the commandos and congratulate them for their bravery-they were shouting slogans and literally falling on top of each other to touch them-thought this only happened to cricketers and filmstars!

“Humare liye kuch bhi mushkil nahin hai”-one of the commandos post the Taj operations-they are not allowed to speak to the media but once line said it all. To the person in the blog who said that Israelis could have dealth with the situation better-these commandos were pressed into action in the middle of the night in their sleep and into battle ground which they new nothing about, no layouts-dont know who the enemy was, how many of them they were, etc. To complicate things these are huge hotels with hundreds of rooms and guests stuck inside so by no stretch of imagination it could have been 1-2 hour job unless you actually wanted to end up with a huge casualty (perhaps even bigger than what the terrorists were targetting). ALSO- the terrorists new more than the security forces since they had full plan of the hotel and moved around like backstreets of karachi or wherever they were from..they had blackberries, sat phones, had been lodging in TAj with explosives, complete recee of the city a few months ago, etc-anyone thinking this was a IM kind of job -throw some water on your face and wake up. if you have some time go through the media briefing of the NSG post the operations

ALL THOUGH IT WAS NICE TO SEE THE PASSION OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC SADLY THOUGH IT WOULD BE FORGOTTEN BY THE END OF THE WEEK..

AND Pakistan has already backtracked on its promise to send the head of ISI to India (not that it would have made any difference because all he would have done is to refute any evidence which was going to be presented to him)

Does it scare you to believe that a group of no more than 10 people had the city -in fact the whole nation-on high alert…HOW have we become such a soft target?

  59. vinay says:

I wonder if live coverage news channels are helping matters or messing up. We will never know if we helped terrorists with our constant stream of information regarding number/type of force deployed, sniper positions..etc. With all due regards for deceased Police, would they have acted differently if only they were not on live TV? Restricting Media seems to be more like policy of a dictator but Freedom comes with responsibility. And when we do not see that kind of responsibility for their actions from Media, is it such a bad idea to restrict their live coverage.

    Shantanu

The tragic happenings over the last few days were very disturbing. I have read all comments
in the blog and feel as every other Indian. The following day after the attacks was amazed to
read in the TimesOfIndia that the government is considering the Indian Police request for better equipment, which was in discussions for over a year. If, I am not wrong, we had the inferior equipment while fighting at the high altitudes during the Kargil war.

The Marine Commando Commander during his TV interview, mentioned that the Taj operation was taking time as there
was blackout and there was poor visibility.I would imagine American/British/Israel commandos may have had Night Vision
equipment to assist in such conditions.

The question is, why can’t our brave soldiers/police personnel/Security teams have the same equipment that the US/British Soldiers use. Even the local police in US are padded with bulletproof vests.

I can imagine, that US/UK/Israel have huge budgets for defense spending, while our country may have other priorities. If its raising funds then can the Citizens of the country not contribute for this cause. In additions to the citizens the following industries/boards can do a lot.

    a. 20-20 Series (Domestic) by BCCI for Defense Fund.
    b. Bollywood stars doing Worldwide concerts for Defense Fund.
    c. Big Industries like Tata, Birla, Reliance contributing for Defense fund.

In my desperation, I posted a comment on Mr.Bachchans blog and I am waiting for a response. Can this ever happen. Don’t know?

  63. Patriot says:

Some points re: what happened in Mumbai, as seen from Mumbai:

    1. The terrorists were trained nearly to the level of special forces – some were carrying weapons, that only special forces of the world carry, not even regular troops. Clearly, there was an institutional backing to this force that attacked Mumbai – let us not lose our focus on that, as we have seem to done, in the 10 years post-Kargill.

    2. Local student IDs have been recovered, and it is alleged that some of the group (not the ones who landed on 26/11) were staying in Mumbai for some time. Some residences seem to have been pinpointed. Strong parallels to the 9/11 attacks in the US. Hence, al-qaeda involvement is suspected.

    3. Mumbai owes a big debt to the local police officers and men – both ATS and Crime Branch. They responded in force within 20 minutes of the initial attacks being reported. I believe that the carnage would have been far, far worse without the quick reaction of the Mumbai police. It seems like the terrorists were forced to hole up in their 3 locations far more quickly than they planned, due to the police action.

The Mumbai police suffered heavy casualties because they did not know the nature of the enemy forces they were fighting, and they waded into the battle without adequate firepower, defences or people. This is probably why Hemant Karkare, Vijay Salaskar and Ashok Kamte died in the same battle, at nearly the same time. They were leading their men from the front.

    4. I believe that the Israelis were speaking without adequate knowledge – so, we should just ignore their previous comments. If you notice, there have been no more such comments. Some post-mortem reports indicate that many of the hostages were killed immediately after they were taken hostage. Also, the local press is reporting that the Rabbi and his wife were *tortured to death*, in Nariman House. So, our commandos would not have been able to save them.

    5. Please salute the brave staff of the Taj and the Oberoi, who saved many people. There have been reports that they brought many people to safety, before returning repeatedly to the hotel. Service, above and beyond the call of duty.

    6. The people of Mumbai will be forever in the debt of the NSG and Navy commandos. We will never forget their bravery and their actions. They saved Mumbai and India from possibly the worst potential carnage in its independent history.

    7. I would like to say one thing to the people of India, on behalf of the Mumbai Police – if there have been local supporters and local logistics, as it seems likely, the Mumbai police will hunt every single one down to its logical conclusion. No perpetrator, no matter what favour he can call on, will escape. No previous loyalties or alignments will matter in this hunt. I have seen this once before, after 1993, and I expect the response this time to be even more robust. However, this will not happen in a day, or a month, or may be, even in a year. But, rest assured, we will not forget. Or forgive.

Sorry for being not been able reply on the blog when something disasterous is happening to आमची मुंबई. Myself and our members were busy for past three days at Some of the South Mumbai hospitals trying to offer our best help to the victims and the deads family.

It really hurts when bloggers on this blog like i have read two post of a)Indian b)K. Harapriya accusing Raj Thackeray where is he hiding and NSG came to rescue mumbai which contained north Indians n south Indians etc etc.

Thank you very much even though not being a politician you have very well politicised the issue.

I read in one of the Basu’s A.k.a Patriot post about myself havent yet commented on “war on Mumbai” and i was right not to comment. That exact thinking of mine of not to comment on the blog or in press media has gone through all the political leaders of Maharashtra including Raj thackeray… since
a)everyone of us (marathi politicians) new just by condemning again n again n again in the press and blog is not going to help anymore.. none wanted any political gimmicks
b)None of us visited the martyrs and deads home for political brownies as we felt ashamed and responsible , yes but we took part in their public funeral as a comman man.

I was shocked to read an article in a newspaper about some sms’s being circulated about NSG commandos who were north indian coming to save marathi and mumbai!…and where is raj thackeray and his marathi gang.

Pakistani’s are attacking mumbai, and Mark my words We are not attacked by A terrorist we are attacked by a TERRORIST NATION called PAKISTAN Our borders are being invaded and our land and people are taken hostage for 60hrs by other nation, and you people and bloggers mentioned above are talking about north Indian NSG’s and marathi gang.

Now take a look in the mirror mr.bloggers, you are the worst regionalist promotors in an on going national crises… by branding NSG as a force of north Indians

DO NOT PLAY POLITICS OF MIXING TWO EMOTIONAL ISSUES i.e. NATIONALISM AND MARATHI. ALL MARATHIS ARE TRUE NATIONALIST AS ANY other community,

WE(Marathi Politicians) HAVE MAINTAINED SILENCE OF SPEECH WE DONT WANT TO VENT IT OUT ON JUST COMMENTING IN MEDIA BUT WE WILL CHANNEL THAT ANGER FOR A STRONGER AND SAFE MUMBAI,A GREATER MAHARASHTRA AND A MIGHTY NATION.

