More on Muslim Population Growth in India…

I recently came across a small booklet written by Dr Shrirang Godbole titled, “The Explosion in non-Hindu Population“.

As the title suggests, the main theme of the book is the hyper-growth in non-Hindu populations in India. Below are some of the more startling statistics included in the book…these facts will give you a flavour of the contents.

The book starts by noting that the boycott by Hindus of the census in 1921, 1931 and 1941 (I’m not clear about the exact reasons) and the resultant misrepresentation (under-representation?) in population statistics may have led to Hindus loosing out on several important decisions related to opportunities in government and administration, political reforms and constitutional matters at the time of Partition.

But coming back to the real point, here are some highlights:

  • Of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, Muslims are in a majority in 12. Of these, 4 are in J & K, one in Lakshdweep and the rest are in Kishanganj (Bihar, 66%), Ponani (Kerala, 66%), Jangipur (W Bengal, 59%), Murshidabad (W Bengal, 58%), Manjeri (Kerala, 56%), Dhubri (Assam, 55%) , Raiganj (W Bengal, 55%). However, Muslims hold a decisive vote in anywhere between 90-100 constituencies in the country.
  • In Uttar Pradesh, politically one of the most important states, Muslims constitute more than 20% of the voting population in more than 34 Lok Sabha constituencies (of a total of 543). (Pg 18)
  • There is no demonstrable link between illiteracy (or under-development) and Muslim population as many commentators would lead us to believe. In Maharashtra, although Hindus have a lower rate of literacy (both in terms of males and females), Muslims have a higher birth rate than Hindus in every single district (Pg 22)
  • Amongst all the states in India, Assam has seen the maximum decline in Hindu population. In the 4 districts bordering Bangladesh (Dhubri, Golpara, Hailakandi and Karimganj), Muslims constitute between 52% ~ 75% of the population. Between 1991 and 2001, Muslim growth rate in Assam in was 29.3% compared to 14.8% for non-Muslims. Today, 10 out of 23 districts in Assam are Muslim majority
  • Of the 9 boundary districts in W Bengal, all except 3 have Muslim majority
  • In Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, Muslim population grew by 150% and 180% respectively. Nagaland has 16 major tribes but there has been a “new” addition in the last 10 years – “Semiyan” (persons descended from Bangaldeshi men – “Mian” and Naga women) which is a designated Muslim tribe
  • In R K Ohri’s book (“Long March of Islam – The Future Imperfect”, Manas Publications, N Delhi, pp 235, 238), Sarifa Begum has estimated that between 1981 and 1991, 14 ~ 15 million Bangladeshis illegally entered (and consequently disappeared) in India. As conclusive evidence, the population growth in boundary districts on the Indian side has consistently outpaced the growth in boundary districts on the Bangladeshi side (see table below)

Bangladeshi boundary region; Population Growth Rate
Greater Jessore and Greater Khulna: 1.97% and 1.58%
Greater Maimensingh: 1.82%
Greater Commila: 1.89%

Adjoining Indian region; Population Growth Rate
North 24 Parganas, W Bengal: 3.16%
Garo Hills, Meghalaya: 3.84%
Tripura: 3.36%

  • In 2003, George Fernandes has gone on record saying that illegal infiltration from Bangladesh into India has consistently been running at a rate of more than 1 lakh persons per year (p 235 of Sh Ohri’s book)

When will we wake up?

It’s really painful to know that this vicious circle of illigal immigration is on for last so many years and our politicians instead of doing somthing about this serious threat , are consolidating their hold on this land by converting them as their permanent vote bank.

Only God knows when will this nation awake from this deep slumber.

Can you please suggest us what ordinary citizens like us do neutralize this menace.

  4. Shantanu says:

    Atul,

Like you, I sometimes feel despondent and utterly hopeless.

However, I am as ordinary as you…then again, we are both not ordinary – ordinary people do not take the trouble of reading such articles and commenting on them.

The least we could do is to spread awareness about these issues – by sharing our concerns with others, through mass media and on appropriate platforms.
The second thing we can do is to start thinking about how we can bring fundamental change.
The current system is too rotten and decayed and has no room for clear thinking that promotes national interest above evrything else.
The situation is akin to “Hastinapur” just before Mahabharat. I just hope this one does not end in as much bloodshed.

I don’t think we can do anything at this point of time. I feel that we have already lost the battle. There is lack of unity in Hindus plus we are more soft towards other community. Though I am hard secular person I need to say this because, no Muslims will ever talk for the benefits of Hindus. For example, Shabana Azmi and Zaved Akhtar will always be there for Muslims and will never tell them not to be fanatical. But when Muslims does wrong they will blame Hindus for provoking Mulims. They themselves includes the elemnets of discrimination among the people. They will never, and we Hindus will always play a bugle for equality, secularism, and humanity. Our grandparents or parents have never taught us to be shrewed, malign, betrayer and to look at the life way Mulims have been taught.(As per Islam everything is fair in name of religion and that is how they are taught to practise life). We have to unite and to encourage people to put faith in our religion, atleast we have “mantras” to protect ourselves and to defeat evils. practise them in everyday life and help poor Hindus with all necessary amenities to live life happily. We should start saving Hindu people. yes, ofcourse we should also keep loving people of all other community. Our religion teach us to look the person first as human than religion. Other community is definitly going to take advantage of this. But let them, we cannot help ourself. I know we are going to be in danger by applying this……….No way to go though.

