www.EmpoweringIndia.org is an award winning initiative of Liberty Institute. The goal is to make democracy more meaningful, by providing access to information, encouraging active citizenship, promoting transparency, and improving understanding of the electoral/ political processes in India.
This web platform allows citizens to access information about candidates and constituency, contesting state assembly and parliamentary elections. The objective is to empower the citizens with information, and enable them to hold the elected representatives accountable, thereby contributing to building a more vibrant and responsive democracy.
To help coordinate the activities related to the forthcoming elections, we are looking for a person who is interested in Indian politics and concerned about the need to strengthen Indian democratic institutions. The person need to have the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences including the media, political parties, election officials, candidates contesting for the elections, citizens’ organizations and others. Applicants must be proficient in English, possess good computer and internet skills. The work will involve:
  • Identifying relevant information, ways of accessing and processing the data;
  • Building and sustaining an in house team of core people;
  • Introducing the initiative to senior election officials, and seeking their cooperation;
  • Coordinating the activities of people and partner organisations carrying out the different tasks during elections;
  • Building a wider network of active citizens;
  • Showcasing this initiative to political parties and candidates contesting in elections, and encouraging them to provide information proactively;
  • Communicating with the media, providing relevant information, and disseminating to wider audiences

The position is based in Delhi. The current duration of the assignment is 3 months which could be extended if mutually acceptable. The person needs to be able to take up the assignment at the earliest, by March 15, 2011. The remuneration could be in the range of of Rs 30-35,000 per month, but it can be negotiated, based on capabilities and experience of the applicant.