I CHANNELLED my ANGER by being present and helping at the hospital OPD’s and morgues for last three days so did many of the marathi politicians including Raj and his party workers.
WE WERE PRESENT WERE WE WERE NEEDED THE MOST i.e. on GROUND AT HOSPITALS and not on TV CAMERAS AT GROUND ZERO

The biggest worry most of us would have is about the memory of this attack fading away and other sensational “stories” taking its place.

HENCE, I THINK IT IS IMPERATIVE NOW THAT HUGE POSTERS AND HOARDINGS OF PHOTOS OF THE ATROCITIES AS WELL AS THAT OF THE VERY HIGHLY RESPECTED MARTYRS BE PLACED ACROSS THE MUMBAI CITY FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS AT LEAST. SUCH POSTERS MUST REPLACE THOSE OF THE CORRUPT AND IMPOTENT LEADERS. THE POSTERS COULD BE REFRESHED EVERY SO OFTEN SO THAT PEOPLE DO NOT GET USED TO SEEING THE SAME POSTERS.

I WONDER WHO WOULD BE ABLE TO DO THIS.

And this was the right time to remind someone about what Nation is and how it works. I never mentioned your name also anywhere in my comments. I just took the oppertunity to hail nationalism.

It was so called leaders and bloggers who have mixed up politics with people of India.

  70. Sanjay says:

From The Daily Mail (UK): Mumbai terrorists were ‘funded by cash raised in UK mosques’

A banned Islamic terrorist group funded with cash raised in British mosques is believed to be behind the Mumbai attacks.

Kashmiri separatists Lashkar-e-Taiba, ‘The Army of the Righteous’, which has strong links to Al Qaeda, is accused of previous terrorist outrages in India.

…Lashkar-e-Taiba has been blamed for violence throughout India, including the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament building in New Delhi and a strike at an amusement park in Hyderabad in 2007.

It is accused of being behind a series of train bombings in Mumbai in 2006, which claimed almost 200 lives.

The group is outlawed in Britain and the US. In 2006, a Coventry man was sentenced to nine years in jail for conspiring to provide funds for its terrorist activities.

  71. B Shantanu says:

From Jihadists see “Invasion” as Triumph

…Islamists see the “Invasion of Bombay” as their victory. In their websites yesterday, many called it “Clear Victory” (Fath al-mobeen), a term used to designate the Prophet’s earliest victories.

The Jihadists have reason to feel triumphant.

They showed that they were still capable of hitting hard and on a grand scale, continuing the chain of their “triumphs” in New York, Madrid and London. They showed that they are able to change tactics and adapt to new circumstances. They made a mockery of the much advertised “counter-terrorism cooperation” between Washington and New Delhi by showing that Indians were not any safer as a result of their government’s alliance with the American ” Great Satan”.

…Just a few weeks ago, Jihadism was in retreat.

It had lost its bases and safe havens in Afghanistan, was under attack in Pakistan’s tribal area, and all but abandoned by the new leadership in Islamabad under President Asif Ali Zardari. Appeals on Jihadist websites for money indicated a cash flow problem while denunciation of Jihadi methods by some leading Muslim theologians affected the flow of new “Volunteers for Martyrdom”.

…the attacks showed the vulnerability of Indian democracy and economic growth which some Muslim intellectuals have been promoting as models for Islamic nations. The Jihadi response is categorical: Only Islam is the solution! (Al-Islam how-al hall).

…This was a bad week for opponents of Islamic terror. India, Pakistan and other governments concerned should do nothing to make it worse.

    Tarique,

Thanks for your half-hearted, polite reply to Ghazala “behenji”. How sweet and polite !

In your reply to Ghazala, I see none of the same bitter-ness that you show in your Hinduism-centric comments.

I thought you would pull out several hundred Quranic verses that show how Islam is a Religion of Peace. Did you have trouble finding any appropriate verses from Allah? Or are they non-existent?

How would the reference to the leader of Rafidhis (whom you endearingly call “Hazrat Ali”) matter to a Sunni like Ghazala?

Also, I thought you would find this video of a 3-1/2 year old toddler very appropriate:

  75. Reena Singh says:

In Islamic extremist Web forums, some praised the Mumbai attacks, including the targeting of Jews.

A man identified as Sheik Youssef al-Ayeri said the killings are in line with Islam.

“It’s all right for Muslims to set the infidels’ castles on fire, drown them with water …. and take some of them as prisoners, whether young or old, women or men, because it is one of many ways to beat them,” he wrote in the al-Fallujah forum.

Alas, more we are attacked and destroyed by this woman, more these brown slaves glorify that haughty woman.

We must fight these enemies within, brown Hindu slaves. These slaves are traitors inside our house. Unless we remove these traitors, we can’t create peace, security and prosperity in Bharat. Sonia’s presence in Delhi is costing India dearly
    François Gautier

In 1898, the French writer Emile Zola wrote an open letter to the then French president in the newspaper L’Aurore, titled j’accuse (‘I accuse’), where he accused the French government of anti- Semitism towards Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer unfairly condemned for treason.

Now it is time for the people of India to say openly that which many, including within the Congress, think secretly and may utter in the privacy of their chambers.

It is not about Manmohan Singh, it is not even about Shivraj Patil, the fall guy; it is about that one person, the Eminence Grise of India. She who pulls all the strings, She whose shadow looms menacingly over so many, She who holds no portfolio, is just a simple elected MP, like 540 others, but rules like an empress.

Sometimes, one’s very physical presence at the top is enough to move things, to influence the course of events. One word from Her, a glance, a frown, are enough to put the whole heavy, inert, unwilling machinery of India’s bureaucracy and political system in full motion. Sometimes She need not say anything: in the true tradition of Bhakti, Her ministers, Her secretaries, interpret Her silences and rush to cater to Her western and Christian identity.

Nevertheless, she has said and acted enough so that one day she may stand accused on the pages of History for what she must have done to India.

I’accuse Sonia Gandhi as being responsible for the tragedy of Mumbai, having emasculated India’s intelligence agencies by stopping them from investigating terror attacks in the last four years, including the Mumbai train blasts. She has also neutralised the ATS by ordering them at all costs to ferret out ‘Hindu terrorism’, which if it exists, has wrought minuscule damage compared to what Islamic terror has done since 2004. Did the US send a warning to India that there may be an attack on Mumbai and that the Taj would be one of the targets? Were these ignored because the ATS was too busy chasing Hindu ‘terrorists’ on Sonia’s orders? I accuse Sonia and her government of having made the NSG the laughing stock of the world. How many times did the NSG (who took ten hours to reach Mumbai) claim that it had “sanitised the Taj and that the operation was over” and how many times did a bomb go off immediately after? For the last 20 years, the NSG has guarded VIPs and has become soft. See the comments of Israeli terror specialists, who said the NSG should have first sanitised the immediate surroundings of the places of conflict, kept the bystanders and press (who gave terrorists watching TV in the Taj rooms a perfect report of the security forces’ whereabouts) out of the place, gathered enough information about the position of the terrorists and hostages before taking action, instead of immediately engaging the terrorists, and ensuring the deaths of so many hostages.

I accuse Sonia of having let her Christian and Western background, in four years, divide India on religious and caste lines in a cynical and methodical manner.

I accuse Sonia of weakening India’s spirit of sacrifice and courage, so that 20 terrorists (or less) held at ransom the financial capital of India for more than three days.

I accuse Sonia Gandhi of always pointing the finger at Pakistan, when terrorism in India is now mostly homegrown, even if it takes help, training, refuge and arms from Pakistan; of not warning Indians of the grave dangers of Islamic terror for cynical election purposes.

I accuse Sonia of being an enemy of the Hindus, who always gave refuge to persecuted minorities, and who are the only people in the world to accept that God may manifest under different names, in different epochs, using different scriptures.

I accuse Sonia Gandhi of taking advantage of India’s respect for women, its undue fascination with the Gandhi name, and its stupid mania for White Skin.

I’accuse Sonia of exploiting the Indian Press’ obsession with her. She hardly ever gave interview in 20 years, except scripted ones to NDTV, yet the Press always protects her, never blames her and keeps silent over her covert role.

