Since when did a Baptism Certificate become proof of Date of Birth?

I was alerted to this by E E* (name protected on request). Please click on the image below.
Notice anything odd?

Questions for all of you:

How does a supposedly “secular” state reconcile this contradiction?
Does this not give an unfair advantage to Christians?
What happens in case a different date of birth is recorded in the municipal/high school records from the one in the Baptism Certificate?

Comments and thoughts welcome.

Reading Pavan Varma: “we are not a parvenu civilisation”

Extracts from a thought-provoking interview of Pavan Varma by Kanchan Gupta: (emphasis added):
…“Those who have never been colonised can never really know what it does to the psyche of a people. Those who have been are often not fully aware of — or are unwilling to accept — the degree to which they have been compromised,” he writes in this book. That, in a sense, is the theme of Becoming Indian.
Pavan K Varma:…I must confess I profess a fair degree of anguish at our low threshold of satisfaction and self-congratulation. …

W’end Links: Saraswati, a 27-year war & spin doctors

Start your weekend with Sandhya Jain’s review of Prof BB Lal’s latest book which traces the continuity of Indian culture since the dawn of the Saraswati-Sindhu civilisation. Excerpts from Discovery of India by Sandhya Jain (emphasis mine):
Barely seven years after Prof BB Lal penned The Sarasvati Flows On: The Continuity of Indian Culture (2002), the defiantly-in-denial UPA has been forced to admit the existence of the Vedic Saraswati. In response to a parliamentary question, the Government revealed that a study by scientists of ISRO, Jodhpur, and the Rajasthan Government’s Ground …

“The Distinction between People and Ideologies” – Excerpts

Some of you may have already read this post from Atanu which he published in early Feb ’10. In this deeply thought-provoking and remarkably forthright post, Atanu explained his views on Islam (strong) and discussed related issues including that of Islamic terrorism. He has been kind enough to allow me to post excerpts on my blog (added emphasis is mine). Without further ado,

A quiet April

Dear All: In the next few hours, I will be leaving on a short vacation with the family. I cannot easily remember the last time I took a break…so I am looking forward to this one.

Soon after we get back, I will be on the road once again – for another 10 days or so. The blog will be a bit quiter than usual during this entire period (from now until last week of April).
I will be auto-scheduling some posts and excerpts from various articles (some *very* controversial) during this …
