Communal Reservations via the back door?

How many of you noticed this piece of “news” from about 2 months ago (emphasis added)?
The Centre is proposing to introduce reservation for Muslims in educational institutions and employment on the lines of Andhra Pradesh government, Union Minister for Law and Justice Salman Khursheed indicated in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Talking to reporters here after participating in a ‘Solidarity Meeting on Palestine’ organised by the Indo-Arab League here, he said: “I don’t know whether it is a Bill. There will be separate reservation. It is not necessary to have another Bill. It …

On Islamism, unspeakable truth and Jews..

Thanks to Jay for the link to this talk by Tarek Fatah. In this 15-odd minutes video, he talks of Islamism, the truth that dares not speaks its name & how it starts with the Jews…
As Jay mentioned in his email, this is
A really thought-provoking analysis of Islamic terrorism by  a Canadian of Indian origin, who also happens to have been born as a Muslim.. A self-proclaimed and critical Marxist.
His honesty and sincerity about the religion of his birth are something that Indian Marxists should try and emulate. What we have …

Losing sleep over communal violence and hate propaganda

Yes, I was in digital detox slumber..but the worthies at NAC managed to wake me up.  Below , collated readings on the Communal Violence Bill, proposed by the NAC. Do read and worry.  And add “hate propoganda” and attempts to destroy “secular fabric” of the nation to “scandalous information about high-profile people” and other such things you should worry about if you write a blog or say/write anything in public… The signs are not good..not good at all…
To start off, excerpts from Sh Arun Jaitley’s commentary on why the communal violence …

Afzal Guru, a new process and a certain “secular” party

Very hurried post but getting this out since it has been bothering me since morning. First a bit of background (emphasis added)…

The Supreme Court had in January 2006 dismissed Guru’s appeal against the death sentence after which he filed a mercy petition. A convict on death row can seek clemency from the President, who acts on the cabinet’s advice to arrive at a decision. The plea is processed by the home ministry.
Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on February 23, home minister P Chidambaram had said Guru’s plea had …

Cameron, muscular liberalism and a sense of deja vu…

I woke up this morning to this statement by David Cameron, Prime Minister of Great Britain. Speaking at a conference in Germany, he said (emphasis added):
Frankly, we need a lot less of the passive tolerance of recent years and much more active, muscular liberalism

He went on to say:
Let’s properly judge these organisations: Do they believe in universal human rights – including for women and people of other faiths? Do they believe in equality of all before the law? Do they believe in democracy and the right of people to elect their …

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO, it is an “illegal religious structure”*

Some of you may remember this tweet from barbarindian yesterday in which he referred to this report by PTI on the demolition of an “illegal” religious structure:
..Police on Wednesday lobbed teargas shells and used force to disperse scores of people protesting the demolition of an “illegal” religious structure in south-east Delhi…“A number of people gathered at the area police station and marched towards the demolition spot. They were prevented from entering the spot. They broke the barricades and tried to enter the premises. We had to resort to lobbing teargas …

Why equating radical Islam with “Hindutva Terror” is dumb, stupid and dangerous

Sadanand Dhume explains it well. A brief excerpt below (emphasis added):
Simply put, the notion that the radical Hindu threat to India is comparable to that posed by radical Islam is ludicrous. First there’s the question of scale. Alleged Hindu terrorists—not one of whom has been convicted—are accused of bomb blasts in 2007 and 2008 in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra that killed 17 people. According to the South Asia Terrorism Portal, the toll in India from about two dozen radical Islamic terrorist attacks since …

Being “scarily bonkers” and “flirting with rabid sentiments”

Once again, M J Akbar says it like only he can:
The Urdu paper theory is, in brief, that 26/11 was organised to kill Hemant Karkare, a brave police officer, because he was on the verge of exposing Hindu zealots. This implies that Hindu zealots came to a deal with the Lashkar-e-Taiba, whose leader Hafiz Saeed was so delighted that, with the help of ISI, he armed and trained 10 young men, and sent them on Jihad to India so that Hindu zealots might be protected!
I …

So it was not about “Kashmiriyat”?

The majority of our people are Muslims. How can we not talk of Islam?

I can’t help wondering – what happened to the famed “Kashmiriyat”?