I’accuse Sonia and her government of trying to make heroes of subservient and inefficient men to hide the humiliation of Mumbai 26/11. Before going to his death, Hemant Karkare, the ATS chief, was shown on television clumsily handling his helmet, as someone who uses it very rarely. Why did he die of bullet wounds in the chest when he was wearing a bullet-proof vest? Either Indian vests are inferior quality or he was not wearing one.

How did the terrorists who killed him and his fellow officer escape in the same vehicle used by the ATS chief ? Why did he and his officers go into Cama Hospital without ascertaining where the terrorists were? We honour his death, but these facts say a lot about the ATS’ battle-readiness.

Will someone in the Congress, someone who feels more Indian than faithful to Sonia, stand up and speak the truth? Who said, “Go after Hindu terrorists”? Who insisted on putting pressure on BJP governments in Karnataka or Orissa for so-called persecution of Christians, when Christians have always practised their faith in total freedom here, while their missionaries are converting hundreds of thousands of innocent tribals and Dalits with the billions of dollars given by gullible westerners? Who said, “Go soft on Islamic terrorism”? Who wants to do away with India’s nuclear deterrence in the face of Pakistani and Chinese nuclear threats, by pushing at all costs the one sided Indo-US nuclear deal, which makes no secret of its intention to denuclearise India militarily? I am sure Sonia Gandhi has good qualities: she probably was a good wife to Rajiv, a good daughter in law to Indira and by all accounts, she is a good mother to her children. One also hears first-hand reports about her concern for smaller people, her dignity in the suffering that befell her when her husband was blown to pieces, and her courtesy with visitors.

Nevertheless, she is a danger to India.

Her very presence, both physical and occult, open the doors to forces inimical to India. Even Indian Christians should understand that she is not a gift to them: her presence at the top has emboldened fanatics like John Dayal or Valson Thampu, who practise an orthodox Christianity prevalent in the West in the early 20th century, but no longer, to radicalise their flock. Indian Christians should recognise that they have a much better deal here than Christians or Hindus have in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia or Saudi Arabia.

Under Sonia’s rule, Indian Muslims, too, have been used as electoral pawns. They have been encouraged to shun the Sufi streak, a blend of the best of Islam and Vedanta, for a hard-line Sunni brand imported from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

For the good of India, her civilisation, her immense spirituality and culture, Sonia Gandhi has to go and a government that thinks Indian, breathes nationalism and will protect its citizens must be voted to power.

    Tarique,

Me fall into a trap? Or you trying to lure me into one?

Nice try, Tarique bhai. If, as you impute, this is simply Pakistani terrorism and not Islamic terrorism, then how do you define the 12,000+ Jihadi attacks in the past 7 years in over 100 countries?

Statistics and Data are available here: http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/

Hindus too live all over the word – close to 100 countries. Then, why aren’t the Hindus fighting a Holy War in all these countries?

    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism_by_country

I used to believe “moderate” apologists like you before, but not anymore. My eyes have been opened by the carnage in Mumbai. You cannot deceive me anymore with your sweet lies. I refuse to live in denial about reality, from this point onwards.

I have observed that the clever strategy employed by the so-called “Moderates” (like you) is very simple:

    – The so-called “Extremists” slaughter Hindus, Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Atheists explicitly and openly in the name of [Their God], as ordained by [Their Prophet] in [Their Holiest Book].

The emails sent by the Deccan Mujahideen, Indian Mujahideen are explicit that these killings are in the name of Allah. So why deny it?

    – So-called “Moderates” like you provide a “Trojan Horse” for their “Extremist co-religionists”, by immediately pre-empting any discussion of the real roots of terrorism in Islam and try to obfuscate Hindus by preaching: “Islam is a Religion of Peace. Islam is a Religion of Peace.”

Who should I believe – The former who openly state why and who they are doing it for? Or the latter, who likes to cover for them?

Its a Win-Win situation for Islam, either way.

So, why don’t you go and preach your “peaceful” ways in Islamic blogs? They won’t listen to you, huh?

Save your preaching for your “Extremist” Co-religionists. We Non-Believers have no need for your deceitful lies.

I am writing, though, because we (in the U.S.) are getting very conflicting stories about this attack and the response. Is it true that the Mumbai police, while armed with rifles, could not fire at the terrorists because they had no ammunition? Is it also true that a city the size of Mumbai has no S.W.A.T. (emergency response team, armed to the teeth)? I live in a city of 7,000 people and our police department has a SWAT team. I fear for our world if we do no arm and train our police to protect us from terrorists such as these.

Religion is a highly controversial issue (I dont need to tell you that) and while I don’t shy away from discussing it, I respect your choice not to indulge in that debate.

At the same time, I would request you – as a fellow Indian, if nothing else – to *not* stop thinking about our other challenges…including those of economic development.

    Hope you understand.

  86. Rishi Khujur says:

Why the LTTE is NOT a Hindu group

Since the 9/11 carnage, every Islamic apologist and his uncle, including writer William Dalrymple and General Pervez Musharraf (former President of Pakistan), have tried to whitewash Islamic terrorism by saying: “Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by Sri Lankan Hindu extremists” and “Why blame terrorism on only Islam? The LTTE is a Hindu terrorist group”.

So, why is the LTTE not a Hindu group? Let’s see the evidence of their mendacious claim.

The rebuttal is broadly classified into three areas: (i) The ideology of the organization (ii) The personal beliefs of the leaders (iii) The personal beliefs of the cadres.

And here is why the LTTE is NOT a Hindu group:

    1) Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was founded on Dravidian ideology and defined by Marxist principles of struggle against the “oppressor”.

LTTE’s speeches, pamphlets and websites are full of Marxist rhetoric and Marxist principles – Their ideology is very similar to Naxalites and Maoists who base their violent insurgency against the Indian and Nepali governments on Marxist-Leninist and Maoist principles.

Would any Hindu group follow Marx as their leader?

    2) LTTE is “secular” and its constitution never claims to fight for people of any religion. It openly claims to fight on behalf of the minority Tamil ethno-linguistic race in Sri Lanka, whose members consist of Tamil Christians, Tamil Hindus and Tamil Muslims. The LTTE is “adamantly opposed to religion”.

The “oppressor” of the Tamil language and Tamil race is identified by the LTTE to be the Sri Lankan Government who represent the majority Sinhala ethno-linguistic race (whose members are either Buddhist or Christian).

    3) Tamil Language and Tamil Race/Ethnicity are the defining raison d’être in LTTE’s ideology, not any religion, be it Hinduism or Christianity or Islam.

    4) In its entire history and over three decades of existence, has the LTTE ever claimed to represent only the Hindus, or quoted any Hindu scriptures or dedicated itself to any Hindu God or Goddess? The answer is NO. NEVER. Then, why label the LTTE a Hindu group?

    5) LTTE’s Dravidian racist ideology is also shared by their biggest supporters: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Dravida Kazhagam (DK) , two anti-Hindu and atheist organizations in India who since the 1950s, have:

    – run a hate campaign against Hindu religion
    – broken Hindu temples and desecrated Hindu murtis (sacred icons)
    – beaten Lord Rama’s posters with shoes and garlanded Lord Ganesha’s image with slippers
    – cut off the sacred threads worn by Hindu priests
    – savagely beaten up Hindu worshippers in broad daylight
    – vilely abused Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Goddess Sita etc as drunkard, promiscuous, unchaste
    – shown us that they are bent upon destroying the sacred Rama Setu (Rama’s Bridge)

    For photographs, see: http://realitycheck.wordpress.com/2006/12/09/another-statue-story/

    – These anti-Hindu Dravidian racist groups have also encouraged Muslim Missionary groups and Christian Evangelical Missionaries to encourage conversions of poor Hindus to Islam and Christianity.

