@Davis Johnson: Pongal (Makara Sankranti) is a state holiday in South India with most schools and other public services closed (i.e. banks, postal etc.). I assume it is the same in the North.

I always have respected the cultures and rituals of other countries, but I have always wanted to know, as I have had friends who were from India and recently went back...On the celebration days of Lohri and Makar Sankranti does anybody work?? Or are these holidays the same type as the USA, where people such as the postal service have the day off? Does anyone have an answer that would be great...thanks
