An Open Letter to Mahesh Murthy on the finer points of History & Hinduism…

Dear Mahesh: We have not met before so pardon the impertinence (& the presumptuous nature) of this open letter. I was prompted to write this after reading your recent post on Why do so many of us love Modi?.

You began your post with “some hygiene issues”. In that vein, here are mine: Like you,  I’m not getting paid to do this. And like you, I’d love to be paid to blog! More importantly, I am not associated with the BJP, nor with the Sangh (although I am a supporter of both). My specific concern are a few remarks in point #6 of your post. These are not only inaccurate but also misleading and possibly insulting/ demeaning (e.g. reference to a certain “idiot” and a “silly chant“).

Let me reproduce the bits that I felt were off the mark:

…Maybe Modi-love is really about Hindus taking revenge centuries after the Mughals screwed us over.

…Being gay is a crime. So forget about Section 377 being repealed in the BJP tenure.

Women being equal to men cannot be tolerated, because that idiot Manu said so in his Smriti. The country can’t eat beef, because of some silly chant like “gaai hamaari maata hai”, even though were were traditionally a beef-eating country.

…Modi’s rise started only after the direct support, shielding and protection of the Hindus who killed over a 1,000 innocent Muslims in Gujarat.

…as though being secular is sick. Dude, it’s in our constitution.

Allow me to dissect these lines one by one. The first about, “..Hindus taking revenge centuries after the Mughals screwed us over.” is not quite true. Neither the bit about “revenge” nor the bit about “Mughals screwed us over“.  I would recommend this short piece to you, “The Myth of 1000 years of Hindu Slavery“, from which this excerpt is worth reproducing:

“When examining our history I saw a spirit of defiance stretching over a thousand years in the face of implacable and merciless enemies, who put an end to many other cultures and civilisations. The same forces which had overcome virtually every indigenous civilisation in the world had thrown their entire might against India – and failed.

Attack after attack was defeated. Horrific massacres did not force the people to abandon their religion and identity. The destruction of holy places did not see dharma die but rise again and overcome their opponents with the power of truth. The banner of freedom was raised generation after generation…

…Ancient faiths like Buddhism and Zoroasterism were almost obliterated from the Middle East, Central Asia and India but the Hindus rose in defiance to emerge even stronger at the end of the blood soaked millennia.”

Next the bit about “..Being gay is a crime. So forget about Section 377 being repealed in the BJP tenure.”  As I mentioned before, I am neither a member of BJP nor in any position to advise them on what they should – or should not – do. But I felt I should share with you the fact that Hinduism has a long history of not only tolerance but even acceptance of homosexuality. In this context, pl do have a look at this post, “Homosexuality, Hinduism and Section 377” when you have a few minutes.

As for “Women being equal to men cannot be tolerated, because that idiot Manu said so in his Smriti.”, I would request you to read the 2-part series on “Women in Hinduism” and “Re-examining Manusmriti“. These are long posts but they might make you change your mind.

On the matter of “…some silly chant like “gaai hamaari maata hai””, can I please ask you to read this post on cow slaughter? It may help you understand why so many of us have such strong feelings about something that is after all, just another “animal”.

On “..killed over a 1,000 innocent Muslims in Gujarat.”, not sure where you got the figure for  “1,000 innocent Muslims“. In May 2005, MoS (Home), Sriprakash Jaiswal mentioned in Rajya Sabha that 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed in the riots in Gujarat in 2002 that followed the burning of a train coach killing 59 “innocent Hindus” . I would like to think that each one of them – Hindu and Muslim – was innocent.

As for “secular” being  “in our constitution”, you are right but I am not sure whether you (& your readers) realise this was actually pushed down our throats during the Emergency by Smt Indira Gandhi. This does not make it a redundant concept but I think it is important to be clear about this. It may surprise you that the term has not been defined in the Constitution.

Finally, you make a reference to “Hindu Sharia” in your post which is odd since I am sure you realise it can never exist (and is an oxymoron). Unlike Abrahamic religions, “Hindus” do not share/have a common “God” (or “Goddess”) or a single/common “Holy Book” or a single/common set of “Dos and Don’ts”.  Any talk of Hindu Sharia is therefore at best irresponsible, at worst, a deliberate attempt at scare-mongering.

I am happy to be corrected & challenged on any/all the points mentioned above and I do hope you take this response in the right spirit. I shall look forward to your comments & thoughts.  With best regards,

    Dear Shantanu,

You have made a good point.
I had not read Mahesh’s post before. He has written like a blind politician. From whatever he has written itself, we can make out that, he neither reads history, nor knows about Hindu culture/tradition/society. He has prejudiced opinions and the only intention of his post is to denigrate Hindutva and Modi!
It will be good, if he comes for a discussion.

    Thanks,
    Narendra

    Dear Shantanu,
I really appreciate your your endeavours to single handedly combating these neo confused secular people those have created an aura of authority to bash Hindus with imaginary destructive articles.
I congratulate you for this excellent response.
    Best Wishes,
    Pramod

After scanning thru Mr Murthy’s blog, I got a feeling that he is a compulsive liar & adept in twisting facts like our Media traders are used to. I take strong objection on his qualifying Manu with the adjective idiot. I challenge him to use that word for any Islamic mythological figure. If he still lives after that, I wld accept each of his falsehood and follow his idea of secularism.

  6. Sanjana says:

Mahesh was a signatory to the letter by folks opposing when Manmohan Singh made a statement in Rajya Sabha that Modi had done nothing that US should ban his visa.So his bias goes long. He will obviously not tell you.

  7. Prakash says:

Could you please tell us who mahesh murthy is and why it is at all important to take note of him? Or about getting paid? I could not figure out much from this entire post. Was that blog written by a man or a wolf?