    – These Dravidianist groups have inaugurated and supported a Rs.50 crore-budget Church-funded propaganda movie on the life of St.Thomas. Even the Pope has admitted that St.Thomas never visited India. But this movie depicts St.Thomas visiting India, converting the Hindu saint Thiruvalluvar to Christianity and being killed by a Hindu priest – all of which are useful for converting gullible Hindus to Christianity.

    Read: http://www.christianaggression.org/item_display.php?type=ARTICLES&id=1223432957

Would any Hindu group do any of the above? Ergo, only anti-Hindu (read Dravidianist) organizations do all of the above.

These Dravidianist groups are all inspired by the anti-Hindu ideology preached by the notorious Dravida Kazhagam founder E.V.R. a.k.a. “Periyar” .

To this very day, the LTTE’s strongest supporters in Tamil Nadu are these Hindu-hating Dravidian racist parties, the DK and DMK.

Since these Hindu-hating Dravidian groups love and openly support the LTTE, therefore it is logical that the LTTE is not a Hindu group.

    6) Inspired by Dravidian zeal, a senior LTTE official, “Colonel” Ramanan, demolished 9 Hindu temples in Eastern Sri Lanka and erected other buildings, including a fish market, in their place. Would any Hindu group do that?

    7) LTTE’s websites (TamilNet) openly promulgates the divisive Aryan-Dravidian theory, which was cunningly constructed about two centuries ago by the wily Bishop Caldwell, a Christian missionary and proselytiser, who wanted to divide Hindu society so that he could easily convert some Hindu communities calling them Dravidians, a separate entity. Would any Hindu group promote this divisive theory?

The LTTE website carries statements by the Pope and other Christian leaders, but never any statements by any Hindu leader.

In fact, the LTTE website avoids using the word Hindu. But it has no problem using the words “Christian” or “Catholic” frequently.

    8) The LTTE found mass support by portraying themselves as inheritors of the legacy of Samuel James Veluppillai Chelvanayakam (a.k.a. SJV Chelvanayakam), a practising Christian and beloved figure to Sri Lanka’s Tamils who called him Thanthai Chelva (‘Father’ Chelva).

SJV Chelvanayakam, who led his Federal Party (FP) into agitations and tried in vain to get the Sri Lankan government to get power devolved for the Tamil minority areas, grew bitter over his failure to win any meaningful concessions from the Sinhalese, and became sympathetic to the cause of Tamil separatism. The FP and other parties merged into the Tamil United Liberation Front towards that end, with SJV Chelvanayakam as their leader.

The TULF leadership nurtured and treated the separatist LTTE as its armed, youth wing. Soon, the LTTE subsumed the TULF.

    9) Several Tamil opponents and renegades of the LTTE have been assassinated while they worshipped inside Hindu temples, Christian churches and Muslim mosques. Would any Hindu group kill anyone inside a Hindu temple? Go figure. The LTTE must be truly secular.

    10) Most importantly, many of LTTE’s top leaders and many of the LTTE cadres are Christian or Muslim , including the following:

    a) Anton Stanislaus Balasingham : The chief political advisor, strategist and mentor to LTTE for over two decades.

    b) Marcelin Fuselus (nom de guerre: Victor), a senior LTTE commander from Mannar after whom the LTTE’s Anti-Tank Unit has been named.

    c) Charles Lucas Anthony (nom de guerre: Lt.Seelan), from Trincomalee, the first LTTE fighter to die in combat

    d) Many of the Tamil Tigers are Christian, including the late Miss Dhanu (Thenmozhi Rajaratnam) who was Rajiv Gandhi’s suicide-murderer

    e) Norwegian film maker Beate Arnestad’s recent acclaimed documentary film on the LTTE, “My Daughter the Terrorist”, follows two young, Catholic Tamil females, with the nom-de-guerre ‘Tharsika’ and ‘Puhalchudar’, who have been LTTE fighters since their teens and have become part of LTTE’s elite force, the Black Tigers.

Tharsika’s mother, Maria, says that her daughter, the main character in the documentary, had wanted to become a Catholic nun when she was young. This same girl, Tharsika is now shown wearing a LTTE uniform and kneeling before a statue of Mary and Infant Jesus and crossing herself during worship, in the documentary. This shows that the LTTE accommodates Christian religious beliefs in its ranks.

    f) Jesumy Fernando (nom de guerre: Kennedy) is a LTTE commando who was captured on a raid on the sole airstrip of the Sri Lanka army’s sprawling Palaly base in Jaffna in 1994. The LTTE received him back in a prisoner exchange with Sri Lankan Army POWs on 28 September 2002.

    g) “Second Lieutenant” Robert Kanthamarajah Uthayakumar who was killed in an army ambush near Kirumichchai on March 5, 2005.

    h) Lawrence Thilagar, former International spokesman of the LTTE and now the TRO Project Co-ordinator.

    i) Basheer Kaka, a Muslim from Trincomalee, was first made in charge of training the LTTE members in the eighties and then was promoted LTTE’s Batticoloa leadership in the nineties.

    j) Sri Lankan Police are looking for Mohammed Amzar Ramzin (pictured in the article below) a hardcore Black Tiger cadre. He is 24 years old. According to the Defence Ministry, Mohammed Amzar Ramzin was the LTTE mastermind of many civilian massacres, including the bus bombing at Dambulla and the suicide bomb blast that killed over 100 navy personnel at Digampathana.

    See: http://www.dailynews.lk/2008/08/06/sec01.asp

    k) Dr. Sachi Sri Kantha analysed the names of the various Black Tiger suicide-bombers listed in the LTTE’s Sooriya Puthalvargal 2003 Souvenir and revealed that that atleast twenty of these LTTE suicide-bombers were Catholics (Sri Kantha to Professor Robert Pape, 24 July 2004 in http://www.sangam.org).

Despite having this information in his files, Professor Robert Pape proceeded to give the American Conservative an interview for publication (on 18th July 2005) and carefully avoided any reference to Christian involvement in the LTTE (and Tamil) struggle. Not surprisingly, Sri Kantha was offended and chided him thus: “Why did you fail to mention the ‘Christian families’? Is it because, this would offend the sentiments of the American Conservative readership?” [Sri Kantha, “On Educating Professor Robert Pape of the University of Chicago,” http://www.sangam.org.]

    l) Kittu, the tough LTTE commander of Jaffna, accompanied his Christian wife Cynthiato Church and lit candles at Christian shrines.

    m) Stanley was a senior LTTE Leader, who was killed in the military action in the battle for Kilinochchi in November 2008.

    n) Abdul Samad Mohamed Raik , a Muslim Sri Lankan petrol-pump cashier in Leicestershire, England, was arrested for scamming an entire English village to finance the LTTE activities.

    See: http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/aug/06scam.htm

So, why would so many Christians and Muslims risk their lives and die fighting for the LTTE cause?

    9) Hence, in Sri Lanka, the biggest supporters of the LTTE have been the Tamil Christian clergy, from the Catholic, Methodist, Anglican and evangelical churches.
To this day, not a single Tamil Christian church or clergyman has condemned the LTTE as being pro-Hindu or anti-Christian.

Normally, Christian groups, lead by the likes of John Dayal, are quick to condemn any organization that is pro-Hindu or anti-Christian.

    10) The Sri Lankan Police investigating the seizure of suicide jackets in Mabole on February 1, 2008, two days prior to the Sri Lankan Independence Day celebrations, have arrested 3 Christian priests from a fundamentalist religious sect and recovered several suicide kits.

Under interrogation the priests have confessed that they had brought down around 30 suicide cadres from Mannar to Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. They also admitted to transporting several suicide kits and weapons to these areas. Police were able to arrest the person suspected to have transported a parcel (containing two suicide kits, eight detonators, eight batteries, and six remote controlled devices) to Mabole area.

The arrested person was identified as Nagulan, a pastor of a church in Mannar which is a branch of Four Square Church, a Christian evangelist group. After searching the priest’s church at Pahankammukotte in Mannar, security forces were able to recover three suicide kits, two claymore mines and three magnet bombs.

