The Great Joke that is Indian Media – Part XVII

In which a “leading” media organisation drops all pretence of unbiased reporting…

Courtesy Jnsbmi, here is a ToI story (emphasis added). Notice the headline and the tweet in which it was mentioned:

Gujarat accounts for 6% of India’s dubious bank transactions

Nov 2, 2011, 12.46AM IST TNN [ Ankur Jain ]

Gujarat has generated the fourth highest number of reports relating to dubious banking transactions in the last four financial years, according to a govt report.

AHMEDABAD: There is something more than that meets the eye with financial transactions in the state. According to a recently released report buy union finance ministry’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Gujarat has generated the fourth highest number of reports relating to dubious banking transactions in the last four financial years in the country.
Out of the total 17,209 dubious transactions reported across India in four financial years from March 2006 to March 2010, Gujarat accounted for around 1,032 or 6 per cent of the country. However, the only silver lining is that the state is way behind Maharashtra, which leads the pack of such transactions with 29 per cent, Delhi with 12.1 per cent and West Bengal with 7.3 per cent.

    The new head of the Press Council of India and former Supreme Court justice Markandey Katju eviscerated the Indian media. He actually questioned their intellectual caliber and called them divisive. Those who frequent this blog already have a low opinion about the self righteous screaming banshees and dalals of the media. However it is good to get reinforcement from a Judge of Katju’s integrity and erudition. The learned Judge said:

    “He admitted he had “a poor opinion of the media,” arguing that it was “not working for the interest of the people” and “sometimes they are positively working in an anti-people manner.”

    Not surprisingly, the ‘editors’ are up in arms. However, looking at the response of readers to WSJ article the aam citizen is very supportive of the PCI chief and contemptuous of the ‘Press’. Surely the people are waking up to facts.

    Here is another gem from rediff. Just see the paragraph peppered with “suggest”, “may have been”, “apparently”. After nearly three years all the NIA could come up with conjectures. We the tax payers are feeding the ???? of NIA instead of feeding the impoverished, undernourished poor.

    I think these Muslim youth were implanted with some device by long murdered Sunil Joshi which automatically disappeared after the blasts.

    “Latest investigations into the Malegaon 2006 blasts point to certain leads which suggest that while the blasts may have been the brainchild of a group of right-wing Hindu extremists, its execution was done by hired Muslim boys who apparently did it for the money.”

    I don’t know when the stupid Hindus will learn. There is nothing to celebrate at all in the statement of the CJI. The main reason was that the media throws out few minority organizations’ names whenever there is a terror act as if all of them are part of it. This exactly was the cause of his outpour against them and nothing else. In fact in the same interview he mentioned that this nation is the land of all kinda immigrants. He is a full marxist bred person having a Hindu name.

    Namaste !! Shantanu ji ,

    First of all congrats that u r doing a wonderful work ,pardon me But u might have no idea that the work u r doing is the need of this country & 99% people of Bharat who r patriotic But misguided by media. I have gone through ur many blogs & they r great & one thing is sure that u love true history & ready to accept it & find it, u love Bharat & Bhartiyta that is nothing but based on Hindu Dharma ,Please continue the noble work we are with you .We are happy that there r many Patriots & Scholars, now understanding the need to rewrite the History .We have to strongly fight those who want to destroy History further (ex Salman Khurshid’s play Sons of Babar).

    Today 99% people need these 2 cause :-
    1)Rewrite the History & counter attack to anti nationals ,anti Hindu Historians by giving well research work & proof.
    2) Exposing media (Foreign Funded,biased,anti Hindu,Anti national)

    You are doing both very well here ,

    Here is one biased news of today regarding the murder in gujrat please go through it How this paid agents brainwashing the people & working for Congress.

    (This comment is a general comment on the series on media, not about this particular post.)

    Compare your impressions with the following from a book on ‘bad science’. The title of the chapter is ‘how the media promote the public misunderstanding of science’. I will quote a few sentences. “…but there is an attack implicit in all media coverage of science: in their choice of stories, and the way they cover them, the media create a parody of science……..”

    My point is simple. Indian media are as good or as bad as other media. The debate about media could be carried out at a much higher level and probably needs to be carried out in the parliament, a process that is under way in UK.

    Unfortunately, the posts here are so one-sided that they easily beat the bias ‘Indian media’ displays by miles. After all, this blog is a part of ‘Indian media’ itself.

  10. B Shantanu says:

    @Prakash: Re. “..the posts here are so one-sided that they easily beat the bias ‘Indian media’ displays by miles“, you would expect them to be one-sided, is it not – since I am exposing the “bias”?

    Or are you expecting me to “balance” each such post about the bias with another which appears free of bias?!

  11. Prakash says:

    There are many ways to highlight a bias. One is by saying there is a bias as you are doing, an approach that is always open to being dubbed a biased approach itself.

    Second approach could be to provide a contrast. For example, I have noticed that NDTV is doing a lot of promotionals for Mr. Advani at the moment. If you pointed that out (as you always seem to do when they promote Rahul Gandhi), I would have thought that the posts were party-neutral. There are other ways to set the contrast. One doesn’t have to do anything in particular, the unbiased approach is often self-evident.

    As of now, I get the feeling this blog is extremely biased, far far more biased than any news channel or paper that I have read. My feelings will change if I see a few posts that indicate otherwise. (I respect you for what you DO, but that is beside the point when we are discussing a bias).

  12. Malavika says:

    @Prakash,
    “Unfortunately, the posts here are so one-sided that they easily beat the bias ‘Indian media’ displays by miles. After all, this blog is a part of ‘Indian media’ itself.”

