“Demography is destiny”, said Augustus Comte, a French philosopher of the 19th century. Demography, to use a simple definition, means the religious, cultural, or any secular, composition of a nation’s population. As the French were the first to understand the ideas of nation-state and national interest that originated in the 18th and 19th centuries, they could realise the criticality of demography to a nation-state. …

In a few hours time, I will be on my way to the North-east part of India. I will be offline for the major part of next 48 hours but hope to have some connectivity after that (fingers crossed).
Please expect some delay in responding to (and moderating) comments.
I expect to do a lot of “tweeting” during this visit as (I think) I’ve finally managed to set this up on my phone. The easiest way to follow the tweets (and the blog) is to join the Satyameva Jayate Facebook group …

An alert reader sent me this photograph of a poster put up at the Saharanpur rally (29th March) of Varun Gandhi – his first foray into UP post the elections (Thanks VS).
The slogan at the top – roughly translated – reads (emphasis added):
He is not Varun (Deity of the Sky and the Oceans) but “Aandhi” (Storm);
He is “Doosra” (i.e. second or another) Sanjay Gandhi.
I guess the BJP’s strategists need to be a bit more careful..
And for the reading pleasure of ~50% of Indians who were perhaps not even born …

Perhaps…
Actually, no – they don’t! I did not pay anyone anything to put this blog up there…the blog owes this position SOLELY to you – and your continued loyalty, encouragement and support.
A BIG Thank You, धन्यवाद, ধন্যবাদ, ધન્યવાદ, ਮੇਹੇਰਬਾਨੀ, ಧನ್ಯವಾದಳು… Sorry, this is a poor and incomplete attempt but I hope you get the general idea …

Dear All: I came across these four links in the last 30 hours – and they made my weekend (not). Together, they read like a sad – very sad – commentary on the state of affairs. You either have to be totally lacking in integrity to be blind to this level of circumstantial evidence – or completely compromised (yourself) and hence unable to do anything about it.
I will leave you to guess on which side Hon PM, Sh MMS falls. Read on. The first excerpt from More murky twists to …

I first became aware of Mata Gujri after reading a poem by my friend Gurmeet which she shared on Facebook. The poem was a tribute to Mata Gujri-ji on the occassion of Mothers’ Day. It was enough to spark my curiousity. I decided to find out more…and was not disappointed. Here – in excerpts – is the extraordinary story of Mata Gujri Ji, from the almost forgotten pages of Indian History.
In a talk Gurmeet delivered in 2004, she called Mata Gujri a perfect woman,a “Puran Istree“.
The word “Stree” originates …

or…Changing India – Step IV
In a few days’ time, I will be making my way to the land of seven sisters…one of my favourite regions of our beautiful country. I will arrive with the Monsoon…but am looking forward to return with rays of hope in my heart. This is going to be anything but a tourist trip…Over the span of several days, I will be spending lots of time trying to get a better and deeper understanding of the region.
The north-east has long been an ignored part of India. It …

Dear All: It is my pleasure to publish this extract from an article by Anupam Sarwaikar on the Indus Water Treaty (the full article can be downloaded here). In this extract, Anupam specifically talks about the current controversy, Pakistan’s false propoganda on the issue and deliberate distortion of facts. Please read and share widely.

Pakistan blames construction of Hydro electric dams on Indian side for the depletion of water levels in Indus and Chenab. The actual reasons for the water …

Last month, Hon Sh Chidambaram speaking about the national census called it the “biggest exercise since humankind came into existence“.
As many of you may know already, the enumerators working on the census are aided in their task by a “Census Manual”. Below are instructions related to Item no. 11 related to “Nationality” (Pg 25) of the Instruction Manual for filling up of the NPR Household Schedule in the Census:
Nationality for each of the enumerated person has to be asked from the respondent and recorded.
Please record the nationality of the …