Read more about: “ The deadly triangle of LTTE + NGO + Christian extremists exposed” at:

    http://www.srilankawatch.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=172&Itemid=1

    11) A senior Christian priest, Rev. Sam T. Jayathilakarajah of the Achchelu Methodist Church and his brother, Dr. Jayakularajah enthusiastically gave shelter and performed surgery on injured LTTE members (including Pulenthiran and Seelan) after they attacked the Chavakachcheri Police station in 1982.

    12) A second Christian priest, Father Aabaranam Singarayar provided a constant supply of painkillers to these LTTE members as they recuperated from surgery. This is confirmed by Maj.Gen. Sarath Munasinghe, the head of the army intelligence unit of Sri Lanka, who arrested interrogated both these priests.

    13) A third Christian priest, Father Anton Sinnarasa was also arrested by the Sri Lankan army for sheltering the LTTE members and for his involvement in the LTTE bank van holdup at Neervely, where 81 lakhs of rupees was robbed on March 25th 1981. In September 1983, Father Sinnarasa later escaped from custody during the famous Batticoloa jailbreak. He slipped away to Canada a few years later and continues to lead LTTE-front activities in Tamil-dominated suburbs of Toronto under the name “Anton Philip”.

    14) Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ran a detailed report on another Christian priest, Father Francis Xavier who is a leading organizer and fundraiser for the Tamil Tigers in Toronto, Canada.

Read the three-page feature about him: “Whose Truth?” which can be read at: http://www.cbc.ca/toronto/features/whose_truth/xavier.html

    15) All the top people in LTTE’s front charity group, Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) , now under FBI scrutiny in the USA, are Christians:
â–ª Mr.K.P.Regi, Executive Director of TRO,
â–ª Mr. Lawrence Thilagar, TRO Project Co-ordinator,
â–ª Mr. Lawrence Christie, Planning Director of the TRO
â–ª Mr.E.Robert, Administrative Head of the TRO Accelerated Rehabilitation Project.
â–ª Mr. Vincent, TRO’s Director of Tsunami Rehabilitation and Construction
â–ª Mr.P.Mariyanayagam Croos (Cruz) , President of the Mannar TRO,
â–ª Ms. P.Mariina Croos (Cruz) , of the Mannar TRO
â–ª Yude Genoba, of the Mannar TRO

    16) Not surprisingly, the TRO, works in alliance with the Church of South India, in the Tamil areas of Northen and Eastern Sri Lanka.

Reverend Father A.Jeyakumar, Reverend Father S.E. Arnold, Reverend Father P. Anukular and Reverend Father J. Thevarudchelvam from Mullaitivu Diocese (Church of South India) and Mr J Rajanayagam from Jaffna Diocese (Church of South India) , are the chief guests at TRO functions held to distribute fishing nets, boats and houses to the Tsunami victims.

    17) The top 3 Catholic Bishops of Jaffna, Mannar and Trincomalee-Batticaloa (Rev. Thomas Soundaranayagam, Rev. Dr. Joseph Rayappu and Rev. Kingsley Swamipillai) , regularly meet the LTTE leadership and grace LTTE events.

    18) The LTTE supremo, Velupillai Pirapaharan, named his first born son with a Christian name, Charles Lucas Anthony, in memory of his dead comrade. Would any religious-minded Hindu father ever give his son a fully Christian name?

    19) In April 2008, LTTE desperately appealed to the Sri Lankan army to stop the shelling and rocket attacks of the Catholic “ Our Lady of Madhu ” church in Madhu; and even helped the Catholic clergy to carry away the sacred statue of Mary beyond the warzone, when the Sri Lankan army’s barrage hit the adjacent “Infant Jesus” church.

    20) The LTTE is indeed secular. Many of the Members of the Sri Lankan Parliament from the LTTE-affiliated political party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) are either Tamil Christians or Tamil Muslims.

In February 2008, the LTTE appointed a Muslim lawyer, Rizwan Mohammed Imam, to be the TNA Member of Parliament from Jaffna.

Other key TNA Members of Parliament from Vanni are Selvam Adaikkalanathan (a Tamil Catholic from Mannar) and Solomon Cyril from Jaffna.

In the past, the LTTE had appointed another Christian, Joseph Pararajasingham as the TNA MP from Batticaloa.

    21) The LTTE hates Sanskrit, the sacred Hindu language of the Vedas, Vedanta and Bhagavad Gita. The LTTE has displayed a consistent hatred of Sanskrit and embarked on a rigourous campaign of de-Sanskritisation, i.e. a removal of Sanskrit names from their cadres and changing it to non-Sanskrit names.

Such is the hatred that Prabhakaran became Pirapaharan; Dinesh became Tamilchelvan and so on.

Would any Hindu group hate Sanskrit?

    22) Simultaneously, with the de-Sanskritisation, in order to show the LTTE’s secularism, several other LTTE leaders were forced by its leaders adopted a Christian or Muslim nom-de-guerre.

    – The Head of LTTE’s Military Intelligence “Colonel” Shanmuganathan Ravishankar was renamed “Charles “.

    – The first Black Tiger, Vallipuram Vasanthan was christened Captain “Miller “.

    – The Amparai district LTTE Economic Division Head became “Henry“.

    – The LTTE spokesperson, Rasiah Ilanthariyan became “ Marshall“.

    – The commander of LTTE’s Vinothan brigade was renamed “Jim Kelly “, and another LTTE commander was renamed “Robert “.

    – The LTTE delegate to the Thimpu talks, Sivakumaran became “Anton

    – And Lt. Col. Thambirasa Kuhasanthan was renamed “Nizam

    – The LTTE head of the Victor anti – armoured artillery unit was renamed Lt.Col.”Akbar

    – The LTTE head of Sathurukondan area (Batticoloa) was renamed “Gadaffi” after the Libyan Muslim dictator (Muammar Gadaffi)

    – The LTTE leader for the Muhamalai sector was renamed “Jerry”.

    – The LTTE’s key emissary between Pirapaharan and Kittu (during its war with the IPKF) was renamed “Johnny”

Now, after reading all this proof, why would anyone in their right mind call the LTTE a Hindu group?

Therefore, the LTTE is not a Hindu group. I rest my case.

thanks rishi for the indepth analysis of why LTTE is Not a Hindu terrorist organization….infact i have a problem with the entire branding of terrorism by hindus as “HINDU” terrorism….

i have not come across a single incident where a terrorist (who is a practicing Hindu) seek sanction for the dastardly act of killing innocnet people in sacred Hindu Scriptures.

if that is the case, please enlighten me….

i am a firm beleiver in the fact that if any person commits an act that the IPC and other criminal legislations in the country prohibit…the trial and punishment should be fair, swift and just irrespective of their relegious affiliations….

    a few quick points…..

    1. in every army throughout documented history there have been “mercenaries” ie ibrahim khan gardi and the portuguese cannoneers in the maratha army, similarly the mughals have had rajput allies..but how do you even claim that ghori, ghaznavi or even babur pre battle of khanwa had any significant hindu ally or rajput component in their army ( breaking temples and carrying on JIHAD)…if you leave alone trechery by some hindu princess

    2. maosits beleive that “religion is the opium of the masses” do not beleive in GOD…..but in their own class less, casteless ideology….

…In Delhi, where the number of self-important politicians is highest, as many as 14,200 policemen have been deployed on round-the-clock VIP security duty.

…Thirty politicians like L K Advani, Mayawati, Narendra Modi, Jayalalithaa, Murli Manohar Joshi, Amar Singh and Paswan are provided Z-plus security…

  90. Bharat says:

    1. Simply stop Hindu abuse, there is nothing called Hindu terrorism. Don’t provoke Hindus beyond a level, else you will see the repercusions, when Hindus will take up arms and crushed the Jihadis and chrsitian missioanies.

    2. Those scoundrals dare to abuse Hindus by terming them terrorists, must realise Bharat is a Hindu Rastra. Muslims, those can’t live in Hindu Rastra, must leave our soil and go to their holy land, Pakistan. Those live in Bharat, have to respect Bharatiya culture, civilization, history, heritage, dharma.

