Is this man the biggest roadblock to peace in Kashmir valley?

Continuing the series on Jammu & Kashmir, today, a little bit about Syed Ali Geelani – in my view, the single biggest road-block to any lasting peace in Kashmir valley.

First, some background. This excerpt is from a news-report dated 2008. I had filed this under “stories that don’t make it as a lead-item”. From Praveen Swami’s An Islamist’s resurrection in Kashmir (emphasis added):

In his pronouncements in recent weeks, the Islamist patriarch himself has left the world in little doubt of his ideological agenda. Speaking to the New Delhi-based journalist Aasha Khosa, Geelani called for the creation of an Islamic nizamiat, or state, in which the “creed of socialism and secularism should not touch our lives and we must be totally governed by the Koran and the Sunnat [precedents from Prophet Muhammad’s life].”

For long, Geelani has argued that Hinduism and Islam are locked in an irreducible civilisational opposition. At an October 26, 2007 rally in Srinagar, he demanded that “the people of the State should, as their religious duty, raise their voice against India’s aggression.”

I doubt if Geelani was mis-understood – or misquoted. The soon-to-be-81 year is the prime force behind the “separatist” movement and has, for years,  successfully walked the fine line between open rebellion and “protests” against the state – almost turning it into an art.

Unsurprisingly, he evokes strong feelings.

On Thursday last week (Sept 2nd), BJP Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani called him a mortal enemy of Kashmir. Jethmalani said:

He is an intentional abettor of murder. The state and central government must pick up courage and arrest Geelani and incarcerate him in some jail far away from Srinagar

The next day Farooq Abdullah, responding to Geelani’s challenge to him to repeat the speech he made in Parliament at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. said:

Why should I react to Geelani’s challenge? What’s his locus-standi and who is he?”

Although Geelani is widely believed to have received assistance from ISI and other arms of the Pakistani government over the years, we have been reduced to “taking great satisfaction” in the fact that he has previously described himself as a “senior citizen of India” (in an application form to avail himself of travel concessions).

But who is the real Geelani?

Is he the one who asks his “supporters” to make non-violence their strategy while maintaining that “Jihad” is an option to resolve the dispute in Jammu & Kashmir?

Is he the one who claims to be a Pakistani but gets himself certified as an Indian citizen to avail of benefits?

Is he the one who believes that the future of J&K is with Pakistan, but contests for assembly elections in J&K (and as an ex-MLA, also gets a pension funded by Indian taxpayers)?

Is the real Geelani someone who can be trusted?

Now, instead of thinking hard about these questions, guess what does our Government do? It goes out of its way to court him. A cursory web search reveals that successive governments have been trying since 2001 to have a “dialogue” with Geelaniwith no apparent success.

The present one continues down the same path. Instead of saying bluntly “No dialogue as long as you speak the language of Azaadi”, it bends..and keeps on bending. Instead of exploiting his apparently dwindling support base, it continues to lend him credibility by offering to talk to him. Lacking the moral courage to tackle the crisis in Kashmir and lacking the political will to call a spade, a spade, it continues to reach out to him, adding further to his “stature” amongst the stone-pelting “youth” of Kashmir valley…ignoring the fact that the “Azaadi” Geelani claims to be fighting for is not really about freedom in the true sense of the word…It is – as fellow blogger Sandeep said – the freedom to make Kashmir an Islamic state.

Make no mistake. The core issue for Hurriyat is not greater autonomy or development or peace or AFSPA or alleged “human rights” violations. The focal point of Geelani and his followers’ agenda is to somehow trigger the break-up of Jammu & Kashmir and form an Islamic state in the valley.

Let us make sure our people are made aware of this…let us make sure that the powers that be are not lulled into a false sense of security by Geelani’s calls for non-violence. Let us make sure that this man is taken out of any and all equations regarding Jammu & Kashmir. Let us make sure that he is tried for sedition under IPC Section 124A. The more we acknowledge his “hold” on the people, the more strident his stand becomes…the more we hail the “shifts in his stand“, the more intractable the problem becomes.

Sadly, none of this is likely to happen… So we’ll just have to wait – wait for a stroke of good luck – or a slow realisation of sense…or for the tide to turn….which it might just be. From a news-report last week:

Exasperated with repeated shutdowns, curfews and violent deaths, Kashmiris defied hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani‘s strike call and went about their business as usual.

I wish the residents of Kashmir valley continue with their “business as usual”. And on the off-chance that Sh Geelani is reading this, my sincere request to you Sir is: “Please realise that Azaadi will always be a non-starter in any attempt at resolving the situation in Jammu & Kashmir. It is time you step aside and give up chasing the dream. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!

Comments and thoughts welcome as always.