  8. Sharika says:

Read Breaking India by Rajeev Malhotra. You will realize in your own which parts are bull shit

  9. Anirudh says:

    Hey Shantanu,

Good one. Do not bother about Murthy. If you have noticed his previous tweets or blogs, they are just about tying to gather some attention and usually lack substance.

I advice him to sticking to funding mundane & listless websites

I appreciate the effort of Satyameva Jayete.. in their pursuit to fight the embodiment of ignorance, arrogance, falsehood and foolishness..

Whoever this chap Mahesh Murty is seem to have no regard for truth and hence no point in trying to enlighten them with facts.

Although, it is a disgrace to one’s intellect to even spend a second discussing this man or his crappy writings.. I’m doing it because.. I thought it is important for these kind of jackasses needs to be tld.. what they are..!

well the problem with most english speaking INdians is that they learn thier history from News channels, Unfortunately in this country its a sin to learn the real history of india, socialists like Romila Thapar and communists from bengal have dominated educations since Nehru time, Nehru Himslef was an apologetic hindu and thus there was a generation of Indians educted in 40 . 50 and 60 wore secularism very proudly on their sleeves..
I am not suggesting that as Indians we should g back to 5000 year old rituals , but as INdians we must know what is Rig Veda, Sam Veda , etc, what is manusmriti, we need to know whr we come from,
Regarding Muslim bashing som eintellectuals like VS Naipaul have mentioned that breaking of Babri msjid was a cathartic exp for all Indians including muslims and thus we have now started okking back at our past which is common for muslims and Hindus, for god sake 90% are converted at some stage…
I have traved to countries where Abraham s religion just destroyed the past and these countries could never recover, the Middle east , Philippiness, Latin Anerica, we are lucky that we atleast knowo our past our names are stilll tahe same for ast 5000+ years,
I wish we do not continue to play this muslim bogey asny longer, Gujrat was a riot and not a pogram like people mention and people dnt vote for modi because he is allegedly a fascist they vote for him becuase he is a good administrator…

Thanks Shantanuji for your rebuttal. Please ignore the people who are not willing to have an open view. They want to be biased and let them be

Please see the below video – it exposes AAP – lots of ex-AAP members esp founding members are part of this video.

  13. Shambu Nashipudi says:

Mahesh is ‘Sanjay Jha’ when it comes to blogging …
and the way out is to ignore these perennial Modi haters.

And Shantanu, the article and the links are very informative. The likes of Mahesh and Sanjay Jha will never subside, infact the tribe will increase with Modi’s ascent.

  14. Prakash says:

I like that last tweet ‘Arr Bhai’. Rather similar to the Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai slogan of a famous leader. It is so very Indian.

  15. Prakash says:

I notice that you have deleted my last comment. For a good reason, too.

I had posted it for a purpose. It was to point out to you that you are in control of this blog and you have the ultimate right to delete a comment, or a post, or the whole blog if you thought any of those actions were proper.

Now, I have a request. Since you refused to write any material introducing this person Mahesh Murthy, I did a bit of duckduckgo-ing (This is an alternative to google. It is a little less intrusive than google, at least at the moment) and found out that he is a college dropout who made his money and fame in advertising and a few other business activities. Perhaps that is why you feel a certain closeness to him (samaan sheelvyasaneshu sakhyam).

Please consider the possibility that he is paid to right against Modi and that his tweeted opinion might merely be a part of the advertising campaign. You do not have to give a free platform to that advertising and call him bhai and all that. You are the owner of the blog. Please go ahead and delete all the portions of this article except the links you gave to explain your point of view.

    Will you do that, please?

  16. B Shantanu says:

Dear All: Hurried response to various comments:
@Narendra (#1): Agree that it is very likely that Mahesh has not taken the pains to click on any of the links I have included above..Like you, I do hope he is willing to discuss/debate.

Shenai-ji, Ajay & Dada: Thanks for your kind words..

@JS: I don’t think he has “twisted” facts. I doubt he is even aware of them.

    @Sanjana: That’s interesting..I was not aware of that…

@Prakash: A simple google/duckduckgo search (or even a look at some of Mahesh’s posts on fb) wld have yielded the answers you were looking for..

@Sharika: I am aware of “Breaking India”.

@Anirudh: I still feel that sometimes such folks need to be challenged.

    @Chandra: Thanks..

    @Rohit: Good points..

@Prasad: Thanks..I have seen the video..

@Shambu: Thanks..Glad you found the links informative.

@Prakash: I think its better for the text to stay (for the record)..

  17. Prakash says:

Can I request you to delete all my postings/comments on this website?

  18. Prakash says:

I will explain why. The only reason you have taken cognizance of some Mahesh Murthy is that (it seems, on the face value) he is Rich and posh. There is no evidence he has given any thought to what he wrote nor has he bothered to look at what you have written. What you had displayed is a classic slave mentality. I am sure you would not respond to every tweet by every person in similar fashion. (You did not respond to my request for clarification, for example). Leads me to the conclusion that Wealth and Fame are your prime metrics, not truth or propriety.

That you chose to ignore my post #8 above confirms the above. You could as well have asked Mahesh to google and do more research. You could have exposed his lack of formal education.. You could have shown some spine in your tweet-battle. (You can do that even now. Tell him he is uneducated.) You must also remember that facebook and twitter are just some platforms from USA. A nationalist like you should not assume that everyone is happy to visit those platforms every now and then. China, for one example, has developed its own. Sad are those nationalists who believe that India cannot have its own.

As you well know, I am not a fan of any particular leader or a party, however, I don’t appreciate the theatrics of the wolf-pack. I am for a healthy, critical, vigorous debate, not for such abject surrender to wealth and fame like you have spinelessly displayed…