    3. Yesterday a fella called MJ Akbar wrote in Rediff: “People forget that India has fought back Muslim terrorism in Kashmir; Sikh terrorism in Punjab, Christian terrorism in Nagaland and Hindu terrorism in Assam, and amongst the Naxalites.”

    4. MJ Akbar must know, muslims, christians and sikhs used religions for their war and violence. So, there are muslim terrorism, chrsitian terrorism, sikh terrorism. But nowhere in the history of Bharat/India, Hindus used religion for war and violence.

    5. In Asom, ULFA don’t use religion for their war and violence. They fight for the whole old Asom (now seven states), which comprise of all different religious and ethnic people. So as naxals and maoists. They don’t used hindu religion for their war and violence. There are christians also in Maoists. In Orissa, most Maoists are chrsitians.

    6. MJ Akbar and other fellas: Jihadi terror facilitator Congress-UPA and sickular media has given you sickulars a term to abuse hindus, intimidate hindus, bully hindus. If the provocation turned into real, none but anti-Hindu sickular brigades to blame. Before that happen, correct yourself.

From: “Calling All Pakistanis” By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN, Published: December 2, 2008

On Feb. 6, 2006, three Pakistanis died in Peshawar and Lahore during violent street protests against Danish cartoons that had satirized the Prophet Muhammad. More such mass protests followed weeks later. When Pakistanis and other Muslims are willing to take to the streets, even suffer death, to protest an insulting cartoon published in Denmark, is it fair to ask: Who in the Muslim world, who in Pakistan, is ready to take to the streets to protest the mass murders of real people, not cartoon characters, right next door in Mumbai?

After all, if 10 young Indians from a splinter wing of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party traveled by boat to Pakistan, shot up two hotels in Karachi and the central train station, killed at least 173 people, and then, for good measure, murdered the imam and his wife at a Saudi-financed mosque while they were cradling their 2-year-old son — purely because they were Sunni Muslims — where would we be today? The entire Muslim world would be aflame and in the streets. [ link ]

In Full: What went wrong: The inside story by Shishir Gupta

The Intelligence failure in the run-up to the November 26 attacks and the crossed wires during the 60-hour siege: Shishir Gupta reconstructs

A day after P Chidambaram took over as the Union Home Minister, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, Intelligence Bureau Director P C Haldar and Maharashtra Director General of Police A K Roy met in his chamber to discuss the Mumbai terror attacks. Roy is said to have told them that the public was “extremely angry” and that India should militarily retaliate against Pakistan in order to teach them a lesson.

Later that evening, the top bureaucrats, without the minister, assembled again in Gupta’s room. With the NSA listening, Roy asked Haldar why the November 20 intelligence alert on a Lashkar-e-Toiba ship, given to the Coast Guard and Naval Headquarters, was not passed on to the Mumbai Police. Haldar bluntly replied that the Mumbai Police could do nothing on the high seas, clearly indicating that the Navy and the Coast Guard had failed to deliver.

The alerts sent by the IB in the past three years to the Mumbai Police and the action taken were again discussed threadbare at a meeting in Nagpur on December 19 between Roy, newly sworn in Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and State Home Minister Jayant Patil. There was concurrence on the need to have a high-level inquiry, which could be headed by R D Pradhan, who was home secretary under former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, with V Balachandran, former special secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing, and Ajit Nimbalkar, former Maharashtra chief secretary, as members.

What is evident in the flurry of meetings, from New Delhi to Nagpur, is the growing realisation that on November 26 night, all systems that could have prevented a 26/11 failed.

    INTELLIGENCE
Even on the morning of 26/11, a communication asking for activation of 10 SIM cards was picked up by the R&AW on the Bangladesh border. Intelligence agencies failed to decipher its significance. At 9.21 pm, the attack began

IB chief Haldar and his R&AW counterpart Ashok Chaturvedi failed to act on the top-secret alert (see the scanned document below) sent to then Maharashtra DG P S Pasricha on November 20, 2007. Haldar wrote to Pasricha that reliable inputs indicated that the LeT was planning a major terrorist strike and the action might involve “fidayeen attack, stand-off firing and use of grenades”. Even though the exact target had not been disclosed, he added, the operation could involve taking hostages. Asking the DG to sensitise his officers, Haldar promised to revert “as soon as” more information was available. Even as Special Director, Multi-Agency Centre (MAC), Haldar had written to Pasricha on August 7, 2006, and given details of specific targets in Maharashtra.

However, Haldar never reverted back to Pasricha, despite the promise, till four days after the Marriot Hotel bombing in Islamabad. On September 20, 2008, Joint Director (MAC) IB Ashok Prasad alerted the Maharashtra DG (the scanned document on top) that the LeT was planning an attack in Mumbai and identified Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Vallabbhai Patel Stadium, Sea Rock or Taj Land’s End Hotel, Mumbai Juhu airfield and JW Marriot Hotel as likely targets.

The scene now shifted to Delhi and the US, through established intelligence channels, alerted R&AW Joint Secretary A K Dashmana in a November 18, 2008, meeting that an LeT ship was trying to infiltrate into Indian waters. It also gave latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates of the vessel. This input was passed on to the IB for dissemination to the respective agencies. Joint Director Prabhakar Alok forwarded the input to the Naval Headquarters and the Coast Guard for action.

While the Naval Headquarters never passed on the intelligence to its sword-arm, the Western Navy, the Coast Guard launched a search for the suspected LeT vessel on November 21 dawn. As the provided coordinates by the US Intelligence put the vessel 20-30 miles south of Karachi, the Coast Guard never found the ship. Its officers not only wrote a letter to IB Joint Director Alok but also called him up in a bid to get more intelligence. Alok promised to revert, but like his boss never did.

Even on the morning of 26/11, a communication asking for activation of 10 SIM cards was picked up by the R&AW on the Bangladesh border. Intelligence agencies failed to decipher its significance. At 9.21 pm, the attack began, with Ajmal Kasab and Ismail Khan opening fire at the CST Terminus. The Mumbai Police top brass was at the time making their way to Oberoi Trident to attend a wedding.

    POLICE
A price was paid for the division of authority between the Mumbai Police Commissioner, who was absent from the command centre, and the DG, who is in-charge of the state but not the city

Almost around the same time, there was another high-level meeting on at another place in the city. The then Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad Chief Hemant Karkare, DG Roy and the then state Home Minister R R Patil were discussing the sensitive Malegaon blast investigation. Around 9 pm, they called it a day. Karkare called up home to say he would be back in time for dinner, while Roy left to pick up his wife for the Trident wedding.

While they were on their way to the hotel, Roy got a call from a friend at Masala Kraft restaurant in the Taj Palace Hotel saying that there was firing outside. The DG immediately alerted DCP (Zone I) Vishwas Nagre Patil to reach the spot and take control as it could be gang warfare. The friend again called up, and this time the DG could hear the continuous burst of fire on the phone. Roy decided to give up the plan to go to the wedding and returned to the headquarters. Here all top state officials except that of the Mumbai Police were watching the action on TV in his room, along with Home Minister Patil.

Roy called up the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s control room, only to find that Joint Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria handling the operations and Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor were not there. By now, reports of firing were pouring in from CST Terminus, Cama Hospital, Taj Palace, Nariman House and Trident Hotel. With Gafoor parked inside his car outside the Trident, the command and control of Mumbai Police response had collapsed, with few ready to take orders from Maria and Roy not in charge of the city.

The city and the country paid heavily for the division of authority between the Mumbai Police Commissioner and the DG on that day as the two for the past decade have had a separate police communication network, budget and operational control. Even the annual confidential report of the Mumbai Police Commissioner is written by State Additional Chief Secretary and not by the State DG.

The decision to withdraw AK-47 assault rifles from the police inspectors, taken by Roy as Mumbai Police Commissioner three years ago, also proved disastrous. All that the Mumbai Police had in response to the LeT’s artillery was assault fire and grenades of World War II vintage, .303 Lee Enfield rifles, .38 bore revolvers, 9 mm pistols and lathis.