Latest on Sh Geelani… From ‘Keep education out of strikes’:
…Pressure is mounting on Kashmiri separatist hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani to keep education out of the purview of the continuous shutdowns and protests, which entered the 87th day on Monday.

But Geelani is in no mood to relent. He told HT that though education was a concern, students have to observe strikes whenever they are called.

    Dear Friends-

Having read through the voluminous material put together by Shantanu, I am amazed at the spineless approach towards Kashmir by successive Indian Governments.

As part of the “various options”- ludicrous as some of them may seem- we now appear to be in a situation where “azaadi”; “autonomy” etc are on the table. In the same vein, there has been an economic angle discussed- Indian State has funded Kashmir to the exclusion of its development opportunities in other states- and there was a view about “can Kashmir afford Azaadi”. It is the affordability argument that I find superfluous and here’s why: feedback welcome-

    1. Kashmir due to its location is of such geo-strategic importance that almost any “financial superpower” would love to be an arbiter of its future- any amount of money is available externally esp within the oil rich states to support the Kashmir economy- no more oil and gas deliveries around the Indian Ocean!

Kashmir is a critical issue for the Middle East, Iran, former CIS to be able to access the Chinese energy market- and China’s engagement with Pakistan on PoK, has that very pragmatic objective of energy access and security.

    2. A Kashmir without the “hassle” of having to negotiate with the Indians any more is a breakthrough for the Chinese Energy Security, indeed an opportunity to transit energy (natural gas, electricity) via Kashmir fundamentally changes the global energy geo-politics- so lets not kid ourselves that if India withdraws its financial support no one would step in to prop up Kashmir. There are multitude of institutions waiting in the wings to cough up any exit multiple that India might ask for- we even might delude ourselves in envisaging an Indian energy security enhancement angle in such an exit strategy…

    3. In such a scenario- imagine the real axis of evil- Pakistan-China-(and a Middle East/US propped up independent) Kashmir sitting atop the rest of India- does any one here really believe that this scenario would allow India to achieve its growth-peace objectives? Or shared Energy Security with China, anyone?

In the final analysis- a pure “invested capital and exit multiple approach” to solving the Kashmir problem is a hare-brained idea- to those of you in the investment world, please nip such thoughts in the bud- it is a red herring argument…

The fundamental issue is of the demographics of Kashmir following the 1989 genocide, the red line in any discussions on Kashmir surely ought to be the repatriation and rehabilitation of any Hindus (not necessarily former Kashmiri Hindus) before any dialogue with anyone could be even considered. (article 370? Anyone?)

Is an interventionist approach to re-balance the demographics to 1952 or pre 1989 levels possible? Do Hindus want to to go back to Kashmir when the world is their oyster?

Interventionist approach to re-balancing demographics may not be such a unique feature to the Kashmir valley, several contigious regions within Pakistan, PoK, Swat, Baltistan, Gilgit have “some experience” of re-balancing demographics- perhaps the Indian Government could initiate a best-practice sharing focused dialogue as a precursor to any talks…

We the people of India do not really know what we want- the problem is within. Harsh but may be true…I hope to stand corrected.

    Thanks,

    Ashutosh

Secularism world wide except India is a tool to beat Chrstianity so it fails against Islam. In India Secularism is a tool to beat Hindus so it fails against Christianity and Islam. That is the reason of existence of thugs like Jinnah, Geelani and hundred other hardline pro Pakistan Islamists who stayed in India post 1947, maybe to create more Pakistans. Indian Secularism is the reason why Missionaries achieved/ are achieving what they couldn’t during British rule in India.

  5. Sid says:

Is this man the biggest roadblock to peace in Kashmir valley?
The answer is no. The correct answer is Indian Government or more clearly, we, who have chosen them. Gilanis are the rats who wait for the opportunity. GoI has given these opportunities to him and many rats like him in various acts of unfathomable generosity (I believe it is fashionable to call stupidity by this name now-a-days).

  6. repo man says:

What Gilani is essentially trying to do is a “Gerry Adams”, launder himself from being an outright rebel into a politically acceptable figure, while still retaining enough of this rebel image to resonate with the current votership within Kashmir.

One thing to me seems certain – give kashmir autonomy and they will ask for independence. Give them independence and the Islamists will start asking for other parts of India. The Demography of (as of writing) Hindu majority Jammu has monotonically shifted in favour of Muslims in the last decade or so……….

Sid, I don’t think you can tarnish all Gilanis with the same brush. Pakistan’s prime minister, for example…..

  7. not X says:

Let us assume the mentioned person is the biggest roadblock. It follows that the road will be clear otherwise. Where is the road going? Are their any other big roadblocks? or is there no road that is going anywhere?

    Could someone please explain?

