What is common to a puppy and the India-US Nuclear Deal?

A: They are both offensive to Muslims (and possibly against Islam)…

Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, vice-president of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB)…said the nuke deal does not sound good…” “Our contention is national as well as Islamic.”

Samajwadi Party rebel MP Munnawar Hasan…(said)…“Support to the nuclear deal is tantamount to back-stabbing Muslims. Muslims across the world are opposed to the US,”

as for the “puppy”…

A puppy postcard (with an image of) a black dog sitting in a police officer’s hat…has prompted complaints from members of the Islamic community (in UK).

It is understood that Muslims have been upset by it because dogs are considered ritually unclean. Some shopkeepers have been refusing to display the advert.

Fortunately, some sense seems to have prevailed

I am struggling to understand what has Islam got to do with a nuclear deal (lets forget Pakistan and its own nuclear programme for a minute) and how can displaying the picture of any “life” be anti-religion?

Thoughts welcome

UPDATE: Siddharth Vardarajan has written a post titled, “Don’t use Muslims as crutch on nuclear deal“. It makes some interesting points.

    Dear Sir,

All this you must understand is the creation of the media. People are seeing too much of this INSTANT FLASH NOW News!
The media barrons have to sell sell and make money. They have to talk, Talk, Talk, as if what they say is something of great importance. They twist and turn at every stage.
They ignite fury and not MINDS.
They believe in creeating chaos portraying evrything as they wish, Positively or Negatively.
It is time that we as sensible Human Bodies get rid of this Media Phobia, and learn to live and carry on with TRUE HUMAN LIVING!
Throw this media into the slush and slime where it belongs.
To remind you, if you have a chance please see the Movie of Hollywood, THE FRONT PAGE, starring I think Jack Lemmon and another famous humorous Hollywood Actor, and you will understand the depths of depravity the press will go to to get it First into the Front Page.
The religious fanaticism and hatred has been more of a creation of the media an supposed to be some “Qualified Expert” writers.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the reports also highlight the appalling failure of Muslim leadership in as much as no leader has been able to extricate himself* from the “Islamic straightjacket” and look at the issues on their own merit..

I am sure a lot of “Hindus” oppose the N-deal too…but the opposition – or the support – must be based on objective measures and on the basis of informed opinion rather than knee-jerk reactions…

    * Significantly, I have not heard any “female” Islamic voices in this debate yet…

No Islamic State allows its minorities the freedoms that Muslims demand from – and get – from non-Islamic States. Objecting to puppies on postcards or requiring booties on dogs may seem trivial in themselves, but they are like the camel and the tent. Already an archbishop and a law lord have spoken up for the sharia in Britain. Only Australia is emphatic that immigrants must assimilate – or go back.

“Only Australia is emphatic that immigrants must assimilate – or go back.”

And, France ….. a nation that bans crosses and headscarves in all schools and colleges. And, would not bow down to any muslim saying that this is offensive to their religion …. they were invited to leave the school and the country.

BTW, this IS what is meant by Secularism – complete separation of religion and the state.

I trust that my children, at least, will get to see a truly secular India.