Only Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte had got an AK-47 issued from police armoury that day. When he came face to face with the terrorists along with encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and Karkare, he fired twice at Kasab but missed narrowly. Not wearing the state-of-the-art bullet-proof headgear he had got from Kosovo, he was shot dead along with his two colleagues. It was around midnight that Maria and Roy realised the situation had got out of control. Maharashtra Chief Secretary Johny Joseph was requested to seek commandos and the NSG for help.

Given the cost of the breakdown of coordination that day, the state Government is now mulling putting the Mumbai Police Commissioner under the direct control of the state DG. This was given in-principle clearance at the meeting in Nagpur last week, but will become operational only after the three-member inquiry committee has submitted its report.

So, on 26/11, barring constable Tukaram Omble, who took Kasab’s five bullets in his chest to arrest him, and a handful of officers, the Mumbai Police was found woefully wanting. This set the stage for the Army, Naval Commandos (MARCOS) and the NSG to enter the theatre of operations.

    ARMY, NAVY AND NSG
Marcos first refused to enter the hotels without state authorisation, then claimed to have killed two terrorists inside Taj within hours of starting operations. That information was totally false

The first to be called for commando help was Mumbai Sub-Area Commander Major General R K Hooda, who in turn informed the Maharashtra Government that he did not have any Army commandos with him. So what the public saw in the early hours were only Army footsoldiers on peripheral duties and not crack troops.

On November 26 midnight, Joseph called up Western Naval Commander J S Bedi for marine commandos as well as NSG Director J K Dutt in Delhi. It took another two hours for MARCOS to finally arrive. Although the Navy denies it, MARCOS refused to enter the Taj or Trident without written authorisation from the state Government. After the matter was sorted, two columns (seven each) of MARCOS entered the Taj and the Trident complexes. With the NSG team headed by a Brigadier still on its way, having had to arrange an IL-76 aircraft from Chandigarh to fly them and then Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, the MARCOS made it officially known that they had killed two terrorists at the Taj complex between 4-4.30 am.

This information was totally false and it is still not clear whether the MARCOS engaged the enemy directly on that day. The NSG landed at 4.20 am on November 27 and took over the operation at 9 am as the MARCOS refused to function under the NSG Brigadier. In fact Army and Navy officers further complicated matters by going live on TV channels while the fire-fight was on. Southern Army Commander Noble Thamburaj talked about a dozen terrorists being present in the Taj to the media even though he had no direct knowledge of the operations. General Hooda, the Sub-Area Commander, played to the gallery while the MARCOS projected itself as Rambo.

Neither did NSA Narayanan, who was out at a party that fateful day, nor the then chief minister took matters in their control. Shivraj Patil was in Mumbai only for a few hours during which he announced that terrorists had run away. A month after the Mumbai massacre, during which IB operational chief D K Sinha and R&AW Joint Secretary J S Khanna were in constant touch, a number of questions remain unanswered:

    • Identity of the local contacts of the terrorists who helped the LeT identify the targets, including Nariman House? Past three year records of all the Taj and Trident Hotel employees have revealed nothing.

    • Is there an al-Qaeda link to the Lashkar attack as for the first time Jews were slaughtered?

    • Identity and location of the controller talking to the two Taj Palace terrorists? The controller virtually gave away his location when the terrorist asked him, “Wahan kitne baaje hain?” The VOIP call was traced to West Virginia and then lost.

    • Were there 15 terrorists in total with five following up in another boat? The hunt is still on. The track back device in the used GPS was set for K T Bandar near Karachi.

    • Who is the owner of ship Al Hussaini?

is it a coincidence that blasts in mumbai ,akshardham, jaipur, ahmedabad all targetted diamond traders ?in mumbai train blasts all bombs were placed in first class compartments which is always full of diamond traders.in 26/11 ,the CST random firing was started to divert the entire police action away from the attackers who wanted to kill diamond merchants in chabad house , leopold cafe , taj and oberoi.is it a coincidence that taj and oberoi were hosting diamond trade conferences and meetings and had diamond trade guests in huge numbers on 26/11 ?is it a coincidence that the chabad house founder is an ex israeli armyman who after retirement started a diamond polishing plant ?is it a coincidence that a few diamond traders got shot at leopold cafe ?there is a lot sinister here and a lot more than what meets the eye .who could be the people who want to destroy the diamond traders and for what reasons ?it could be a few top politicians from maharashtra and gujarat with whom the diamond traders have touched a raw nerve on political matters ?it could be lev leview’s diamond cartel ,a lubavitcher jew, who is in cut throat competition with de beers diamond firm ?are the de beers polished diamond suppliers being systematically targetted by the lev leview cartel ?are qasab and company the ‘contractual killers ‘ hired from pakistani regions to do the dirty job for politicians and diamond cartels ?did hemant karkare during his malegaon probe bump into the ‘diamond terror ‘ network ? in the age of ‘kalyug’ truth will not be reached easily.

“xiong hui” is none other than our beloved “tarique”.

The smarty-pants that he is, he thinks by using a Chinese-sounding name, we can’t spot him. 🙂

Given his Jihadi obsession, is it surprising that his conspiracy theories tend to blame the Jews?

Watch out, “tarique” will keep returning with new IDs and new IPs – to distract our eyes and ears from the ongoing Jihad against India.

  97. v.c.krishnan says:

    Dear Sir,
I also suspect that it is Tarique. Things are not what one appears to see. I had thought earlier that Tarique had some quality in him and his arguments were unbiased; I now have a feeling that instead of being hacked you have a worm in your blog to misdirect things.
Can he be a ISI agent?
    Regards,
    vck

  98. tarique says:

vck, before labelling me a ISI agent u must check some hard facts . ahmed shuja pasha the pakistan ISI chief served as a peacekeeping commander in the ‘diamond conflict ‘ zone of sierra leone from 2001 to 2002, and was selected by michael mullen on behalf on the UN .that is the reason why ashfaq kiyani refused to let ahmed shuja pasha travel to india . michael mullen is also in charge of CIA operations . strangely he has been given the stiff task to calm tensions between india and pakistan .

Excerpts from How West Asian views Mumbai attacks by Atul Aneja in “The Hindu”:

With the exception of Israel, there is plenty of sympathy in the Arab and Iranian media for Pakistan, which is seen not as an instigator of the Mumbai attacks but as a victim of this conspiracy.

…The influential hardline Iranian daily, Kayhan, said on December 1 that India, the U.S., Britain and Israel were behind the Mumbai terror attacks. It observed that neither the Al-Qaeda nor the Pakistan government was involved in the strikes. Kayhan is known to be close to the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but that does not mean it necessarily reflects his views or that of a majority of Iranians.

…The events that followed the Mumbai attacks have generated sympathy for Pakistan in West Asia. An editorial in Saudi Arabia’s daily Al Madina said: “Terrorism also threatens Pakistan’s very existence, and directly or indirectly harms its sovereignty over its territory, every time the U.S. attacks what Washington claims is a ‘terrorist’ target within Pakistan. [In the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks], India is furious while Pakistan, already in an extremely complex economic predicament, definitely needs no more crises to add to its existing ones.”

…The Iranian leadership was the first to imply that the Pakistani state was not involved in the Mumbai attacks. On December 2, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told state television IRIB that the “savage terrorist attacks which killed so many innocent people were staged by [elements] from outside the region as regional people would never do such a thing.”

@ tarique/xiong hui: you had been cautioned. If you must have someone read your theories, pl. start your own blog/website….Pl. don’t waste my and my readers’ time on this stuff.

  102. B Shantanu says:

@ Tarique: What really worries me is people like you giving credence to such “theories”.

Where were you heading with your hypothesis? Is it all part of a larger “Zionist” conspiracy?

    Read these few links:

W’end Reading: Pakistan, Muslims and Bleeding Heart Liberals
and this series of posts by Offstumped

And while you are at it, also read the dossier of evidence prepared by the Government – published by The Hindu and elsewhere

    …and then we can talk.

