Is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO, it is an “illegal religious structure”*

Some of you may remember this tweet from barbarindian yesterday in which he referred to this report by PTI on the demolition of an “illegal” religious structure:

..Police on Wednesday lobbed teargas shells and used force to disperse scores of people protesting the demolition of an “illegal” religious structure in south-east Delhi.
..
“A number of people gathered at the area police station and marched towards the demolition spot. They were prevented from entering the spot. They broke the barricades and tried to enter the premises. We had to resort to lobbing teargas shells and using some force,” a senior police official said.

Today morning, I woke up to this headline from The Hindu:

Now an innocent mind might wonder what was this “religious structure” and who were the protestors? If you were a certain bent of mind, you may be forgiven in concluding that these are fanatic Hindus at work – again. After all, had not something like this happened recently?? …and then someone might jump in and say:

this has been happening not just in India, but abroad too…just look at Pakistan – and Malaysiaand some of them even had the cheek to file a petition!

…What is this country coming to? What happened to the secular ideals of the founding fathers of the Constitution?

This must be the handiwork of the evil RSS ..and the Bajrang Dal goons…Trust the BJP to make an issue out of this…

Shameful, disgusting…I hate politics…

But trust the Internet Hindu to be the party pooper…Courtesy, Google News India, this is what actually happened:

Who were the PTI and “The Hindu” fooling? Us or themselves?  By the way, if you think this was just some harmless, non-violent protest, think again:

The Muslim protestors did not take the matter into their stride and what ensued later was mayhem. There was stone-pelting and damage to private vehicles by a huge mob that had gathered near the mosque…The police had to resort to firing tear gas shells and five policemen sustained injuries in the melee. 13 others were injured in the clash.

There is more. From The Indian Express:

At least 15 persons were injured when police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters. Thirty others were said to have sustained minor injuries.

…The demolition was completed in three hours. A crowd gathered there after that and started pelting stones on police personnel. At least 17 private vehicles were damaged. Police fired 11 tear gas shells to scatter the protesters. Five policemen were injured in the melee.

In the spirit of  a picture being worth a thousand words etc, here is a picture of the protest, courtesy AFP via The Hindu:

By way of contrast, here is a picture of another protest by members of a different religion:

I subsequently discovered that the “structure” in Jangpura has a bit of history. There have been seven attempts in the past to have it removed, without much success. From NavBharat Times, this brief extract in Hindi (I’ll try and post a rough translation in a few hours):

Wait, that is not  the end of the this. Not finished yet. How many of you read this bit of *news today? From “Temple demolished too, but silently” by Mid-Day reporters Abhishek Anand and Shashank Shekhar, this excerpt:

While the brouhaha continued in Jangpura and Nizamuddin, a temple in south Delhi had also come under the hammer of civic agencies.

The demolition squad started work in Pushp Vihar area near Saket at 11am and the process continued till 4pm.  Some protesters opposed the incident but Delhi police managed to control the situation in a short while. Some of the protestors allegedly suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Now you know, why I don’t read the newspapers…

Seems like this story is not over yet:
New Delhi: After a few hours of normalcy on Thursday, a crowd of over 100 men and women gathered at the site of a mosque in south Delhi that was demolished as an illegal structure a day earlier. They offered prayers and shouted slogans against the authorities.

Tomorrow is the day to watch, I think.

Another example of the “Religion of peace” in action. Now the media and NGO’s would claim how minorities are being trampled in India’s democracy.

  3. Sid says:

So corporate-upper-caste-Hindu nexus that has taken over this country to make the life of minority miserable has shown it’s ugly face again. Oopsss. What is the media/NGO reaction so far? Have Jholawalas uncorked Champagne bottles to forget the grief of mosque destruction yet?

Dear Shantanu – another great job on bringing this to everyone’s notice. I did see on Twitter about the mid-day report on demolition of Hindu temple. You have certainly illustrated the path in which the ELM would build on this story – link the story with Malaysia and Pakistan and browbeat the Hindu community. Newspaper Hindu has always been like this. When everything has changed in the last 30 years, but the Hindu newspaper continues to believe all their readers are foolish.

