Pl watch and weep for these children..

Then take a pledge to spend at least 30mins every week to do something to improve the eduaction standards of a young child (or ideally, a few children) near your home or work-place).

Together, we can Reclaim India – the India where literacy rates were higher than Britain just 200 years ago…Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!

Dhanyavaad Shantanuji for highlighting this issue, its simple pathetic the way education is in our country. One one end of the spectrum are the elite schools, where the parents their ward finish their assignments with the help of home tuition & being ‘helpful’ to their wards teacher. One the other end of the spectrum, the Govt. run schools shortage of teaching staff & even if the staff is available they do not seem to have time to attend the school to teach kids. Its quite pathetic situation for the kids, even the ones who are interested to learn get depressed due to the peer pressure to score marks. As you rightly mentioned, if each one of the educated mass try to spend atleast 2 hours every week to help interested group of kids, this would be a divine service. Jai Bharath Vande Mataram

I am sure there are 1000s of Indian professionals around the world who would love to volunteer their time to teach our kids via long-distance video classrooms and similar technologies. How feasible is this?

cricfan, discount ppl who are abroad, they dont have the time nor the attitude to teach the kids

Is it shortage of teaching staff or inadequate remuneration? You cannot run the schools by volunteers. It is a question of funding and administration. Perhaps incompetent or corrupt people running the systeme. We can keep boasting about how well educated we were 200 years ago but that is not goping to help resolve the problem.

    Here’s a comment: http://sabhlokcity.com/2011/08/graphic-evidence-of-the-results-of-corruption-destruction-of-our-childrens-future/

This is a typical outcome of corruption. An outcome that most of us don’t know about since it takes place deep inside villages.

Thanks Ranganaathan-ji…I agree with you…Even small efforts like an hour or two a week can make a difference. I have recently started coaching some students in English conversational skills over the internet since last month.

Please let me know if you or anyone else can spare an hour a month for this..(I want the youngsters to talk to different people all the time to get more exposure and gain confidence) – no preparation required. Only an internet connection and Skype

@Morris: The 200-year reference was not to boast. It was to remind everyone that we have the capability..we just need the will.

@Sanjeev: Thanks for the link. Great post…

@All: Pl do read Sanjeev’s post to understand why contributing a few hours of time every week are at best “feel-good” measures but wont fundamentally alter anything..

I live in the UK and have a 5 year old son who is learning to spell. Fact is that english is an extremeley stupid language and all spellings have to be memorised by heart. as opposed to hindi, hindi is nice and easy the alphabets pronounce the way they ahould and words can be spelled as they are pronounced. Lets not mock. We must join together and promote our national language first. English should be second priority at all times.

    Hi Shantanu,

I can definitely spare an hour a month. I might suck to begin with but with more sessions I do, I am confident that I can get better.