I totally agree with the comments here.We are really too soft. Another Hindu problem is the only child phenomenon. I am an only child myself. I’ve never seen a Muslim only child.Yet inspite of being permited two children too many middle class urban Hindus have just one.I feel if we could just tackle female foeticide( a grave discrimination, and stops an entire Hindu family from coming into being) and decide to have at least two, things would not be so bad.

…..and also the muslims who choose india for paksitan did a grave mistake..

Mr parul should also give quotes from Muslim historians who recorded to substantiate, instead of regurgitate fond bedside tales told in our textbooks by marxists and the likes of Irfan habib.

Did Islam ‘liberate’ the lower castes?
Or did it take away ,regardless of which caste the kafirs belonged, large masses of kafir hindu men women and children and sold them in the streets of samarkand and Bagdad?
Obviously these parrots never read history chroniclers.
The chronicler of Mohamad Gazni, a court historian ,clearly showed how the sultan never distinguished the captive populace of hindustan on caste basis but spared their lives only if they became muslims.
And in either case they were taken as slaves.
does slavery sound like equality to you?
This was the reason why inspite of centuries of rule ,the lower castes remained hindus despite the lure of reward and pain of kafirdom.
Islamic rulers employed thier own foriegn persian speaking muslims in high offices and never allowed a native convert to an equal status.
They never intermarried with native muslim populace, but merely took the prettiest as concubines in their harams.
Also doesnt sound anything like equality?
Is it hard to believe, then see this happen on a daily basis in hyderabad, where this doling old gaot Arab shieks ‘marry’ the teenaged local muslim girls and dump them soon as the lust gets over.
Do u really believe the arab thinks u are equal to an arab?
have u ever gone to any arab land?
Ask how arabs treat others, even if they are muslims.

They held these converted muslims in great contempt,as Ajlaf, calling them low born, unfit for high office, unfit to conjugal relationship.
They treated and acted as would an imperialist Invader and minced no words about that.
And by the way,in this they just took lessons from the prophet himself who sanctified the ‘slave system’ -read the koran and u find ‘and those who belong to your right hand’
Have any idea who those ‘who belong to your right hand ‘ were?
Your hindu forefathers and natives whom they took captive for slavery.
Where is equality in all that?
On the contrary there are rules for division of such human beings along with booty, as to how much will go to the prophet and the rest.
Not a single line calling for abolition of slavery?
Islam knows no such concept as equality of man.
It knows only momins and kafirs
    the ashraf and the ajlaf
    The muslim and the zimmi.
    the master and the slave
Its a religion of Arab Imperialism.

    dears,

This population growth and illegal migration is global phenomenon. This happens as situation demands and mostly it is good for humanity. STability is achieved. Illegal migration helps to maintain stability for economy with cheap labour. if labors are treated inhumanly, that is local cultural problem.population growth needed in Europe and russia while it is a burden for Asian countries. Illegal immigration has helped kerala’s labour shortage. So please don’t break your heads thinking all these extremities. Muslims are not going to kill hindus.if it was like that, then Hindus would have been a minority community, since muslims ruled centuries here in INDIA.

From Invasion from the east by Sandhya Jain,
    August 18, 2012
The disproportionate increase in the Muslim population in eastern India, both on account of continuing migration and higher fertility vis-à-vis other communities, has triggered major demographic distortions. The growth has been particularly steep in Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar, and is nearing double digit figures in Manipur and Tripura (Census 2011 religious demography figures have not been revealed so far).

Censuses since 1951 show a sustained rise in Muslim population, in absolute and percentage terms, and a nation-wide corresponding decline in numbers of Hindu Faiths (Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists). By Census 1981, Muslim population growth stood at nearly 45 per cent higher rate than Hindus and Christians. Census 2001 put the decadal growth rate of Muslims at around 36%, while Hindu growth rate declined from 23 per cent to 20 per cent.

State-wise Religious Demography delineated in Census 2001 (which does not include illegal immigrants without ration / Voter Identity Cards) suggests that huge political changes loom ahead. In eastern India alone, the percentage of Muslim population in the States is, in descending order: Assam (30.92 per cent); West Bengal (25.25 per cent); Bihar (16.53per cent); Manipur (8.81 per cent); Tripura (7.95 per cent); Meghalaya (4.28 per cent); Arunachal Pradesh (1.88 per cent); Nagaland (1.76 per cent); Sikkim (1.42 per cent); Mizoram (1.14 per cent).

