Stumbled on this yesterday in the NY Times (emphasis added):
“We started this, really, for our kids,” said Dr. Shukla, a urologist and a second-generation Indian-American. “When our kids go to school and say they are Hindu, nobody says, ‘Oh, yeah, Hindus gave the world yoga.’ They say, ‘What caste are you?’ Or ‘Do you pray to a monkey god?’ Because that’s all Americans know about Hinduism.”
The “Dr Shukla” mentioned in the article is Dr Aseem Shukla and what he is talking about is the “take Yoga Back movement..Below, some excerpts …

Another year, another anniversary – “Kuch nayee baat batao yaar”*

More than four years ago, I reproduced a post by Bibhasdas on Bharat-Rakshak on my blog…In his post Bibhasdas gave several reasons for not getting upset (following the terrorist attack in Varanasi). Amongst them, he mentioned:

These (terrorist attacks) are regular incidences now-a-days which happens almost at few months interval
State Govt has already fulfilled its duty (by announcing “compensation”)
Central Govt has done its duty (by sending Home Minister to review the situation and file report..)
Rashtrapati has done his duty; he condemed the incidence

Saluting our Heroes: Maj R Parameshwaran, PVC

From the Indian Army website:

First Shashi Tharoor, next Kathlal now Nitish Kumar and the NDA alliance…

The list is growing…Two months ago, I wrote a brief note on what was common to Kathlal and Shashi Tharoor…In the note, I said:
I’m cheering the BJP win in Kathlal for the same reason I was pleased about Shashi Tharoor’s win in Thiruvananthapuram.
Both mark a break from “politics-as-usual” and offer hope for those of us working towards breaking the stranglehold of caste, religion and vote-bank politics in India.

Today, Nitish Kumar led NDA alliance in Bihar joins this list that signals a break from “poliitics-as-usual”. This has to be good …

Remembering our Heroes – Lachit Barphukan & the Battle of Saraighat

March 1669: The Mughals, still smarting under their defeat at the hands of Ahom forces led by Lachit Barphukan two years back are not taking any chances this time. A large army of “30,000 infantry, 15,000 archers, 18,000 Turkish cavalry, 5,000 gunners and over 1000 cannons besides a large flotilla of boats” is moving up the Brahmaputra towards Guwahati. The forces are led by Raja Ram Singh, son of Raja Jai Singh, who was also a Mughal general and had fought against Shivaji, thousands of kilometers beyond – in the …
