Bangladesh and the criminal-“jihadi” nexus
I came across this rather worrying bit of news a few weeks ago but missed posting it until today:
“CBI gets Dhaka’s most wanted list”
“…KOLKATA: Interpol has intimated the CBI about a list of as many as 23 notorious Bangladeshi criminals……According to intelligence reports, more than 20 other wanted criminals have sought shelter in India…CID officers admitted that criminals from across the border had found shelter in West Bengal and were maintaining links with elements in their own country. They even arrested eight of them, including Joy and Harris Ahmed, kingpin of the dreaded ‘Harris Bahini’ of Dhaka.
…Many of these dons have started their own business in West Bengal and are now owners of bheris or transport companies.”
Just ten days aftert the news report above (dt. 12th June ’07), the Mumbai Mirror (dt 22nd June 07, Pg 14) reported that “Harris Ahmed was arrested by CID’s special oepration group in North 24-Parganas, on the fringes of Kolkata. He was wanted for at least 40 murders and dozens of extortion cases in Bangaldesh. Interpol had issued a red corner notice against him..”
Amazingly, “Posing as an Indian, Harris Ahmed ran a garment business and had a ration and a PAN card.” !!
What worried me was not just the fact that some of “most wanted” criminals from Bangladesh found shelter in this country…but the real possibility – I would say almost a certainty that some – or most – of these people were involved in drugs smuggling, arms smuggling and illegal immigration from across the border.
And if that is not worrying enough, do not forget that there is increasing evidence of terrorist elements within India now collaborating very actively with various groups and outfits in Bangladesh who share a similar “jihadi” ideology.
For example, see “RDX imported from Bangladesh?” which mentioned that an analysis of the bombs found in Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad revealed “The explosive material, RDX and TNT, are not available in India and were imported from Bangladesh.”
In addition, “…The SIM card on the cellphone attached to these bombs was purchased in Kolkata”.
Very worrying.
