Learning about “silver” on the London Underground

Saw this ad on the London Underground:

I consider myself fairly well-read but to be honest, I was not aware of the anti-bacterial properties of silver…(I am reminded – once again – of how learning is a never-ending journey!)

…and now I know why my mother prefers my daughter to eat in a silver “thaali” and drink water from a silver urn.

    Oh yes and all the chaandi ‘barak on the Indian Mithais…copper urn, etc etc. SO many other things which we dismiss as old wives tales. Sadly the white man giving it a nod makes it relevant for us.

  2. Indian says:

    Use of 5 metal urns and copper pots for drinking water was very popular in old times. Many families gave away utensils made of copper, german and 5 metals, thinking they are out of fashion. I lament how little we know about our culture and practices.

    Pfeh! How many families can afford silver plates? I certainly cannot.

    German‽

    @ Sabari

    In case if you want to know why I used the word german. My grandparents and extended families used this kind of wide bowls called german bowls which appeared silver and yellowish in colour. May be mixed metals. Now disappered.

    Is that alright.

    As fas as I know, Vedic literatures have no reference to silver and silver made utensils. Silver utensils were used not by just our grand parents, but even the earlier generations of Europe. So its nothing to do with Indian legacy I guess. Please correct me otherwise.

    Did you consider Somnath temple? looted for its gold and silver wealth. And Indian jwellery? I believe it must be Indian legacy.
    I am curious too! about what is said in scripture.

    For your information Ayurveda an Upaveda is replete with mention of Gold Silver and Copper, Lead, Zinc, Iron, and its medicinal effects. May be you have heard about Swarna Bhasma, Heerak bhasma, Loha bhasma

    That part as I know is called Rasa Shastra

    Mercury and sulphur were and are still used in bhasma preparation process.

    @Indian
    There is no denying about Indian wealth looted by foreigners. But when silver started getting extracted across the world, everyone was using to, so did Indians. So silver is probably everyone’s legacy.

    @Vikram,
    I’m aware of Gold. Do you have any reference for silver in chatur veda and upavedas, pls provide if any.

    Apparently the price of Silver is being kept low by Industrial user lobbies. India had sold Silver at these low prices in the past. The demand for Silver is high and with the dollar doldrums, Silver is a good currency to fall back on, according to people who believe in the Bible. As a nationalist, I feel India should not sell off its Silver.