    Pointing out factual errors is not one sided. Facts remain facts. 6 < 26, 6< 12, 6<7.3, TOI missed this crucial fact and so are you.

    Perhaps you can point out factual errors in the bog and also in the readers responses to bolster your contention that this blog is more biased than TOI or IE.

    One can editorialize as much as they want how ever a journalist must present facts, indulging in Suppressio Veri is dishonest.

  13. Malavika says:

    @ Prakash,

    “My point is simple. Indian media are as good or as bad as other media”

    This is a bland assertion devoid of any evidence. My counter examples

    (i) Any news about our Queens health, the coverage is quite reminiscent of fascist communist states. That is complete non coverage. How about coverage of Mr Vadra, who got un secured loans from a realty company.

    (ii) Coverage of PC role in 2 G.

    (iii) Compare and contrast the media treatment of Yedurappa Vs Sheila Dixit/Digambar Kamat

  14. Salil says:

    I don’t see why such a fuss should be made about the ToI article. It is from the Ahmedabad edition’s city news page which obviously will highlight the Gujarat interest in national news articles.

  15. ACH says:

    @Salil: What abt the tweet??

  16. Salil says:

    @ACH: You mean the ToI tweet? It is a bot which simply tweets the headline and links to the article.

  17. Manish says:

    @Salil,

    Lets not try to trivialize this report. The day this article was published it was on the front page of http://www.timesofindia.com and was displayed very prominently.

    Until now the reporting of this news paper targeted and tarnished Modi, but this article went over the board by tarnishing the people of Gujarat. This I feel is serious issue and either the TOI should issue an apology and cease and desist from such act or face the consequence of people enmasse boycotting their news paper.

  18. Salil says:

    @Manish:
    Although I don’t see how the people of Gujarat have been tarnished in that article, there are many more better reasons why ToI should NOT be read by anyone. Personally I would any day prefer boycotting (I don’t subscribe to it anyway) to demanding an apology for one article.

  19. Indian says:

    @Manish
    I agree…tarnising of Gujarat and Gujarati people goes on and on. They will not let community ito live in peace.

    Ahmedabad: Godhra riot witness attacked, killed
    CNN-IBN | 05-Nov 09:41 AM
    Ahmedabad: A witness of the 2002 Godhra riots was attacked and killed in Ahmedabad on Saturday morning. The witness, Nadeem Sayyed, was attacked by unidentified persons in Johapura area of Ahmedabad.

    Sayyed, a Congress worker, was declared brought dead by the hospital. The Ahmedabad crime branch has now taken up the case and will probe Sayyed’s murder.

    He had testified in court in the Naroda Patiya massacre case. Sayyed was also a police informer and had rallied for a ticket in the recent civic body polls.

    Sayyed had filed several PILs in the Gujarat High Court over sanitation issues in the Johapura area and had been a witness in the Godhra riots case.

    He had also filed cases against several political leaders in the state.

    Sayyed was known for filing numerous PILs and RTIs on civic issues. He had been brutally assaulted by local goons last year.

    Now..READ the real story which only Gujarati and Gujarat knows.

    Ahmedabad, 5 November, 2011

    Nadim Saiyad, a friend of media persons and police, a cow protector, an outspoken reveler with great knowledge about inside activities of Ahmedabad’s Muslim ghetto Juhapura, a sincere ground worker was killed today morning brutally in Juhapura when he was going to buy newspapers.

    Though larger portion of media is highlighting Saiyad’s murder as murder of 2002 riot case witness, the fact according to initial probe and version of Saiyad’s father – who has lodged complaint – is that the murder is in connection with Saiyad’s activity of protecting cows.

    Saiyad’s father has given specific names of local Muslims likely to be responsible for Saiyad’s murder in his police complaint. Police believe that Kalu Gardan can be behind Saiyad’s murder. Police have held five in this case.

    Nadim’s murder could be in connection with recent incident in which local butchers burnt police jeep and injured couple of policemen who were doing duty of rescuing cows illegally kept for slaughter. Police arrested six butchers in this case. While a local group of butchers and their supporters was against police, Nadim Saiyad on the other side was pro-police and opposed illegal transportation and slaughter of cows.

    While Nadim Saiyad was active in Juhapura for last many years against illegal activities, it is understood that his last campaign against butchers and illegal cow slaughter caused his brutal murder today.

    Ahmedabad police’s Crime branch is investigating the case.

  20. CC says:

    Thanks for bringing this to light Shantanu. I’m sure there are several left-wing readers here lurking about shaking their heads in disapproval that we’re somehow defending ‘corruption’ in Gujarat whereas it is these fundamentalist pseudo-seculars who are obsessed with ‘development’ in Gujarat and expect Gujarat to be a sterile state while all of the Conress rules states are steeped in corruption and scams.

  21. Malavika says:

    Here is another instance of media skullduggery.

    The talk show Face The Nation (FTN) had a live panel discussion, the panelists included Sri Sri Ravishanker. The problem is that Sri Sri was never present, instead CNN-IBN (hostess Sagarika Ghose) spliced an earlier pre recorded interview with Sri Sri into the panel. No wonder the whole show appeared bizarre even with the low EL MAfia standards.

    Now Ms Ghose claims that:

    “My many apologies to all.The ‘recorded’ bug was inadvertently dropped on Sri Sri’s interview, but I assure you the questions were the same”

    That is absolute nonsense, she is trying to wiggle out of clear case of media malfeasance. In US Dan Rather was forced out of his news caster position because he used unreliable/unauthentic papers. In India the media is corrupt to the core and has no ethics. There is no way a spliced media can get into the program without the knowledge of Anchor. And don’t expect any heads to roll.

    Would it be possible to get info about funding sources of CNN-IBN, NDTV through RTI?