  103. v.c.krishnan says:

    Dear Tarique,
I had appreciated your way of approach. Please read my earlier mails. The way you quit after being consistintently proved wrong in many ways by the lady who promised to get back to you every time you came up with placating theories, and then returning in the form of Xiong Hui proves me right.
You have once again gone on a tangent. I still suspect your credentials and I will continue to warn Shri. Shantanu about you being an ISI agent.
Coming back to Shri Mullen. Please read my mail on the Mumbai Attacks. I have very clearly stated that I THINK IT IS A CIA PLOT TO DESTABILISE INDIA after their melt down and the rascals their financial theorists were proved to be.
I still think that it was a last ball bowled by the CONVERSION MANIAC Bush against HINDU INDIA.

The Indian Media cannot be believed and if their share holding is to be believed ( There is you tube presentation on this matter) then let me assure you the support of the US will be detrimental to the interests of Bharat.
Come out with the truth Xiong Hui as to who you are. I still think you are either a virus or a worm in this blog.

A recent BBC report suggests the presence of “a Lashkar e-Taiba cell in Mumbai which played a crucial role in the attacks which is still undiscovered.”.

Bland denial from the Indian police. Addl. Commissioner Deven Bharti “This was a totally independent module of ten terrorists who were launched from the territorial limits of Pakistan like a commando group”

  105. tarique says:

BBC speaks half truths . did the BBC reports not find the numerous presence of DTC sightholders at taj ,oberoi and nariman house on 26/11 ? BBC IS NOW…….BULLSHIT BROADCASTING CORPORATION .

  106. tarique says:

this channel 4 documentary by dan reed is banned in india by the indian government and the mumbai crime branch . the mumbai crime branch is planning a strict legal action on this documentary .the sole intention of dan reed’s documentary is ‘divide and rule’ policy between indian hindus and muslims . what does dan reed know about the attacks ?does he know that DTC sightholders were staying in taj ,oberoi and nariman house ? does he know that no post portem or autopsy was done on the dead bodies of the rabbi and his wife in nariman house ? does he know that nanny sandra who looked after baby moshe was an indian citizen and a prime witness in the nariman house ……that within a matter of 72 hours she was allowed to travel to israel and granted an israeli citizenship ? dan reed’s story is null and void and irrelevent until the aspects of DTC ‘s role in the attacks is highlighted .DTC was also one of the prime suspects in the 9/11 attacks till they were given a clean chit by US congressman tim roemer . this guy tim roemer will soon arrive in india as next US ambassador to india .

  107. tarique says:

dan reed must investigate why the presence of miss varda shine ( DTC executive ) at the taj hotel sightholders meeting was hidden by the media ? why the oberoi trident diamond trade exhibition and a gujrati jain diamond traders wedding function not recieve media attention ? why diamond trader rashmi mehta ,owner of gembel diamonds was using his high political connection to avoid a post mortem of the dead bodies in nariman house ? dawood ibrahim ,chhotta rajan , mohammed ali (dock mafia boss in mumbai ), rashmi mehta ,dilip mehta (rosy blue diamonds) , bharat shah (b.vijaykumar)are the other player in the attacks……..but all honest investigations in the attacks should begin and end with the role of DTC executives. DTC is the of the biggest global terrorism players. their role gets covered up due to their high connections among US congressmen and big media bosses like rupert murdoch . DTC is the rough diamond worldwide distribution wing of polished diamond retail giants de beers .

The Mumbai attacks were the handiwork of dastardly jews, diamond traders and your friendly neighbourhood gujjus? Gosh-darn-it ….. and here the Prosecutor is getting ready to present a video tape in court in which Kasab says that his father took money from Lashkar-e-Toiba so that he could go and kill some Indians???? Gosh-darn, it must have been those diamond traders in disguise!!!

hahahahahahhahahahahaha ………. thanks for the laughs, on a dreary monday morning.

And, you must the other side of the Incognito coin!!!

  110. B Shantanu says:

Very interesting Avinash. Thanks for the link. Some excerpts below:

On June 29, the 1267 committee of the UNSC — so named after the resolution mandating sanctions on the Al-Qaeda and the Taliban — slapped an assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo on Karachi-based businessman Arif Qasmani, whom it described as the “chief coordinator” for the Lashkar’s “dealings with outside organisations” and a provider of “significant support for LeT terrorist operations.”

In a press release, the 1267 committee noted: “Qasmani has worked with LeT to facilitate terrorist attacks, to include the July 2006 train bombing in Mumbai, India, and the February 2007 Samjota (sic) Express bombing in Panipat, India. Qasmani utilised money that he received from Dawood Ibrahim, an Indian crime figure and terrorist supporter, to facilitate the July 2006 train bombing in Mumbai, India. Qasmani also conducted fundraising activities on behalf of LeT in late 2005. Arif Qasmani has also provided financial and other support to Al Qaeda.”

…In the exchange of dossiers between India and Pakistan following the terrorist attack in Mumbai, Islamabad had sought to ‘balance’ the optics of being asked to act against the LeT by seeking details from New Delhi on the progress of investigations in the Samjhauta case.

  111. tarique says:

patriot , why r u taking the qasab confession in nair hospital in mumbai very seriously and citing the public prosecutors argument in court . r u aware that a confession given to police is not admissible in a court of law ? let me give u a similiar example of saqiq shaikh picked up from the trombay muslim area of cheetah camp near chembur .the crime branch arrested him and took his ‘on camera’ confession . he confessed on camera and it was relayed all over the media that he belonged to deccan mujahideen and he personally placed the bombs in ahmedabad , jaipur , mumbai , delhi and american centre attack in calcutta . when the camera confession evidence was placed in a courtroom , the mumbai ATS came to his rescue . the mumbai ATS successfully proved it in court that sadiq shaikh was tortured and beaten up in the lock up by crime branch officers …..that out of fear of beating he confessed to the 2006 mumbai train bombings and other attacks . the judge accepted the argument and freed sadiq shaikh leaving the mumbai crime branch red faced . today sadiq shaikh is a free man .

  112. tarique says:

arif qasmani has been described as a rich millionaire businessman from karachi . what was arif qasmani’s business ? what was he dealing in ? what was he buying and selling ? any proper answers that can help solve the jigsaw puzzle of 26/11 attacks ? why was dawood henchman mohammed ali ,the undisputed king of the mumbai docks ,left untouched by the investigating agencies ? why was mohammed ali allowed to contest lok sabha polls on a BSP ticket from south mumbai seat ?

  113. Patriot says:

    @ tarique –

i do give a lot of importance to the nair hospital testimony, as kasab gave it freely and proudly. It is up to his lawyer to prevent it from being sworn into evidence. So far the prosecutor has said that it will be introduced.

and, as far as the rest of ur crack conspiracy theories go – please take it to other sites where these are welcomed. I am sure the jews are quaking in their boots knowing that tarique is getting ready to expose them.

as far as ali is concerned, why don’t u ask the bsp that question? And, if u have evidence of wrong doing, take it to the courts – they will give u a patient hearing, i am sure.

and, pls don’t waste any more bandwidth on the conspiracy theories. I have heard them all including the one where the western powers faled the holocaust to take away muslim land.

  114. tarique says:

i do not give a lot of importance to the public prosecutor ujjawal nikam or the defense lawyer abbas kazmi or the judge m.l. tahilyani . all of them are nothing but courtroom ‘fixers’.the entire 26/11 trial is a big ‘farce’ and centres only around ajmal qasab. the real conspiracy that took place in taj ,oberoi and nariman house is being kept hidden by these law enforcers . ujjawal nikam wastes an entire days courtroom proceedings arguing whether qasab should be allowed to read books in jail or not .are we indian taxpayers spending lakhs on nikam’s security to argue about qasab’s reading hobby ? nikam is arguing the case on the lines that taj hotel was attacked to liberate kashmir from india…….do u believe his theory ?
