466 years of backlog, junk food and over-reach

Nanopost of the day…

in which a High Court with 466 years of backlog of cases will now also monitor sale of “junk food” near schools and other educational institutes, potentially worsening (and adding several more years to) an already creaking system.

Sigh.

  1. It is more exciting for a judge to talk about reducing obesity in others than to disclose the reality of his own incompetence. With the fat tax in Denmark, though, and with a few other European nations likely to follow suit, expect paternalists in India to want to change people’s behaviour through the law.

No more eating jalebis from now on. The food police is out in full force now. See my ongoing notes here: http://sabhlokcity.com/2010/10/food-police-here-stop-dont-put-that-in-your-mouth/

Shantanuji, the judge is not bothered about schools which are being used for nefarious activities, but worried about junk food. Maybe some MNC wallah’s whose food outlets are not attracting the crowd they expect, increasing their bottom line, dont want the road side food joints & rather Bharatiya traditional food. They will go out to any extent to ensure extinction of our culture & values…Jai Bharat…Vande Mataram

Another day, another bad law in the making..
Ban sought on junk food in schools by MADHUR TANKHA, 23rd Apr 2014:
..The Centre for Science and Environment Director-General, Sunita Narain, has demanded that all junk food be banned from unaided and private schools across the country. Food high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) should not be available in educational institutions and within 500 yards of them.

This matter refuses to go away…
Apparently Maneka Gandhi is now getting into the act and planning a proposal to ban junk food in schools across the country http://j.mp/1ne5IJT
Many of you may not know that the idea is not new.
    And it will not work.
The reason is simple…(and captured in the title of the post I wrote on this in 2011)..
And think why is it that our leaders’ instinctive reaction to any issue or problem is to think of a new law or propose a ban…
Apparently the court that is hearing the petition mentioned above has asked “FSSAI (Food Safety & Security of India) to come out with comprehensive guidelines for regulating sale of junk food and aerated drinks in and around school premises in the country ..