  8. Ashutosh says:

A very astute observation- repo man.

About half an hour ago Geelani has been arrested.

  9. Sid says:

    Ashutosh,
It does not matter if he is arrested. Secular would soon demand that he be released. And the secular in govt. would comply.

    Repo man,
it is not me with the brush. Gilanis and likes of him want to paint themselves and their entire clan in the same brush. I am merely agreeing to them. You know, as a Hindu (and therefore bigot) citizen of secular India, it is my duty to agree to the demands of secular Gilanis.

  10. Augusto Pinochet says:

Excellent article Mr. Shantanu….Unfortunately, the present government headed (in de-facto and covertly) by a utter useless Italian with little experience in handling this kind of problems and tackling loonies like Geelani, are unfortunately bending backwards to appease the deranged Islamist fundamentalists in Kashmir Valley.

As one blogger put forth not so long back that India is currently fighting “Fourth Battle of Panipat”. If India backs down or loses this battle, then it would mean slow death of this Indian Nation.

Also, one must note the near-unanimity of the cabinet Committee on “Security”‘s illegitimate decision to withdraw AFSPA from these areas where the violence perpetrated by the Islamist goons are maximum. The person who chaired this meeting was none other than the wife of the Rajiv Gandhi, the grandson of the main architect of Kashmir problem and the greatest “Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey” ever to rule modern India.

It is commendable to see bloggers like yourself waging a sort of a lonely “war” to expose the radical Islamist thugs like Geelani and thier secular allies in New Delhi who have a deep and a hidden agenda to bleed this country and cut it to pieces with a lil’ bit help from Pakistan and China.

Great read (HT: Acorn)…A brief excerpt from The Hate India Movement by S. Prasannarajan

They are all as free as Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the totemic anti-Indian.
…His nationality may be Indian, a technical necessity, but in the larger scheme of his freedom struggle, it is a geographical curse and a historical calamity. He utters the word India as if it is a satanic alien pitted against his fettered faith. A cursory look at his statements and numerous interviews will show how much he hates India, the occupying power, and how far will he go in his mobilisation against the oppressor. Following the Khomeinist tradition of turning news about the violation of the sacred into a holy war, he uses the rumour about the Koran-burning in America on the ninth anniversary of 9/11 as an excuse for inciting Islamic rage against defenceless infidels. As patron saint of the hate-India movement, he engineers the mind of the stone-pelting, martyrdom-seeking freedom fighters of the Valley.

We call him a secessionist, or a separatist. Why can’t we call him a terrorist and treat him like one? Is it because the Government still needs him as it struggles through all-party meet and other such serial triangulations to reach out to the people of Kashmir? Is it because he has made India-the occupying power-negotiable, and its armed forces, one of the Republic’s last institutions that have not been politicised, an item on the bargainer’s list?

The answers will reveal nothing new about the man who has declared war on India, his weaponry assembled from the freedom he enjoys as a citizen of India. He is as one-dimensional as any other terrorist.

The answers, though, reveal a lot about an India that waffles through self-defeating political correctness. That is why it can’t read the scriptural text of Geelani’s campaign. To pretend that that his struggle against his own country doesn’t have a religious adjective, that money-read development-can win the minds of the freedom fighter powered by the Book, is to abdicate your national responsibility and take refuge in the deception of reconciliation-through-concession.

And the only concession that will be acceptable to him is Kashmir’s freedom from the coloniser. Self-determination, he says. History tells us something else: it is an exclusivist god that determines in such disputes.

One of the biggest achievements of Indian democracy is that it has an amazing ability to live outside history. So we miss the point again and again, though the man who should have ideally been on the “wanted” list of the country misses nothing: the streets are erupting to his commands, the statistics of horror keep growing, and azadi is blending perfectly with jihad. He sets the agenda, and Delhi takes note. If terrorism in the post-9/11 context draws its power from the combustibility of fear and the nihilism of faith, Geelani must be the most indulged terrorist at work today. Indulged by his victim itself, and that is the overwhelming strangeness of it. Maybe it is not all that strange, considering India’s unbreakable record in harvesting terror for maximum political capital but minimum national interest…

Thanks to Jignesh for alerting me to this…From Fruit dealers, saw mills funded stone-pelting in Sopore: Police:

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday claimed to have unearthed a nexus between fruit dealers and saw mill owners, and the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference that funded stone-pelting in Sopore in north Kashmir.

“A stone-pelter, Abdul Lateef Lone, a resident of Radbough, Kupwara, who is the Imam of Jamia Masjid Amargarh, Sopore, was arrested… and during questioning he revealed that Rs 400 was being paid to every stone pelter every Friday,” Khan claimed. “The money is raised locally by Hurriyat (Geelani) cadre.”