    Shantanu:
I read about this yesterday in the Pioneer which was a PTI feed. I kept looking for names but nothing showed up which would give me a clue on who was targetted until the last line which said that the Shahi Imam was to come there to offer prayers.

Good going media instead of reporting news you are making news.
Thanks Shantanu for telling us about the Hindu temple demolition and the pix of the peaceful demonstration in Karnataka.

I’m glad shantanu that you posted it. I was looking for it on the mediashame.blogspot.com . as the days have passed by this blog has become less active.

When I read the news from a twitter link @ TOI I picked up the mischief pretty quickly. For how long will this continue.

Just because Kangress is in power, this riot creating community, on the destruction of their religious structure, can go on destroying public property.
Almost always their mischiefs are pre-planned. They so quickly manage to gather hundreds of people in such a short time. Its an organised crime. Another form of terrorism.

Nature of terrorism is it has to be organised. and for this very reason ‘Hindu terror’ doesn’t exist.

    Latest update:
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit met Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari on Friday morning to defuse tension brewing over the demolition of a mosque in South Delhi. The chief minister had an hour-long conversation with the Imam where she assured that the mosque will be rebuilt in the same area.

Moral of the story: Gandhigiri only works in movies.

  8. Vivek says:

One would have expected that a responsible Chief Minister would tell the people concerned “please go to the court and get your land back. if you win, we will rebuild the mosque in its full glory”. But of course, we know that would never happen!

we can conclude only one thing from this ,THE HINDUS ARE FOOLS, they think they can live peacefully and law abiding in a violent and lawless society !!!

@Ahmad: Thanks for the link…I had a quick look. This is a hurriee comment since I am travelling…

You may have missed the main point of the post – which was the way media reports on events selectively (and euphemistically)…and the way certain “protests” are carried out..

If the Waqf Board’s case is as strong as it appears to be on your link, I am sure the High Court will take note…I will be watching this with interest…More on this later..

Any comments on the way The Hindu and PTI reported this? and on the violent protests (not to mention Shahi Imam’s gratuitous intervention)?

All: Pl note there may be delay in moderating and/or responding to comments since I am travelling over the next several days… Thank you for your patience and support, as always.

    Thought-provoking tweet from Smita Prakash:
I was doing chintan, what if its was a BJP govt in #Delhi n it had demolished an illegal mosque? Would it have been on page 2? Soch please.

    From a ToI news report:
Delhi mosque demolition: Contempt plea filed against CM, Shahi Imam
    15 Jan, 2011 1905hrs IST TNN[ Abhinav Garg ]

NEW DELHI: The Jungpura Residents Welfare Association (RWA) on Saturday moved the Delhi High Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari for allegedly instigating people to trespass and offer prayers in a government land, retaken by DDA after razing an illegal mosque. The DDA action was done after court orders.

Filing an application through counsel R K Saini, the Jangpura Residents Welfare Association (JRWA) also sought initiation of suo-motu contempt proceedings against Shoib Iqbal, MLA of Matia Mahal constituency, and Asif Mohd. Khan, MLA of Okhla Area, besides the CM and Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid.

The RWA in its contempt plea alleged that the CM and Shahi Imam had “by their actions and words, scandalised and lowered the authority of the court, interfered with the due course of judicial process, interfered and obstructed the administration of justice and brought into disrepute the honour, majesty and authority of the law and the courts.”

According to the RWA, the structure was built “illegally” on DDA land which was earmarked for construction of a community centre.

    Brave.

  14. Prakash says:

I have a feeling religious structures – of every religious denomination – have possibly been used as a shield to encroach on public property at many places. Law will take its own course for every specific case, however, people at large will benefit only if they see through the general tactic.

  15. Abhishek says:

@Sid— its very easy to say JHOLAWALAS… for people of such mentality i remember the dialogue of No One Killed Jessica— Wahan Hote na toh…. Actually fingering is very easy… having one is painful.

  16. Sid says:

    @Abhishek (#16),
And the point is? Would you mind writing something coherent around your objection to my point? I have not seen the movie so I have no idea what the dialogue or context it.
I will continue to call them Jholawalas because that is what they are. In the west, they are sarcastically called Champagne liberals or limousine liberals, but jholawala is a term that is much closer to my heart.