In Assam, districts with the highest Muslim populations include, in descending order: Dhubri (74.3 per cent); Barpeta (59.4 per cent); Hailakandi (57.6 per cent); Goalpara (53.7 per cent); Karimganj (52.3 per cent); Nagaon (51 per cent); Marigaon 47.6 per cent); Bongaigaon (38.5 per cent); Cachar (36.1 per cent); Darrang (35.5 per cent); Nalbari (22.1 per cent); Kokrajhar (20.4 per cent). Thus, five districts are already Muslim majority; four are on the way to becoming so.

Similarly, in West Bengal, districts with the highest Muslim population include, in descending order: Murshidabad (63.7 per cent); Maldah (49.7 per cent); Dinajpur (composite) (38.5 per cent); South 24-Parganas (33.2 per cent); Howrah (24.4 per cent); Kooch Behar (24.2 per cent); Kolkata (20.3 per cent).

Can this changing demography be explained as simply the natural movement of peoples in a geo-cultural biosphere which pre-exists current international boundaries?

The farcical Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, which made it virtually impossible to detect and deport nearly two million illegals, has not helped matters. Had the 1985 Assam Accord signed by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the All-Assam Student Union been sincerely implemented, the National Register of Citizens would have been updated and curtailed infiltration from Bangladesh. Concerned citizens now feel that Census 1951 – first Census of independent India – should be the basis for the National Register of Citizens.

The gravity of the problem can be seen from Election Commissioner HS Brahma’s admission in a newspaper article that the Election Commission of India has to tackle the problem of nearly 1.5 lakh ‘D-Voters’ (doubtful voters) while preparing the Assam electoral rolls. Currently this matter is sub-judice, but it is a bullet the courts will have to bite eventually as it poses a serious security threat to the nation. India can no longer fight shy of the need to deport illegal migrants. Else it must be prepared for recurrent bouts of bloodletting.

    Answer: 23287 Jul 21,2010
    (Fatwa: 1028/1028/M=1431)

The concept of family planning is against the teachings of Islam. As it is prohibited to kill one’s children out of the fear of economic failure, in the same way it is unlawful and haram to stop its birth on regular basis and adopt such a method that discontinues the birth ability. It is not right for a woman to use copper-T with the intention of birth control.

Somewhat related, BANGLADESHI INFILTRATION: THE REALITY CHECK, 27 June 2015 by Anish Gupta. Excerpts below:

The districts of West Bengal can be divided into two distinct groups: 1) the districts which have a higher population growth rate than the State average; and 2) the districts having a lower population growth rate than the State average. The 2001 census indicates that the population of ten districts — Uttar Dinajpur, Malda, Darjeeling, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, Dakshin Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Birbhum — has grown faster than the population growth of the State between 1991 and 2001.

Surprisingly, all these districts, except Birbhum and South 24 Parganas, share the border with Bangladesh. Moreover, the strategic locations of these two districts have closeness with Bangladesh.Birbhum is just around forty kilometres from the Bangladesh border. Murshidabad is located on the way from Birbhum to Bangladesh and it had the highest population growth among all the other districts during the given period.

The other noticeable thing about Murshidabad is that it is one of those districts in West Bengal which has the highest Muslim population. Another district which has a higher population growth than the State average, without having any border with Bangladesh, is South 24 Parganas. Although South 24 Parganas does not have any border with Bangladesh, it shares a direct sea route with Bangladesh. The other set of districts that have a lower population growth than the average State population growth are Hooghly, West Midnapore, East Midnapore, Howrah, Cooch Bihar, Purulia, Bardhaman, Bankura
    and Kolkata.

Interestingly, not one of these districts, except Cooch Bihar, shares the border with Bangladesh. It is one of those districts that already have a lower population density due to its geographical location. It is a highly flood-prone area. If we look back at the data acquired during the British rule and the first decade after Independence, no significant difference is found in the growth rates of the bordering and non-bordering districts of West Bengal. The growth rate in the 1960s was similar too.

An analysis shows that the population growth of West Bengal increased from 23.1% in 1981 to 24.7% in 1991. The rate of increase in the bordering districts was in the range of 0.3% to 10.5%, while the same for the non-bordering districts was in the range of 1.2% to 4.3%.This clearly indicates that the population growth in the bordering districts was higher than non-bordering districts. The 2001 and 2011 censuses showed the same data, where the population growth of bordering districts was falling with very less percentage points while the non-bordering districts was falling with comparatively higher percentage points.

An analysis of the districts based on religion shows that the Muslim population growth has been very high in the bordering districts. For instance, during the period 1981-2001, within the span of just twenty years, the Muslim population has increased by 128.9% in Darjeeling. Similarly, the Muslim population in Jalpaiguri, Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas has increased by 90.6%, 72.2% and 74% respectively, during the same period.

Statistically, if the population is increasing by 75% and 129% in just 20 years, either of these two has to be true: either Muslim women are, on an average, giving birth to ten to fourteen children or Bangladeshi Muslim infiltration is taking place. The first one, being very unlikely, clearly makes a case for Bangladeshi Muslim infiltration.

It does not matter if alterations in the religious demography are occurring in their normal course, but it becomes a concern if there are some deliberations and unpredictability to it. What should be feared is the probability of what happened to the people of J&K to recur in the case of people of West Bengal.
